OPEN// Arab FMs reach consensus on key regional issues ahead of Arab Summit

Middle East16-05-2025

BAGHDAD, May 16 (MENA) - Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty confirmed that the preparatory ministerial meeting of the Council of the Arab League, ahead of the Arab Summit to be hosted by Iraq on Saturday, witnessed consensus on the issues to be raised for discussion by Arab leaders.
In an exclusive statement to Al-Qahera News Channel Thursday night, he stated that agreement had been reached on a draft resolution concerning the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. Additionally, there was consensus on presenting a draft resolution in solidarity with Sudan.
He further noted that an agreement had been reached on a draft resolution concerning the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, reaffirming solidarity with Egypt and its historical water rights. Arab ministers also agreed to propose a draft resolution regarding Syria, calling for an inclusive political process. Furthermore, a draft resolution concerning Yemen was approved, aimed at supporting legitimacy and ensuring the safety of international navigation.
Regarding the ceasefire agreement between Houthis in Yemen and the United States, the top diplomat emphasized that the deal is expected to have a positive impact on maritime navigation in the Red Sea. He added that international companies had expressed optimism following its announcement.
As for the Gaza ceasefire, he explained that a comprehensive presentation was made concerning Egypt's efforts, in collaboration with Qatar, to secure a ceasefire in the war- ravaged enclave, stressing that halting the systematic killings in Gaza remains a priority for Egypt.
The minister underscored the urgent need to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza in light of the famine its people are being subjected to. He highlighted that Egypt's mediation efforts are continuing in cooperation with Qatar and the United States to reach a ceasefire and noted that once a deal on the end of hostilities is achieved, Cairo will host an international reconstruction conference for Gaza.
He also pointed out that the United States has demonstrated a greater understanding of the catastrophic situation in Gaza. However, he emphasized that the main obstacle remains the absence of political will on the part of Israel to reach a ceasefire agreement.
He stated, 'We are counting on the international community to intensify pressure on Israel to reach a ceasefire agreement and facilitate the release of detainees,' stressing that 'Egypt's mediation efforts have not ceased, but one party is blatantly violating international law.'
On another note, the minister emphasized that an inclusive political process in Syria would ensure protection for all its sects.
He also expressed concern over the escalating situation in Libya, noting that Egypt had previously warned of the fragile state of stability there. He affirmed that without the Libyan state's establishment of its full authority, sustainable stability remains unattainable in Libya.

OPEN// Foreign ministry stresses need to comply with Gaza border visit regulations

CAIRO, June 11 (MENA) - Egypt has welcomed the official and popular international and regional positions supporting Palestinian rights and rejecting the blockade, starvation tactics, and systematic and flagrant Israeli violations against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates affirmed that Egypt continues to work at all levels to end the aggression on Gaza and to bring an end to the humanitarian catastrophe impacting more than two million Palestinians. In this context and in light of recent requests and inquiries regarding visits by foreign delegations to the border areas adjacent to Gaza, especially Arish City and Rafah border crossing, Egypt stresses the necessity of obtaining prior approvals to conduct such visits, the ministry said. The only acceptable way for Egyptian authorities to consider these requests is by adhering to the regulatory framework and procedures established since the start of the war on Gaza, according to the statement. This includes submitting official requests to Egyptian embassies abroad, or through requests submitted by foreign embassies in Cairo or representatives of organizations to the foreign ministry, it said. Numerous visits have already been arranged for foreign delegations either representing governmental bodies or non-governmental human rights organizations, the ministry said. 'Egypt underlines the importance of adhering to these established regulations to ensure the safety of visiting delegations given the sensitive and volatile nature of the border area since the beginning of the Gaza crisis.' 'In this regard, Egypt reaffirms that no requests will be considered nor any invitations will be responded to if they fall outside the approved regulatory framework and established mechanisms,' the statement said. 'Egypt also underlines the importance that all foreign nationals must comply with Egyptian laws and entry regulations, including obtaining the necessary visas or pre-approved permits. 'Finally, Egypt reiterates its unwavering stance in support of the steadfastness of the Palestinian people on their land and its rejection of Israel's blatant violations of international law and international humanitarian law. 'It further stresses the importance of exerting pressure on Israel to lift the blockade on Gaza and to allow humanitarian access through all Israeli-controlled crossings with the Strip.' CAIRO, June 11 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli chaired a meeting of the economic ministerial group on Wednesday to review several important economic files. The meeting was attended by Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Hassan Abdallah along with the ministers of planning, finance, investment, and supply. The meeting highlighted the progress of the economic reform program as regards the fifth review of the program carried out by the government and CBE in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to Cabinet Spokesman Mohamed el Homsani. The meeting also tackled the prominent measures implemented under the IMF Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) program, the spokesman added. He noted that the inflation rate in June stands within the target range set by the IMF's quantitative performance criteria, and is expected to decline in 2026. However, there are still some bullish risks due to the implications of protectionist trade policies at the global level, as well as escalating regional tensions and conflicts, the spokesman pointed out.
