Motorist may be fined P150k for using EDSA busway 309 times — MMDA
In Vonne Aquino's Wednesday report on 'Saksi,' MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said the motorist kept using the EDSA busway at night, where it is dark and no traffic enforcers were deployed from August 2024 to last Friday.
'Irereklamo na po namin siya sa LTO for suspension ng license [at] kung ano pa pwedeng penalty ipataw sa kanya,' Artes said.
(We will file a complaint before the LTO (Land Transportation Office) for the suspension of his license and other penalties.)
The MMDA showed CCTV footage of the motorist to underscore the importance of the No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP) to discipline motorists even without the presence of traffic enforcers.
The MMDA is also looking into endorsing to the Metro Manila Council the move to oblige NCAP violators engage in community services as a penalty.
'Sinsabi po kasi na negosyo ang NCAP. Hindi po. Ito po ay para disiplinahin ang tao at bantayan ang kalsada. Tamang tama po may mga programa kami gaya ng paglilinis ng estero at kanal para malabanan ang pagbaha, maalis ng mga basura,' Artes said.
(Some say NCAP is a business. It's not true. The policy is implemented to discipline motorists and monitor the road. We have programs like cleaning drive of drainages and canals to combat flood and dispose garbage.)

BI: 3 trafficking victims rescued at NAIA; 'overstaying' Korean to be deported
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) rescued three Filipino human trafficking victims supposedly bound for Spain and is currently processing the deportation of an overstaying South Korean. According to the bureau, the victims — two males and one female, who are in their late 30s and 40s — allegedly attempted to board an Emirates airline flight to Spain at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) when they were stopped by immigration personnel. The victims initially said they were working in a local tech company and were headed to Spain to attend a conference. However, immigration officers doubted their statement and referred them for secondary inspection. They then admitted that they are travelling to Spain for work and that they were recruited and that they paid over P300,000 to a contact they met on social media. "The said recruiter promised to provide them with all the necessary documentary requirements, and assistance to depart the country illegally," according to the statement posted by the bureau. Immigration Commissioner Joel Viado said they are investigating if any immigration personnel were involved in the incident. 'In line with the BI's one strike policy, we will not hesitate to take necessary legal action against those involved in human trafficking,' Viado said. The victims were turned over to the inter-agency council against trafficking for investigation and filing of cases against their recruiters. Overstaying foreigner nabbed Meanwhile, immigration authorities apprehended a South Korean man in Tubigon, Bohol over alleged overstaying. Suspect Park Yeungtae, 56, was arrested in his residence in Barangay Pooc Oriental in July 23 after allegedly failing to update his immigration status since 2016. His continued presence in the country was deemed in violation of the Philippine Immigration Act, according to the BI. 'Our officers continue to monitor and act on cases of foreign nationals who choose to overstay and disregard our immigration policies,' said Viado. 'The Bureau maintains zero tolerance for such violations. The law applies to everyone — no exceptions,' he added. Following his arrest, the foreigner was transported via ferry to Cebu City and temporarily held at the Mabolo Police Station. He is scheduled for transfer to the BI's facility in Manila. He will also undergo deportation proceedings and included in the BI's blacklist to prevent future re-entry into the country. 'The Philippines welcomes foreigners who respect our laws. But if you break them, we will take the necessary legal action,' said Viado. 'Overstaying is not a minor offense. Cristy Fermin, co-accused post bail for cyber libel case
Cristy Fermin has posted bail after a warrant of arrest was issued against her and two others over Bea Alonzo's cyber libel complaint. According to a report on "Balitanghali" on Friday, Fermin and Wendell Alvarez have been granted bail, while Rommel Villamor is still arranging to post bail at the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 93. Fermin said that the warrant has been out since July 21, but they only received it on July 30. She added that she would have voluntarily surrendered had there been no delay with the documents. Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, the legal counsel of Fermin and her co-accused, told GMA News Online that, "We are now preparing for her defense." The bail was set at P48,000 each for Fermin, Villamor, and Alvarez, with the charges stemming from alleged defamatory statements made against Alonzo. According to an earlier by Aubrey Carampel, Alonzo's lawyer Atty. Joey Garcia said that the development of the case proves the actress's right to file a complaint. 'We have always stood firm in the merits of our client's case. This development vindicates her position and affirms her right to seek redress,' Garcia said in a statement. "This is not only an initial legal victory for Ms. Alonzo but a statement of principle, free speech does not mean freedom to defame. The law draws a clear line and that line has been crossed," he added. In May 2024, Alonzo filed a cyber libel complaint against Fermin, Ogie Diaz, and their co-hosts on their respective programs. Remains reclaimed by Manila funeral parlor after kin failed to pay in full
There was no peace for the dead in a Manila funeral parlor recently ordered closed for allegedly leaving bodies in a decomposing state. According to Mark Salazar's report on '24 Oras' on Thursday, one of the remains, identified to be that of Rennan Pornobi, a murder victim in Ermita last April, was earlier released to the family following a partial payment. The family had already held a wake for Rennan, but the Body and Light Funeral Service reclaimed Rennan's remains as his family could not fully pay the charges. 'Yung anak pumunta, sabi sa akin kulang pa po ng P30,000. Nung babayaran nila mayroon pa daw utang…ang sabi parang P30,000 plus pa daw kasi parang aabutin ng P85,000,' said Nestor Malabag, chairperson of Barangay 659 in Ermita. (His child went to us and said that they still have P30,000 left to pay. When they were about to pay, they were told that they still owed the funeral parlor P30,000 because the total cost was around P85,000). 'Ibinalik daw ang patay kasi nabasag yung salamin…Hindi na na-release,' he added. (The body was returned because the glass of the casket was broken…It was never released to them again.) Rennan's body was finally buried at the Manila North Cemetery earlier in the day. Another body, identified as Leah Tongol, also a murder victim in Malate last April, never got out of the funeral parlor as her family could not settle the P150,000 fees. Leah's body was found by the authorities decomposing in the formalin solution. Her body was cremated on the same day and turned over to the family, the report said. Meanwhile, authorities said they would try to identify the eight other bodies seized from the funeral parlor and would wait for their families to claim them for a week. If not, they will be buried without identification, the report said. The report said the funeral parlor did not have a sanitary permit and an office permit. Meanwhile, a family went to the cemetery's office looking for the body of their father, whom they had earlier brought to Body and Light. They were surprised to hear the news that the funeral parlor was shut down on Wednesday. However, they lamented that the establishment was still asking them to pay their dues until early Thursday, the report said. 'They were charging us P180,000 in order to release the body. They were in contact with us all the way from yesterday morning til today Thursday morning trying to charge us P180,000. We're telling them we cannot afford that amount,' a family member said. The body of their father was not among those that were seized from Wednesday's operation. But the Body and Light's owner coordinated with the Manila North Cemetery, saying that it would release the remains. To the family's surprise, the body is already in an advanced state of decomposition, which was contrary to the claims of the funeral parlor that it was already embalmed. 'Decomposed siya di gaya ng claim nila na inembalsamo nang maayos. I can only assume kung siya nga po yun,' the kin said.
