2025 Land Rover Defender Octa Black: South African price and specs
Following the reveal of the Range Rover Sport SV Black, Land Rover has now applied the same formula to the flagship Defender, the Octa. And it will strictly be available in limited numbers.
The Defender Octa Black features Narvik Black exterior paintwork, Satin Black Powder Coat finish for the front undershield and rear scuff plates, and gloss black exhaust outlets. Several underbody elements have also been finished in the latter hue. The limited edition is available with the choice of 20- and 22-inch wheels, replete with black centre caps.
The exterior theme is carried over to the cabin, where the facia is finished in black and the seats are upholstered in Ebony semi-aniline leather and textile material. Carbon-fibre trim is available as a cost option.
As a reminder, the Coventry automaker's most powerful Defender employs a 4.4l V8, sourced from BMW. The twin-turbocharged petrol unit produces a healthy 467kW and 750N.m of torque, delivered to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to Land Rover, these figures allow the pinnacle Defender to sprint to 100km/h from a standstill in four seconds, before topping out at 250km/h, or 210km/h when fitted with 20-inch wheels.

The Defender Octa Black is priced from R3 979 500, making it R315 900 more expensive than the standard Defender Octa, which we sampled in First Edition form in January 2025. Included in the pricing are a five-year/100 000km maintenance plan and a warranty spanning the same number of years and distance.

Land Rover Defender Trophy revives iconic Camel Trophy competition
Land Rover is reviving the iconic off-road competition that used to be known as the Camel Trophy and was held annually between 1980 and 2000. The new Defender Trophy — now without tobacco sponsorship — will have teams competing in a series of driving, navigational and physical challenges in harsh environments. The global 4x4 competition will have national qualifiers in 74 countries with a final to be held in October 2026 in an as-yet-unnamed venue in Africa. At the global final, competitors will work with wildlife agency Tusk to drive conservation efforts. The location for the final will be revealed in August 2026. The vehicle used in the competition is the recently announced Defender 110 D350 Trophy Edition which is on sale to the public as a more rugged version of Land Rover's best-selling model range. The Defender Trophy is painted in yellow similar to the iconic colour used in the original Camel Trophy (or optionally green) and rides on rugged all-terrain tyres with gloss black 20" alloy wheels. Trophy decals and badges set the special edition model apart along with a dark rear scuff plate, gloss black wheel arch guards and a black front undershield. Inside, the Defender Trophy Edition lays on tough luxury with ebony windsor leather seats and Trophy illuminated treadplates. The exposed cross car beam is finished in the same distinctive colour as the exterior and features laser-etched endcaps with Trophy branding. The six-cylinder 3.0 l turbo diesel engine produces 257kW of power and a lusty 700Nm of torque, with drive sent to all four wheels via permanent all-wheel drive and a Terrain Response system with modes for Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock Crawl. With the air suspension raised to its maximum height, the Defender has 291mm of ground clearance.

Tesla to sell Model Y cars in India, starting at $69,770
Tech billionaire Elon Musk's Tesla has priced its Model Y at about $69,770 (R1,246,393) in India, the highest among major markets, its website showed, as the electric carmaker geared up to open its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday. With delivery estimated to start from the third quarter, Tesla will drive on to India's busy roads, targeting a niche premium EV segment that accounts for only 4% of overall sales in the world's third-largest car market. It will compete mainly with German luxury giants such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz rather than domestic mass-market EV players such as Tata Motors and Mahindra. Tesla's Model Y rear-wheel drive will set back buyers ₹6m (R1,250,569), while its Model Y long-range rear-wheel drive costs ₹6.8m (R1,415,002). That compares with a starting price from $44,990 (R803,224) in the US, ¥263,500 (R655,219) in China, and €45,970 (R958,727) in Germany. Grappling with excess capacity in global factories and declining sales, Tesla has adopted a strategy of selling imported vehicles in India, despite duties and levies running into about 70%. On Tuesday, police guarded Tesla's first showroom in India as media crowded outside the office complex where it is located and the chief minister of the western state of Maharashtra, home to the Indian commercial capital, arrived for the launch. Inside the showroom clad in Tesla's signature minimalist neutral tones, the Model Y was draped under black and grey covers, partially visible through the glass. Access was tightly regulated with no sign of fans or onlookers nearby. Tesla's website showed the Model Y available for registration in Mumbai at an on-road price of ₹6.1m (R1,268,305), with a booking deposit of ₹22,220 (R4,619). The firm's Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability is on offer at an additional cost of ₹600,000 (R124,751), with future updates promised to enable operation with minimal driver intervention. While the features require active driver supervision and are not fully autonomous, Tesla said the system will evolve through over-the-air software updates.

Britain offers discounts on EVs to boost demand
The British government will offer discounts worth up to £3,750 (R90,058) to buyers of electric cars priced at £37,000 (R888,574) or below, it said on Monday, under a new scheme that aims to better align consumer demand with net zero emissions targets. The government will spend £650m (R15,610,101) on the discount scheme, which will be available from Wednesday to consumers after carmakers sign up for the scheme. As part of a wider goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, Britain wants to phase out sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. However, demand for electric cars has stalled, with consumers citing high upfront costs as the main barrier. "This EV grant will not only allow people to keep more of their hard-earned money, it'll help our automotive sector seize one of the biggest opportunities of the 21st century," transport secretary Heidi Alexander said. The scheme comes after calls from the automotive industry for EV incentive as carmakers effectively need to sell more EVs every year to meet emissions targets or pay fines. Britain scrapped a previous incentive scheme for electric vehicle purchases in 2022 as the then-Conservative government shifted focus to spending on expanding the public charging network. A number of European countries including Norway, which has the highest percentage of electric cars in Europe, and France and Germany offer incentives for EV buyers, including subsidies and exemption from taxes. The British government in April relaxed some EV sales targets for carmakers as the industry coped with new tariffs on sales to the US, its second largest market after the EU. Ginny Buckley, CEO of advice website said nearly one in two electric models will be cheaper thanks to the "long overdue" incentives. The government said the £650m funding for the Electric Car Grant will be available until 2028/29. By contrast, carmakers had spent around £6.5bn (R156,044,980,000) on electric car discounts since the government's EV sales targets were introduced at the start of 2024, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders CEO Mike Hawes told reporters last month. Hawes welcomed the new grant on Monday, saying it was a "clear signal" this was the time for drivers to switch to an electric car.
