Former Celtics Star Announces Decision on Retirement
Former Celtics Star Announces Decision on Retirement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Prior to winning the NBA Championship last year, the Boston Celtics went through multiple eras and numerous stars between title victories. This includes their short-lived rebuilding era following the departures of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, who were traded to the Brooklyn Nets in 2013. Advertisement At the time, the expectation was that the Celtics would rebuild around Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green, who were each 27 and 26 years old at the time, respectively. Ultimately, this did not work out too well for Boston, and both players were gone from the team within a couple of seasons. Rondo last played during the 2021-22 season and has since retired. As for Green, however, he is still in the league and spent the last two seasons with the Houston Rockets. Boston Celtics forward Jeff Green (8)© Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images The Celtics drafted Green with the No. 5 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, but they immediately traded him to Seattle for Ray Allen. Boston eventually re-acquired Green from the Thunder at the 2011 NBA Trade Deadline for Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson. Advertisement Recently, the 18-year veteran gave an update on what the future of his playing career looks like, including a decision regarding a potential retirement. Though he has been in the NBA for nearly two decades and is past his prime, the 38-year-old has made it clear that he will not retire this season. Additionally, Green says he wants to at least reach 20 years in the NBA, which he would do in two more years (h/t The Zach Lowe Show). 'I want to play as long as I can,' Green said. 'The goal is to get to 20 years, [so] two shy. Houston has been home for me for the last couple of years, and I want to keep it that way. Hopefully, we can make something work where I can retire there, whether it be 20-21 years. My wife says 20 and that's it. So, I think I know what that is. So, two more years it is." Green is set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer. While his best days are behind him, the Maryland native still provides a lot of value, especially off the court. He has made it clear he wants to return to Houston, but regardless, Green's status this summer will be worth monitoring. As free agency looms, Jeff Green hopeful of re-signing with Rockets
As free agency looms, Jeff Green hopeful of re-signing with Rockets Jeff Green on his free agency outlook: 'Houston has been home for me for the last couple years, and I want to keep it that way. I love the situation.' In 2023-24, Jeff Green was a rotation fixture after signing with the Rockets in the NBA's 2023 free agency window. In 2024-25, Green fell out of the playing rotation for a young and improving Houston team that rose to No. 2 in the Western Conference standings (52-30). But at 38 years old (and soon to be 39), Green knows his best days are behind him, from a playing perspective. These days, he's happy to provide value as a leader and mentor near the end of a bench — and in that context, he's hopeful of returning to Houston next season. On a newly released episode of The Zach Lowe Show, Green said: I want to play as long as I can. The goal is to get to 20 years. I'm two (seasons) shy. Houston has been home for me for the last couple years, and I want to keep it that way. Hopefully we can make something work so that I can retire there, whether it be 20 or 21 years. My wife says 20 and that's it, so two more years it is. I love the situation in Houston, and I want to keep playing. Green's contract expires this offseason, and he will enter unrestricted free agency on June 30. Over the last two seasons, Green has averaged 6.2 points (46.8% FG) and 2.1 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game (110 appearances). Houston will have early Bird rights to re-sign Green thanks to his previous two-year contract. But with the surrounding roster getting more expensive, it seems likely that Green will be asked to take a paycut (relative to last season's $8 million) if he stays on the team. Warriors Being Heavily Linked to Celtics Star
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Golden State Warriors are entering a crucial offseason following a second-round playoff exit. The Warriors completely revamped the roster during the middle of the season, acquiring star forward Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat. More NBA news: Rich Paul Breaks Silence on LeBron James Remaining With Lakers Once Butler joined the Warriors, they instantly became one of the best teams in the entire NBA. Golden State used this to push them into the postseason, and they took down the No. 2-seeded Houston Rockets in round one. Now entering the summer, many around the league believe that Golden State could be very active. The Warriors want to upgrade the roster around star guard Stephen Curry and Butler, giving them a better chance to win next year. One name that could interest Golden State is guard Derrick White from the Boston Celtics. The Warriors have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for White if the Celtics decide to move on from him. NBA insider Zach Lowe mentioned the link between the two. "Another guy for the Warriors