Former Spurs executive reveals Suns' massive ask for Kevin Durant as trade talks intensify
Phoenix may as well be asking for the sun.
The Spurs reportedly did not respond well to the Suns originally asking for reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and/or the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NBA draft in their trade talks for Phoenix star Kevin Durant, according to former Spurs executive Kirk Goldsberry.
'I know our friends in San Antonio think the price is too high,' Goldsberry, the team's former vice president of strategic research, said on 'The Zach Lowe Show' released Tuesday.

It's seemingly a foregone conclusion that the Suns will trade Durant this offseason and Phoenix may as well ask for the world for the 36-year-old.

The problem is the rest of the league may have a different price value on the future Hall of Famer and it seems that's the case.
The Suns may be asking for too much and forced to alter their demands since they have 'no leverage,' the Arizona Republic reported Tuesday morning.
Durant, while still an elite scorer, is older, missed time due to injury last year and has only year left on his deal.

Asking for Castle and/or the No. 2 pick is certainly a substantial ask from the Spurs, who are looking to build a winner around Victor Wembanyama.

The No. 2 pick could be one of Rutgers' freshmen phenom duo in Dylan Harper or Ace Bailey, while Castle averaged 14.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists in addition to providing strong defense.
Durant wants to be traded to the Spurs, Rockets or Heat, ESPN reported Saturday, but that doesn't necessarily help the Suns since it's possible the veteran could force his way to a team.

He reportedly has made it clear he doesn't want to head to Minnesota.

With the NBA draft beginning next Wednesday, any deal involving a 2025 pick would have to be completed soon and pundits have said they expect a trade in short order.
The Suns moving on from Durant would mark an underwhelming end for the franchise's two-and-a-half seasons employing him.
Phoenix won one playoff series in his time, while being swept in the first round in another and missing the postseason altogether this year.

Levy wants Spurs to be Premier League winners
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said he had no regrets over the hiring of Ange Postecoglou as he defended the decision to sack the Australian as manager. Postecoglou guided Spurs to their first trophy for 17 years by winning the Europa League last month. Advertisement However, that was not enough to save his job after finishing 17th in the Premier League. The decision to dismiss the former Celtic boss and appoint Thomas Frank has been met with a backlash from many among the Tottenham fan base. But Levy outlined his ambition for Spurs to be Premier League and Champions League winners some day. "I don't regret appointing Ange, I'm very grateful to Ange. In his first season we finished fifth and in his second we were over the moon to win a trophy," Levy told the club's in-house media. "But we need to compete in all competitions, and we felt that we needed a change. Advertisement "Emotionally it was difficult but we feel that we've made the right decision for the club." Tottenham have not won the English top flight since 1961 and have never won the Champions League. "We've won a European trophy, but it's not enough," Levy added. "It's what we haven't done that is more important. We need to win the league. We want to win the Premier League. We want to win the Champions League. We want to win." Levy has held his position at Tottenham for more than 25 years with Frank becoming the 13th permanent manager in that time. "Whenever you have a new coach, it's always a fresh start. (There are) always have different ideas but we want to build on the success of winning a trophy last season," he said. Timberwolves' 3-Time All-Star Linked as Centerpiece in Possible Kevin Durant Trade
Timberwolves' 3-Time All-Star Linked as Centerpiece in Possible Kevin Durant Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Timberwolves are among the teams most interested in trading for superstar Kevin Durant, which also renders them among the most likely landing spots for the future Hall of Fame forward. Advertisement Bill Simmons and Zach Lowe on the June 12 edition of "The Bill Simmons Podcast" named the Timberwolves and the San Antonio Spurs as the two franchises with the most buzz in NBA circles with regards to a Durant trade this summer. Both of the longtime league insiders dubbed the Spurs as the more likely destination given San Antonio's viable trade assets -- both in terms of current players and draft picks. However, Ian Begley of SNYtv authored an X report on Saturday, June 14, that supports a version of a Durant deal that might favor Minnesota. "One thing worth noting on potential Kevin Durant trades: there are important Suns voices who want to add a starting-caliber [center] this offseason," Begley wrote. "There are several pathways to do this, but KD trade obviously gives PHX the clearest path to one. As many others have said, MIN is among teams with current interest in Durant. Nothing has changed for me with the Knicks and Durant, despite the reported interest earlier this week. Still see it at as a long shot that Durant ends up in NY." Advertisement Lowe noted the combination of Phoenix Suns superstar Devin Booker and Gobert as "a thing" during his appearance on Simmons' podcast Thursday. Gobert is a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star who has been a big part of two consecutive trips for the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals. He averaged 12 points, 10.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 blocks per game last season at the age of 32. Meanwhile, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 blocks per game during his age-36 campaign with the Suns in 2024-25. Major Kevin Durant Trade News Emerges After Giannis Antetokounmpo Makes Bucks Decision
Major Kevin Durant Trade News Emerges After Giannis Antetokounmpo Makes Bucks Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The NBA trade market is starting to heat up, 15 days before the 2025 draft tips off. And that means superstars could be trading places in the weeks and months to come. Advertisement Milwaukee Bucks power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo has been named in trade rumors for weeks amid Milwaukee's third consecutive first-round playoff exit. However, Antetokounmpo is not planning to request a trade out of Milwaukee, meaning interested suitors -- like the New York Knicks, for example, will have to knock on a different MVP winner's door. That player could be Kevin Durant, who is set to leave Phoenix this summer after the Suns' expensively-assembled roster missed the playoffs entirely in 2024-25. ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst believes the Knicks are among a "handful" of contending clubs that will jostle to land Durant in the coming weeks. Windhorst expects the Suns to look into Durant's market "pretty soon," as the franchise recently has been focused on identifying a new head coach. Advertisement Now that Phoenix has hired former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Jordan Ott, Windhorst expects movement on the Durant front soon. But there is a catch: as it stands, Durant will be a free agent in 2026. "The key with Durant is this: he has one year left on his contract. Is he going to want to sign an extension, and is he going to want to be a part of the process of the trade, and are the Suns going to let him be involved in the process," Windhorst explained. Durant's fit in New York would be intriguing, and ESPN's Stephen A. Smith -- a diehard Knicks fan -- predicted Monday that the franchise would land both superstar players. With Antetokounmpo unwilling to leave Milwaukee right now, though, Smith and the Knicks fanbase may have to "settle" for Durant, who averaged 26.6 points on 52.7 percent shooting across 62 games this season.
