Dolphins, Bears finish in 24-24 tie in the preseason
Playing in a preseason opener for the first time since 2021, Tagovailoa completed 5 of 6 for 27 yards in a 15-play drive against Bears backups, but the Dolphins failed to score on their first drive because of a Bears goal-line stand.
Running back Jaylen Wright was stuffed by Bears linebacker Noah Sewell on fourth-and-goal from the 1. He later scored on a 7-yard run late in the first half.
Miami backup quarterbacks Zach Wilson and Quinn Ewers directed three touchdown drives and Jason Sanders made a 56-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Sanders' kick with 6:22 remaining tied the game at 24 and the Dolphins defense turned back a late Bears scoring drive at the Miami 41.
Ewers, who went 5 of 18 for 91 yards, completed a 21-yard pass to Alexander Mattison on an eight-play, 41-yard drive in the fourth quarter, leading to a 1-yard TD score by rookie running back Ollie Gordon with 11:48 remaining for a 21-17 Miami lead.
Wilson replaced Tagovailoa after the goal-line stand and completed 5 of 9 for 96 yards. He hit a 35-yard pass to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and set up the Dolphins first score, then a 34-yard completion to Tahj Washington to set up the second TD.
Wilson, signed as a free agent after three seasons with the Jets and one in Denver, is looking to revive a career that started when he was the second overall pick of the 2021 draft.
Ben Johnson's debut
Johnson, the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year as Detroit's offensive coordinator last season, decided to sit quarterback Caleb Williams and all the other starters except left tackle Braxton Jones. Jones is in a starting competition with rookie Ozzy Trapilo.
Johnson is attempting to help turn around a franchise with a long history of poor quarterback play and struggling offense. However, it was his team's defense that stood out in his first preseason game as they sacked Miami's Wilson and Ewers six times, including three by defensive end Austin Booker. One was a strip-sack at the 3-yard line to set up Case Keenum's third-quarter TD pass to rookie Deion Hankins for a 17-14 Chicago lead.
Kicking game
Bears kicker Cairo Santos has roster competition from former Michigan State kicker Jonathan Kim. However, it was Santos connecting from long distance in this game as he hit a 57-yarder to close the first half and draw the Bears within 14-10.
Santos' career long in the regular season is 55 yards, made in 2020.
Injuries
Miami running back Alexander Mattison left the game with a knee injury after being tackled on a 21-yard pass play and did not return.
Bears rookie safety Major Burns suffered a knee injury and left the game in the first half. He didn't return. Running back Travis Homer (calf) and linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga (shoulder) also left the game and did not return.

Rifles victorious in Prairie clash against Hilltops
It might be hyperbole to say a season-opening win was the biggest in recent memory for a team. That's not the case for the Winnipeg Rifles. The club remarkably rumbled to a convincing 31-11 victory over the Saskatoon Hilltops in Canadian Junior Football League Prairie Conference action at Maple Grove Rugby Park last weekend. BROOK JONES / FREE PRESS Winnipeg Rifles quarterback Riley Element led the team to a season-opening victory over the perennial CJFL powerhouse Saskatoon Hilltops. It's a significant result for two squads that have often been on opposite ends of the standings. The Rifles were coming off a 1-8 showing last summer and have struggled to find any resemblance to consistency in recent years, while the Hilltops continue to be perennial contenders for the national championship. The matchup between the Prairie foes hadn't been much of a rivalry for that reason. It's just the second time in the last 11 years that the Rifles have defeated the Hilltops (2022). 'It's huge, and I'll say this: that was the Saskatoon Hilltops we beat,' said Rifles head coach Geordie Wilson. 'Since 2006, Saskatoon has been in every Prairie Conference final. You talk about teams that — they think it's in their DNA to automatically win when they roll it out.' It's also just the second time since 2018 that the Rifles have begun a season with a win. 'They're the measuring stick in the CJFL year in, year out,' Wilson said. 'They're the dudes. So you feel good about that, but in saying that, we got a ton of work.' Wilson was confident his club was a quarterback away from better results. The Rifles have struggled to find a stable option at the most important position in recent years, and Wilson knew that if he didn't find a quarterback this off-season, his otherwise promising club would be in trouble once again. After exhausting resources locally, Wilson looked to La Belle Province, where he discovered Chateauguay (an hour south of Montreal) product Riley Element, a 6-4, 200-pound pivot who was finishing up his third and final season with the Vanier College Cheetahs of Quebec's CEGEP program — which is equivalent to community college in Manitoba. The fit was evident almost immediately. Wilson believed he found his guy, while Element thought Winnipeg offered a promising opportunity to realize his goal of reaching the CFL and studying to become an electrician. 'They welcomed me in right from the first day,' said Element, who comes from a football-crazed family. 'Obviously, you have to prove yourself in that way, but they welcomed me right away, and it was just a great fit. The city of Winnipeg, the province of Manitoba, has been great. It feels like my second home now.' Element completed 16-of-29 passes, tossing for 215 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions against the Hilltops. He connected with fellow newcomer Jalen McDonald and third-year receiver Jarome Penner for scores. Wilson said the 21-year-old signal-caller has been even better than he expected. 