to look at going forward is Derrick White," The Ringer's Logan Murdoch told longtime NBA reporter Zach Lowe on The Zach Lowe Show. "I think that's something the Warriors are looking at right now. That's somebody who can play defense, can settle everyone down especially when you have a young group like that." More Photo byIn addition to Lowe, NBA insider Kevin O'Connor also mentioned the two together. "If the Golden State Warriors, if they were to call up and offer a Mikal Bridges-esque package -- four first-round draft picks -- for Derrick White, you gotta listen," O'Connor said. It remains to be seen what the Celtics will do with White, given that the team is expected to shed major salary this offseason. But if the veteran guard does become available, the Warriors do make a lot of sense. White is the type of player that any team would love to have, and he could fit in well alongside the star players. His defensive ability could help Golden State as well, giving them much more firepower to work with. For the season, White averaged 16.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. Golden State has multiple options to look into this offseason, but it seems that White could be a potential target. A trade proposal to land Derrick White with the Golden State Warriors
A trade proposal to land Derrick White with the Golden State Warriors Finding ways to improve the current roster will undoubtedly be a top priority for the Golden State Warriors' front office this summer. The addition of Jimmy Butler, while highly impactful, wasn't enough to ensure the franchise was among the genuine contenders in a loaded Western Conference. In a recent appearance on "The Zach Lowe Show," Logan Murdoch of The Ringer cited Derrick White as a potential target for the Warriors. White has been one of the Celtics best player for the past few seasons. However, with Jayson Tatum likely to miss the entire 2025-26 season due to an Achilles tear, Brad Stevens is expected to make some cost cutting moves. 'Another guy that I think you should look at for the Warriors going forward is Derrick White,' Murdock said. 'A guy like that I think is something that the Warriors are looking at right now because Boston is expected in league circles to have some sort of fire sale or some sort of maybe reset… Just somebody that can play defense and kind of just settle everyone down. Especially when you have a young group like that, you need to settle them down in the non-Steph [Curry] minutes, so that's something to figure out.' Following Murdoch's comments, Warriors Wire has pieced together what a potential trade package could look like: Celtics Get: Gary Payton II, Buddy Hield, Trayce Jackson-Davis, a 2027 first-round pick (lottery protected) Warriors Get: Derrick White As the Celtics are a second-apron luxury tax team, they're unable to aggregate salaries via a trade. As such, White can be the only player heading out of the door, unless the return allows Boston to escape the second apron. Therefore, if the Warriors wish to keep Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Butler, a move for White would be somewhat of a consolidation. It's also worth noting that the above trade proposal passes the rigorous trade machine test over on Spotrac. Hield makes considerable sense for Boston. Joe Mazzulla's team leads the league in 3-point volume and would welcome another elite sniper. At the same time, Jackson-Davis could emerge as a long-term solution to Al Horford, who may or may not return for another season. For Golden State, White would be an ideal two-guard next to Curry. He defends at an elite level, rarely makes the wrong read, and can hit the three of both the catch and the dribble. If the Celtics decide to part ways with the former San Antonio Spurs product, Golden State should certainly make its interest known. Unfortunately, White is likely viewed as untouchable by the franchise, with Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis potentially more available.

Report: Derrick White mentioned as potential name to watch for Warriors
Report: Derrick White mentioned as potential name to watch for Warriors Although the postseason is still rolling with the start of the conference finals, different rumors and offseason chatter are already beginning to stir for the other 26 eliminated teams. After being bounced from the second round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Golden State Warriors have been at the center of multiple rumors as they attempt to rebuild around Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green. Different names have already been floated as potential options for the Warriors in the summer. Add a former champ to the list. In a recent appearance on The Zach Lowe Show, The Ringer's Logan Murdock mentioned Boston Celtics guard Derrick White as a potential target for Golden State. In March, Shams Charania of ESPN reported the Celtics will be exploding trade options during the offseason. The Celtics are currently in the second apron with multiple large contracts on their roster. If he hits the trade block, White will likely have a high price tag. The former first-round pick can play fierce defense, handle the basketball and shoot from beyond the arc. In his fourth season with the Celtics, White averaged a career-high 16.4 points on 44.2% shooting from the field and 38.4% from deep to go along with 4.8 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.
