'A hazardous job predicting what will happen with Spurs'

Over on our live page our chief football writer Phil McNulty has been taking your questions.
Tom asked: Phil, as a Spurs fan I go into the window with the same resigned anxiety as ever, that the club will low-ball offers until the final week of the window in the hope of getting a deal. Given that strategy and the sacking of Ange Postecoglou, I'd have not been surprised if people had tried to warn Thomas Frank off the Spurs job. With all that in mind, do you think the hierarchy changes in the boardroom and other high levels will change anything at the club, or are we doomed to "rebuild" every two years as has been the way since Pochettino was unceremoniously booted?

Phil McNulty: Hello, Tom. There does appear to be change behind the scenes, and Thomas Frank will have surely sought the necessary assurances before leaving Brentford.
There is already talk of a move for Bryan Mbeumo, Frank's former player at Brentford, while Mathys Tel has been signed and sealed.
Will things really change at Spurs? Who knows?
It is a hazardous job predicting what will happen with Spurs. After all, chairman Daniel Levy sacked all the managers who failed to win trophies then also sacked Ange Postecoglou, the one who did.
I do actually think there is the basis of really good squad for Frank to work with, augmented by a couple of quality additions.

Daniel Levy: Sacking Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham head coach 'emotionally difficult'

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has described the decision to sack Ange Postecoglou as 'emotionally difficult.' Postecoglou became Spurs' head coach in June 2023 and he led them to a fifth-placed finish during his first season. Tottenham suffered from a crippling injury crisis during his second year in charge which negatively impacted their domestic form. Spurs lost 22 games under Postecoglou and finished 17th but they won their first piece of silverware since 2008 with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final. Advertisement Postecoglou was sacked by Spurs 16 days after lifting that trophy in Bilbao and on the second anniversary of his appointment. Thomas Frank was announced as the new head coach last week. In a rare interview, conducted alongside new chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, published on the club's YouTube channel, Levy explained why Postecoglou left. 'I'm very grateful to Ange,' Levy said. 'I don't regret appointing Ange. In his first season we finished fifth and in the second season we were over the moon to win a trophy but we need to compete in all competitions. We felt that we needed a change. 'I have got an excellent relationship with him and told him he will always be a part of our history. Himself and his family are always welcome back. It was a collective decision. It wasn't my decision. We do everything together. Emotionally it was difficult but we believe we have made the right decision for the club.' Venkatesham described the 'thorough' process behind hiring Frank. Spurs identified 10 key characteristics which they felt a manager needed to possess to be successful and analysed more than 30 candidates before Frank emerged as their first choice. Venkatesham specifically praised Frank's track record of developing young talent after he improved Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa and Ivan Toney during his time with Brentford and previously worked with Denmark's youth teams. 'Whenever you have a new coach it is always a fresh start,' Levy said. 'You have different ideas. We want to build on the success of winning a trophy last season. One of the things that stood out to me with Thomas — clearly highly intelligent, great communicator, super human being plus all of the other technical aspects that are important.' Frank's first competitive game in charge of Spurs will be the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain on August 13. Before that, Spurs head to Hong Kong and South Korea for a pre-season tour where they will face Arsenal and Newcastle United. ()

Former Spurs executive reveals Suns' massive ask for Kevin Durant as trade talks intensify

Phoenix may as well be asking for the sun. The Spurs reportedly did not respond well to the Suns originally asking for reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and/or the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NBA draft in their trade talks for Phoenix star Kevin Durant, according to former Spurs executive Kirk Goldsberry. 'I know our friends in San Antonio think the price is too high,' Goldsberry, the team's former vice president of strategic research, said on 'The Zach Lowe Show' released Tuesday. Advertisement 'In the original discussions, including the No. 2 pick and/or Stephon Castle, are not going very well on the Spurs' end of the telephone, I can tell you that.' 3 Kevin Durant likely will be moved soon. Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images It's seemingly a foregone conclusion that the Suns will trade Durant this offseason and Phoenix may as well ask for the world for the 36-year-old. Advertisement The problem is the rest of the league may have a different price value on the future Hall of Famer and it seems that's the case. The Suns may be asking for too much and forced to alter their demands since they have 'no leverage,' the Arizona Republic reported Tuesday morning. Durant, while still an elite scorer, is older, missed time due to injury last year and has only year left on his deal. Advertisement Asking for Castle and/or the No. 2 pick is certainly a substantial ask from the Spurs, who are looking to build a winner around Victor Wembanyama. 3 Kirk Goldsberry (r) revealed the Spurs are not too pleased with the initial ask for Kevin Durant. @TheDunkCentral/X The No. 2 pick could be one of Rutgers' freshmen phenom duo in Dylan Harper or Ace Bailey, while Castle averaged 14.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists in addition to providing strong defense. Durant wants to be traded to the Spurs, Rockets or Heat, ESPN reported Saturday, but that doesn't necessarily help the Suns since it's possible the veteran could force his way to a team. Advertisement He reportedly has made it clear he doesn't want to head to Minnesota. 3 Stefon Castle won Rookie of the Year. David Gonzales-Imagn Images With the NBA draft beginning next Wednesday, any deal involving a 2025 pick would have to be completed soon and pundits have said they expect a trade in short order. The Suns moving on from Durant would mark an underwhelming end for the franchise's two-and-a-half seasons employing him. Phoenix won one playoff series in his time, while being swept in the first round in another and missing the postseason altogether this year.

One Manchester City player appears to have a spring in his step again

By Phil Foden's lofty standards, the 24/25 season was a disappointing one for the England international. Foden battled niggling injuries and mental fatigue throughout last season. The Manchester City midfielder has previously spoken of the mental battle he faced last season. Following the completion of the 24/25 season, Foden did get the opportunity to have a much-needed break from football. He looks sharp in training and his finishing has stood out. Advertisement The two clips below emphasise that there seems to be a crispness to Foden's play and especially his finishing. After having such a difficult 24/25 season it is also good to see Foden smiling again and enjoying his work. Manchester City will be hoping that Foden's training efforts are a sign of things to come. Manchester City will be hoping that Phil Foden can return to his best for the 25/26 season. Alongside Manchester City's new signings, Foden figures to be a vitally important player for Pep Guardiola's side. He is entering the prime years of his career and his disappointing 24/25 season may be looked back upon as a moment that spurred Foden on to greater heights if he can return to his best this season. The FIFA Club World Cup could be the ideal setting for Foden to lay the groundwork for what lies ahead next season. He does look sharp in training, and that's a positive sign. First and foremost, the hope is that Phil Foden is over the niggling injury issues he dealt with last season. It is further hoped that a brief break from the game helped Foden get over the mental fatigue he suffered during the 24/25 season. The early signs from Manchester City's training camp are positive in regards to Foden's progress. He looks sharp and that form should carry into Manchester City's opening FIFA Club World Cup fixture against Wydad AC.
