8 bodies left at Manila funeral parlor identified
According to Mark Salazar's report on '24 Oras' on Friday, seven of them were former street dwellers.
One of the bodies was identified as 'Ramil,' who is believed to be in his 50s and was found dead along Ermita Avenue last May 11. Meanwhile, 'Tata' was said to have been shot dead last June 21.
Another body was identified as that of a girl aged 13 to 15 years old who was found floating on the waters of South Harbor last July 10.
Further, the three other bodies belonged to senior citizens who had their last breath while on the streets.
Of the eight bodies, one of them belonged to a Japanese citizen identified as Akihito Nishizuka - a 49-year-old male who was found dead inside a condominium unit in Malate in August 2024. However, none of his family members claimed his body for a year.
The details on the identities of the remains were based on the spot report released by the Manila Police District's Homicide Division.
Meanwhile, the Manila North Cemetery will give one week for the families to claim the bodies before they bury them, the report said.
There were three families who went to the cemetery to check if their deceased loved ones were among the seized bodies from Body and Light Funeral Services. According to the report, these families have yet to claim the bodies due to remaining payments to the funeral parlor.
'Pinapunta ko na po sa Manila City Hall, sabi ko doon na lang mag-blotter. Ni-refer ko na sa City Legal yung mga problema,' said Manila North Cemetery director Daniel Tan.
(I told them to go to the Manila City Hall for a blotter report. I referred them to the city's legal office about their problem.)
GMA Integrated News reached out to Body and Light Funeral Services for a comment.
For its part, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said that it offers wake and burial assistance to those who are in need.
'Ang pinapa-submit natin yung funeral contract, of course yung death certificate, valid ID, mayroon ding certification from the hospital, and ini-interview kasi 'yan ng ating mga social workers,' said DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao.
(They only have to submit to us the funeral contract, of course, the death certificate, valid ID, and certification from the hospital, because our social workers will still have to conduct an interview first.)
For street dwellers, a barangay certificate would suffice for them to avail of DSWD's burial assistance.

Torre: Proceeds from charity boxing match donated to Red Cross, DSWD
A referee raises the hand of Philippine National Police chief Police General Nicolas Torre III after declaring him the winner in the 'Boxing for a Cause: Laban Para sa Nasalanta' charity boxing event at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, July 27, 2025. His opponent, acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian 'Baste' Duterte was a no-show. JUSTIN KENNETH CARANDANG/GMA Integrated News A portion of the proceeds of the July 28 charity boxing match in Manila's Rizal Memorial Coliseum were donated to the Philippine Red Cross and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Philippine National Police chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said Monday. 'Nakapag-bigay na po tayo ng P5 million sa Philippine Red Cross,' Torre said. 'Ang natitira pang mga pera, ang DSWD ay iko-convert na lang sa bigas. So bibili kami ng limang tonelada, that would be I think 1,000 sacks ng bigas dahil para mas mabilis daw ang accounting process,' he added. (We were able to give P5 million to the Philippine Red to the remaining money, the DSWD will convert this to rice. So we will buy give tons, that would be I think is equivalent to 1,000 sacks so the accounting procss could be faster.) Torre said that right after the boxing event, donations were also distributed to 1,000 people in Tondo, Manila. The remaining proceeds will be provided to relief operations in other areas, he added. According to Torre, more than P16 million were raised during the charity boxing event, which was organized to provide aid to the victims of recent tropical cyclones Crising, Dante, Emong, and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat. Torre was declared as the winner of the match against acting Davao City mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte with the latter not showing up in the event. Torre declared winner as Baste Duterte a no-show in charity event | GMA News Online The match was planned after Duterte in a vlog posted July 20 mentioned Torre and said: 'Kasi matapang ka lang naman you have the position. But then you're a coward.' (You're brave because you have the position but if we fight, I know I can handle you. But then you're a coward.) Torre responded to this by saying it could be in the form of a charity boxing match and the proceeds would be for those affected by the recent storms. The top cop scheduled the match on July 27. Duterte said he was not available on the said date as it was a 'family day,' but said he would be available on another day. To recall, Torre led the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte — the acting mayor's father — in March, as Philippine authorities assisted Interpol in serving a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity in connection with his drug war.