'It fires me up,' Element said upon hearing his head coach's review. 'I believe that everybody has their own journey, and now it's my time to shine with the team, and the team (to) shine. It doesn't give me pressure, really. Maybe pressure because you want to win, and I'm very competitive, but no type of nervous pressure.' It speaks to who Element is. He approaches the game with a quiet confidence, and he's not easily rattled, as evident by his first game as a member of the Rifles. Playing against Saint John's University in a pre-season contest, his first pass attempt was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Element bounced back immediately and put together a strong performance, just as he did against the Hilltops. 'He's not too serious a guy, but everyone knows that he wants to win and he's gonna do everything he can to help us make sure we get that win,' said fifth-year running back Kaiden Banfield. 'Everyone on the team is ready to play behind a guy like that, (a guy) that's willing to do everything he can to make sure we win the game.' Banfield, who is also on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers practice roster, is the focal point of the Rifles' offence again and has designs on being named to the CJFL All-Canadian team. He rushed 21 times for 79 yards and one touchdown against Saskatoon. The workhorse tailback is one of 19 starters to return from last season and one of four players who ranked inside the CJFL's top-50 pre-season rankings. Banfield ranks No. 30, while his brother, linebacker Kyler Banfield (No. 14), defensive lineman Zach Davis (No. 25) and linebacker Derek Gumieny (No. 44) joined him on the list. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Like the veteran he is, Banfield noted the Rifles haven't accomplished anything yet, but he didn't discount the effect that a season-opening win can have on this group. In the pre-season, he explained, there was a buy-in to the potential for the team, but since knocking off one of the country's powerhouses, there is a genuine belief that the Rifles could turn the corner in a big way this summer. 'I think it's huge for us, especially over a team like Saskatoon. It kind of shows where we are,' Banfield said. 'Before that game, I think everyone on the team knew we had it, we had the pieces and we could beat them, so after getting it done and actually beating them it's a confidence boost for our team overall, knowing that we can compete with anybody in the PFC (Prairie Football Conference) or in the CJFL week in and week out.' Next up are the Edmonton Wildcats, another program that has struggled in recent years but is coming off a victory over the Calgary Colts. The Wildcats and Rifles square off at Emerald Hills in Sherwood Park, Alta., on Sunday (2 p.m. CT). Joshua Frey-SamReporter Josh Frey-Sam reports on sports and business at the Free Press. Caleb Williams will get his first preseason playing time in Johnson's offense when Bears host Bills
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson sees the second preseason game as the ideal time to get quarterback Caleb Williams some on-field reps. Williams will see game action in Johnson's offense for the first time when the Bears host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night. Backups Tyson Bagent, Case Keenum and Austin Reed took the snaps in last Sunday's 24-24 tie against Miami in the preseason opener. 'Our starters are going to play, everyone is going to play,' Johnson said Wednesday. 'Last week and really all through camp I've been pretty consistent with the thought of reps, reps, reps are the most important thing to get (Williams) up to speed.' Johnson said he got Williams 80 to 100 practice plays within the offense that he wouldn't have had if he had played in Sunday's game. Of course, Williams wasn't facing a live defense trying to sack him. 'This week it's a different schedule, a different length of time in terms of between games, and all that,' Johnson said. 'So our plan right now is the guys that sat out last week they will be playing this week.' Williams' play in training camp practices has been inconsistent but Johnson has seen improvement from the second-year QB. 'I'm pleased with how he is able to spit these plays out right now,' Johnson said. 'He's made significant progress in that regard and once we get going here in a game week, we're going to condense the verbiage even more. But we have challenged him. It's been a lot. 'That was by design, and so if we struggle at all in the huddle to get the play out, then the delays are going to pop up. That's a little bit part of the learning process and us growing, but by design we have made this very challenging and hard and we know what we need to do as a staff to elevate some of that pressure. I think Week 1 we're going to be in a good spot.' What's less clear is who will start at left tackle. Starter Braxton Jones is being challenged by rookie Ozzy Trapilo. However, at Wednesday's practice, second-year undrafted free agent Theo Benedet alternated with Jones at left tackle with the starters, while Trapilo was the backup right tackle. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Jaylon Johnson 'on track' for return Cornerback Jaylon Johnson remains on the non-football injury list, but Ben Johnson sounded more optimistic Wednesday that the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback will be ready for the season opener. 'He's right on track, he's right where he need to be,' Johnson said. 'It's really like I said, those type of injuries you really don't know. Short term, long term, every guy is a little bit different, but I think we're going in the right direction.' ___ AP NFL:
