Google DeepMind CEO says Meta's AI talent war is rational because they are behind
Zuckerberg himself is said to have been personally involved in the talent hunt, reportedly luring some of the biggest names in AI research with stratospheric offers, packages as high as $200 million a year have been whispered about in industry circles. The results are already showing: researchers from OpenAI, Google and even Apple have resigned to join Meta, raising eyebrows across the tech world.Hassabis, however, believes the deeper motivation for top scientists goes beyond pay cheques. 'There's a strategy that Meta is taking right now,' he told Bloomberg. 'I think the people that are real believers in the mission of AGI and what it can do, and understand the consequences, both good and bad, are mostly doing it to be at the frontier, so they can help influence how that plays out and steward the technology safely into the world.'Meta, he noted, 'right now are not at the frontier. Maybe they'll manage to get back there. And it's probably rational, what they're doing from their perspective, because they're behind and they need to do something. But I think there are more important things than just money. Of course, one has to pay people market rates, and those continue to go up.'The DeepMind CEO also reflected on how dramatically the AI field has changed in just over a decade. 'We couldn't raise any money. I didn't pay myself for a couple of years,' he said of DeepMind's early years.'Now,' he added with a touch of incredulity, 'interns are being paid what we raised as our entire first seed round.' The comment underlines just how much the AI gold rush has distorted valuations and salaries as tech firms race to be first to artificial general intelligence (AGI).For Hassabis, the current frenzy of hiring and spending misses a fundamental point: the real prize lies in being at the cutting edge of research, not in cashing in. DeepMind, acquired by Google in 2014, has built a reputation for scientific breakthroughs, from mastering Go to solving protein structures, and Hassabis clearly sees that mission as more compelling than stock options alone.advertisementMeta, meanwhile, is betting that an infusion of top-tier researchers will allow it to catch up in the generative AI race, and perhaps leapfrog rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic and, indeed, DeepMind.Whether Zuckerberg's megabucks approach works remains to be seen. But for now, at least one leading voice in AI believes there's more to the future of the field than a blank cheque.- EndsMust Watch

Mark Zuckerberg's secret Kauai empire: 2,300 acres, tunnels, treehouses — and a doomsday bunker
Mark Zuckerberg Hawaii estate : Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had arrived in Hawaii with a vision and a checkbook in 2014; what began as a $100 million land deal for 700 acres on Kauai's scenic north shore has since grown into a sprawling private empire of more than 2,300 acres, as per a report. A decade later, the Meta CEO's secluded estate, known as Koʻolau Ranch , stretches from mountaintop to ocean and rivals the island's annual public infrastructure budget in value, as per a LuxuryLaunches report. Inside Koʻolau Ranch: Tunnels, Treehouses, and a Doomsday Bunker Drone images, permits, and local reporting reveal a compound so high-tech and heavily fortified, according to the report. Hidden beneath the lush forest canopy are two giant mansions connected by underground tunnels, multiple guesthouses, a gym, and even futuristic treehouses suspended in the jungle, according to LuxuryLaunches report. At its heart lies a 5,000-square-foot underground bunker, complete with blast-resistant doors, a secret escape hatch, and panic rooms, as per the report. Security cameras, motion sensors, and keypad-locked gates encircle the estate, and all workers are bound by strict non-disclosure agreements, reported LuxuryLaunches. Zuckerberg filed a series of lawsuits to identify the descendants of 14 tiny Kuleana land parcels within his estate, the land granted to Native Hawaiian commoners in the 1800s, as per LuxuryLaunches report. These parcels, though often less than an acre, are rich with cultural and ancestral significance. The lawsuits, filed through a legal process called 'quiet title,' were seen by many as a form of legal bullying, according to LuxuryLaunches report. Families claimed they had no idea they were landowners until a summons arrived, and few had the resources to fight back, as per the LuxuryLaunches report. A petition to stop Zuckerberg's acquisitions gained the spotlight, and under growing public pressure, Zuckerberg dropped the lawsuits in 2017 and said he wanted to make things right, according to the report. But for many residents, the damage was already done. Hawaii Passes New Law in Response to Land Grabs The controversy led to change. Hawaii lawmakers passed a bill requiring landowners like Zuckerberg to first attempt mediation before heading to court, as per LuxuryLaunches. The law also places the cost of mediation on the plaintiff, according to the report. A $65 Million Addition Quietly Finalized However, critics argued that legislation alone cannot stop the tide of wealth reshaping the island's cultural and physical landscape, as reported by LuxuryLaunches. The most recent addition to Zuckerberg's landholdings, a 1,000-acre parcel valued at around $65 million, was finalized quietly, according to the report. His team also filed permits to build three more multi-million-dollar buildings on the estate, with large dormitory-like structures with 16 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms, complete with a 1,300-square-foot open-air lanai, as reported by LuxuryLaunches. The estimated construction cost exceeds $30 million, almost equal to the island of Kauai's yearly public infrastructure budget, as per the report. FAQs How much land does Zuckerberg now own in Kauai? Over 2,300 acres, that's about three times the size of New York's Central Park. How much did Zuckerberg pay for all this land? His most recent purchase alone was valued at $65 million. Altogether, the estate is worth hundreds of millions.

Google may face ‘major' lawsuit as users claim facing more issues with company's smart home devices
Representative Image Google is set to face a class action lawsuit as a growing number of its smart home device users have reported experiencing more issues. These issues include misheard commands, delayed responses, and ignored instructions. US law firm Kaplan Gore LLP has launched an investigation into a potential class action lawsuit against the company. The law firm is exploring legal action due to Google's alleged failure to "remedy increasing problems with its Google Home 'smart home' service." The firm notes that many users have reported functionality issues with devices that previously worked well and had stable internet connections. Kaplan Gore also claims that Google is allowing these problems with Google Home to "increase in scale and frequency nationwide" and is "not providing the service it promised users." This comes despite Google's assurances that improvements are imminent. How Google Home issues are affecting users and what the company said The problems started last week when Google acknowledged growing user frustration with several Google Home speakers and announced plans for "major improvements." Less than a week later, reports suggest that the problems may be escalating. The issues seem to be linked to Google Assistant, which is set to be replaced by Gemini AI. In recent weeks, the current voice assistant has already seen a reduction in available features ahead of the transition. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hi Tabbola Undo In a recent post shared on X, Aniah Kattukaran, the Chief Product Officer for Google Home Nest , admitted to the problems and wrote: 'Hey everyone, I want to acknowledge the recent feedback about Google Assistant reliability on our home devices. I sincerely apologise for what you're experiencing and feeling! We hear you loud and clear and are committed to getting this right -- and making sure we have a long term solution that provides better reliability and capability. We have been actively working on major improvements for sometime and will have more to share in the fall.' Even after acknowledging the issues, user dissatisfaction remains high. Android Police highlighted a Reddit thread in the Google Home subreddit where several users reported that voice controls for smart lights had stopped working entirely. While device subreddits typically feature product questions or troubleshooting help, the Google Home subreddit is currently filled with complaints about broken voice controls. The situation prompted an official Google moderator to respond twice within the same thread. 'We're aware of an issue with using voice commands to control some lights. We'll share an update as soon as possible, thanks for your patience,' the moderator stated. In a follow-up post, the moderator mentioned a fix was being rolled out, though they added that "some users might still be experiencing issues." One user complained: "You're not adding how do you manage to sc**w up the old ones that worked?" Sony WF-C710N Review: Solid Sound and Long Battery AI Masterclass for Students.
