Remains reclaimed by Manila funeral parlor after kin failed to pay in full
According to Mark Salazar's report on '24 Oras' on Thursday, one of the remains, identified to be that of Rennan Pornobi, a murder victim in Ermita last April, was earlier released to the family following a partial payment.
The family had already held a wake for Rennan, but the Body and Light Funeral Service reclaimed Rennan's remains as his family could not fully pay the charges.
'Yung anak pumunta, sabi sa akin kulang pa po ng P30,000. Nung babayaran nila mayroon pa daw utang…ang sabi parang P30,000 plus pa daw kasi parang aabutin ng P85,000,' said Nestor Malabag, chairperson of Barangay 659 in Ermita.
(His child went to us and said that they still have P30,000 left to pay. When they were about to pay, they were told that they still owed the funeral parlor P30,000 because the total cost was around P85,000).
'Ibinalik daw ang patay kasi nabasag yung salamin…Hindi na na-release,' he added.
(The body was returned because the glass of the casket was broken…It was never released to them again.)
Rennan's body was finally buried at the Manila North Cemetery earlier in the day.
Another body, identified as Leah Tongol, also a murder victim in Malate last April, never got out of the funeral parlor as her family could not settle the P150,000 fees.
Leah's body was found by the authorities decomposing in the formalin solution. Her body was cremated on the same day and turned over to the family, the report said.
Meanwhile, authorities said they would try to identify the eight other bodies seized from the funeral parlor and would wait for their families to claim them for a week. If not, they will be buried without identification, the report said.
'Kung meron kayong labi na naiwan sa Body and Light makipag-ugnayan lang po dito sa opisina ng Manila North Cemetery para naman ang mahal nyo sa buhay ay mabigyan natin nang maayos na pagbuburulan at paglilibingan,' said the cemetery director Daniel Tan.
(If the body of your loved one is still at Body and Light, please coordinate directly with the Manila North Cemetery office. This way, we can ensure your loved one receives a proper wake and burial.)
The Manila Sanitary Department on Wednesday ordered the closure of Body and Light after authorities found piles of decomposing cadavers inside its premises.
The report said the funeral parlor did not have a sanitary permit and an office permit.
Meanwhile, a family went to the cemetery's office looking for the body of their father, whom they had earlier brought to Body and Light.
They were surprised to hear the news that the funeral parlor was shut down on Wednesday. However, they lamented that the establishment was still asking them to pay their dues until early Thursday, the report said.
'They were charging us P180,000 in order to release the body. They were in contact with us all the way from yesterday morning til today Thursday morning trying to charge us P180,000. We're telling them we cannot afford that amount,' a family member said.
The body of their father was not among those that were seized from Wednesday's operation. But the Body and Light's owner coordinated with the Manila North Cemetery, saying that it would release the remains.
To the family's surprise, the body is already in an advanced state of decomposition, which was contrary to the claims of the funeral parlor that it was already embalmed.
'Decomposed siya di gaya ng claim nila na inembalsamo nang maayos. I can only assume kung siya nga po yun,' the kin said.
(It was already decomposed contrary to the claim that it was already embalmed. I can only assume it was him.)
The family said that they will discuss whether they will pursue filing charges against the funeral parlor.