8 bodies left at Manila funeral parlor identified
Authorities have identified the eight remaining bodies retrieved from a funeral parlor in Manila, including one belonging to a foreigner. According to Mark Salazar's report on '24 Oras' on Friday, seven of them were former street dwellers. Remains reclaimed by Manila funeral parlor after kin failed to pay in full
There was no peace for the dead in a Manila funeral parlor recently ordered closed for allegedly leaving bodies in a decomposing state. According to Mark Salazar's report on '24 Oras' on Thursday, one of the remains, identified to be that of Rennan Pornobi, a murder victim in Ermita last April, was earlier released to the family following a partial payment. The family had already held a wake for Rennan, but the Body and Light Funeral Service reclaimed Rennan's remains as his family could not fully pay the charges. 'Yung anak pumunta, sabi sa akin kulang pa po ng P30,000. Nung babayaran nila mayroon pa daw utang…ang sabi parang P30,000 plus pa daw kasi parang aabutin ng P85,000,' said Nestor Malabag, chairperson of Barangay 659 in Ermita. (His child went to us and said that they still have P30,000 left to pay. When they were about to pay, they were told that they still owed the funeral parlor P30,000 because the total cost was around P85,000). 'Ibinalik daw ang patay kasi nabasag yung salamin…Hindi na na-release,' he added. (The body was returned because the glass of the casket was broken…It was never released to them again.) Rennan's body was finally buried at the Manila North Cemetery earlier in the day. Another body, identified as Leah Tongol, also a murder victim in Malate last April, never got out of the funeral parlor as her family could not settle the P150,000 fees. Leah's body was found by the authorities decomposing in the formalin solution. Her body was cremated on the same day and turned over to the family, the report said. Meanwhile, authorities said they would try to identify the eight other bodies seized from the funeral parlor and would wait for their families to claim them for a week. If not, they will be buried without identification, the report said. 'Kung meron kayong labi na naiwan sa Body and Light makipag-ugnayan lang po dito sa opisina ng Manila North Cemetery para naman ang mahal nyo sa buhay ay mabigyan natin nang maayos na pagbuburulan at paglilibingan,' said the cemetery director Daniel Tan. (If the body of your loved one is still at Body and Light, please coordinate directly with the Manila North Cemetery office. This way, we can ensure your loved one receives a proper wake and burial.) The Manila Sanitary Department on Wednesday ordered the closure of Body and Light after authorities found piles of decomposing cadavers inside its premises. The report said the funeral parlor did not have a sanitary permit and an office permit. Meanwhile, a family went to the cemetery's office looking for the body of their father, whom they had earlier brought to Body and Light. They were surprised to hear the news that the funeral parlor was shut down on Wednesday. However, they lamented that the establishment was still asking them to pay their dues until early Thursday, the report said. 'They were charging us P180,000 in order to release the body. They were in contact with us all the way from yesterday morning til today Thursday morning trying to charge us P180,000. We're telling them we cannot afford that amount,' a family member said. The body of their father was not among those that were seized from Wednesday's operation. But the Body and Light's owner coordinated with the Manila North Cemetery, saying that it would release the remains. To the family's surprise, the body is already in an advanced state of decomposition, which was contrary to the claims of the funeral parlor that it was already embalmed. 'Decomposed siya di gaya ng claim nila na inembalsamo nang maayos. I can only assume kung siya nga po yun,' the kin said. (It was already decomposed contrary to the claim that it was already embalmed. I can only assume it was him.) The family said that they will discuss whether they will pursue filing charges against the funeral parlor. GMA Integrated News is trying to reach out to Body and Light for a comment.