Honeylet says she's suspended from visiting Duterte in ICC detention
According to Marisol Abdurahman's report on "24 Oras," Avanceña said she was told about her suspension during her last visit to Duterte. Former President Rodrigo Duterte's common-law partner, Honeylet Avanceña, said her visitation rights to the detained former leader at the International Criminal Court detention facility had been suspended. According to Marisol Abdurahman's report on "24 Oras," Avanceña said she was told about her suspension during her last visit to Duterte. "'Nung time na yun, five minutes bago matapos, sinabihan na lang ako na isusupend daw ako. Ang sabi pa nga ni PRD doon sa lalaki na 'you cannot do that' kasi nga he's expecting me. This is my time right now. This is my schedule to visit him. Tapos the following day, wala na akong visit,' Avanceña said. (During that time, just five minutes before my visit ended, I was told that I was going to be suspended. Duterte even told the man, 'You cannot do that,' because he was expecting me. It was my scheduled time to visit him. Then the next day, I was no longer allowed to visit.) Avanceña noted that her suspension was related to a call with Duterte on July 19, when she was supposed to have commented on the case. She said she didn't know anything about the issue. She blamed Duterte's ICC-listed defense counsel Nicholas Kaufman. "I have nothing against you, pero please do not deprive us of asking other people or asking legal opinions from other lawyers also. We acknowledge you as his lawyer," Avanceña said. "You know, I know you are protecting your real practice. I don't know if you're trying to prove something [but] we are concerned about the life of this man,' she added. When asked about the legal basis of Avanceña's suspension of visitation rights, Kaufman refused to comment on the matter. 'For judicial reasons and out of respect for family privacy, I am not going to comment on the veracity of Honeylet Avanceña's allegations concerning her presence not being desired at the ICC detention centre,' Kaufman said. 'Honeylet Avanceña, so it would appear, is emotionally distressed for reasons on which, as I mentioned previously, I cannot elaborate. As a consequence, she is making all sorts of wild allegations which are being stoked by others,' he added. Kaufman further said, 'The simple fact of the matter is that the Vice President, as a lawyer herself, is fully qualified to judge the quality of my engagement with and work for the former president.' GMA Integrated News has reached out to Vice President Sara Duterte for comment. Kaufman also said visiting rights were not determined by the counsel but by the detention center authorities, with the intervention of the judges when necessary. 'The former President's health is being adequately managed and overseen by all those currently in daily contact with him,' Kaufman said. –Mariel Celine Serquiña/NB, GMA Integrated News

2 kidnap victims rescued, 4 Chinese nabbed in Parañaque ops
Two kidnapping victims were rescued while four Chinese nationals who allegedly abducted them were arrested in an operation in Parañaque City on Saturday, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday. 'Apat na Chinese nationals ang ating naaresto na naman ng Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) na sangkot sa kasong kidnapping na naganap sa isang kilalang resort sa Paranaque City,' PNP chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said in a press briefing. The kidnapping happened after a 30-year-old Chinese national asked for assistance from the suspects for the foreign currency exchange and transfer of P150,000 to China. The victim initially released P100,000. Torre said the suspects convinced the victim to go with them to a resort casino to finalize the transaction but it led to a kidnapping. The suspects were allegedly forcing the victim to transfer an amount of 50,000 USDT from his cryptocurrency wallet. According to Torre, the victim asked the suspects for his phone to contact his family. The victim secretly reached out to another Chinese national who sought help from the local police through a 911 call. Aside from the 30-year-old Chinese national, the police also rescued another female victim kidnapped by the suspects. —AOL, GMA Integrated News

8 bodies left at Manila funeral parlor identified
Authorities have identified the eight remaining bodies retrieved from a funeral parlor in Manila, including one belonging to a foreigner. According to Mark Salazar's report on '24 Oras' on Friday, seven of them were former street dwellers. One of the bodies was identified as 'Ramil,' who is believed to be in his 50s and was found dead along Ermita Avenue last May 11. Meanwhile, 'Tata' was said to have been shot dead last June 21. Another body was identified as that of a girl aged 13 to 15 years old who was found floating on the waters of South Harbor last July 10. Further, the three other bodies belonged to senior citizens who had their last breath while on the streets. Of the eight bodies, one of them belonged to a Japanese citizen identified as Akihito Nishizuka - a 49-year-old male who was found dead inside a condominium unit in Malate in August 2024. However, none of his family members claimed his body for a year. The details on the identities of the remains were based on the spot report released by the Manila Police District's Homicide Division. Meanwhile, the Manila North Cemetery will give one week for the families to claim the bodies before they bury them, the report said. There were three families who went to the cemetery to check if their deceased loved ones were among the seized bodies from Body and Light Funeral Services. According to the report, these families have yet to claim the bodies due to remaining payments to the funeral parlor. 'Pinapunta ko na po sa Manila City Hall, sabi ko doon na lang mag-blotter. Ni-refer ko na sa City Legal yung mga problema,' said Manila North Cemetery director Daniel Tan. (I told them to go to the Manila City Hall for a blotter report. I referred them to the city's legal office about their problem.) GMA Integrated News reached out to Body and Light Funeral Services for a comment. For its part, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said that it offers wake and burial assistance to those who are in need. 'Ang pinapa-submit natin yung funeral contract, of course yung death certificate, valid ID, mayroon ding certification from the hospital, and ini-interview kasi 'yan ng ating mga social workers,' said DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao. (They only have to submit to us the funeral contract, of course, the death certificate, valid ID, and certification from the hospital, because our social workers will still have to conduct an interview first.) For street dwellers, a barangay certificate would suffice for them to avail of DSWD's burial assistance.
