CoreWeave revenue beats estimates on AI boom but shares fall on bigger loss
Aug 12 (Reuters) - CoreWeave (CRWV.O), opens new tab easily topped quarterly revenue estimates on Tuesday as the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence tools boosted demand for its cloud services, but a bigger-than-expected net loss sent its shares slumping 10% after the bell. The company currently operates 33 AI data centers across the U.S. and Europe and offers access to backer Nvidia's (NVDA.O), opens new tab chips, which are highly coveted by enterprises to train and run large AI models amid intense competition. CoreWeave reported revenue backlog of $30.1 billion as of end of June, compared with $25.9 billion on March 31. "Demand is humming, but it is the cost of growth that tempered the stock down in aftermarket trading," said Michael Ashley Schulman of Running Point Capital Advisors. Operating expenses jumped to $1.19 billion in the second quarter, from $317.7 million a year earlier. The company posted a net loss of $290.5 million, compared with analysts' average estimate of $190.6 million, according to data compiled by LSEG. "We are scaling rapidly as we look to meet the unprecedented demand for AI," CEO Michael Intrator said in the earnings statement. Investors have also focused on the company's reliance on a few big customers. "The backlog surge to $30B+ suggests demand visibility well beyond 2025, but the concentration in mega-customers like OpenAI means those relationships remain both the crown jewel and the single point of failure," said eMarketer analyst Jeremy Goldman. Meanwhile, CoreWeave executives reiterated the benefits of its $9 billion all-stock deal for crypto miner Core Scientific (CORZ.O), opens new tab. The deal, announced in July, is facing opposition. Core Scientific's largest shareholder, Two Seas Capital, has said it would vote against the sale. CoreWeave reported second-quarter revenue of $1.21 billion, beating estimates of $1.08 billion. The Livingston, New Jersey-based company raised its annual revenue forecast to be between $5.15 billion and $5.35 billion. It had previously projected annual revenue of $4.9 billion to $5.1 billion. Shares of the company, which reaffirmed its annual capital expenditure projection, were trading at $133.71. They have gained nearly three-fold since the IPO in March.

Electric vehicle sales growth eases to 21% in July, research firm says
Aug 13 (Reuters) - Global electric vehicle sales grew 21% year-on-year in July, the slowest rate since January and down from 25% in June, as momentum in plug-in hybrid sales in China slackened, market research firm Rho Motion said on Wednesday. China is the world's biggest car market and accounts for more than half of global EV sales, which in Rho Motion's data include battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Its overall car sales growth slowed in July, with BYD ( opens new tab, the world's largest EV maker, recording its third monthly drop in registrations. The relatively muted slowdown in overall EV sales however shows other markets are taking up some of the slack, with European sales for one benefiting from incentives, opens new tab aimed at speeding up decarbonisation. Global sales of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids rose to 1.6 million units in July, Rho Motion data showed. China's EV sales growth, which averaged 36% a month in the first half, eased to 12% in July as the previously booming market was dampened by a pause in some 2025 government subsidy schemes for EV and plug-in hybrid purchases, Rho Motion data manager Charles Lester said. Chinese sales reached around one million vehicles. European sales surged 48% to about 390,000 units, while North American sales climbed 10% to more than 170,000. Sales in the rest of the world jumped 55% to more than 140,000 vehicles. "Despite regional variations, the overall trajectory for EV adoption in 2025 remains strongly upward," Lester said. Chinese car sales are expected to return to strong growth from August as new funds become available for its subsidy schemes, while a cut in U.S. tax credits for buying or leasing new EVs at the end of September will hurt demand there, Lester added.

McDonald's expanding its limits on sauces
Published: | Updated: A Reddit user was stunned to see this written at a drive-thru window: Four and six-pieces get one sauce, 10-pieces comes with two sauces, 20-pieces comes with three and a 40-piece box comes with a selection of four. Any extra sauces come with a charge. The rule has been 'getting out of hand' in the eyes of some customers — even though it is not 'a universal policy.' 'The McDonald's sauce policy in my area for the last few years has been any amount of nuggets = no sauce,' one Reddit user claimed . 'You have to go out of your way to demand they give you some sauce or you get nothing. I've literally stopped ordering nuggets there it's gotten so absurd.' Sauce policies have been spotted at McDonald's restaurants worldwide for quite some time — growing while the company suffered a dive in sales . But despite profits rising drastically in the second quarter of this year, down to the success of Minecraft Movie Meals and McCrispy Chicken Strips , the policy still exists. Customers worldwide insisted the rules are different depending on location — some claiming it costs nearly $1 per extra sauce. 'For us, the 4, 6 and 20 piece has the correct amount of sauces. The 40 piece on the other hand should be 6 sauces, not 4,' a McDonald's employee claimed on Reddit. 'My McDonald's gives away 2 free sauces, excluding the sauces that come with the nuggets. After that they charge you $0.19 for every extra sauce.' Besides the sauce restrictions, McDonald's has hiked prices on nearly all its menu items over the years — including its iconic Big Macs. But some employees have claimed McDonald's already came up with a sneaky way for customers to spend more money — purchasing offerings on its McValue platform . The opinions rolled in online last January after the platform launched from consumers and workers who claimed the deals and the new system were a 'total scam.' McDonald's has been hard at work trying to increase customer satisfaction — even extending stores' operating hours . It has also introduced new Happy Meals, and is set to do so again with a new adult Happy Meal celebrating the golden age of McDonaldland . Not only is the chain working to boost its customers' happiness, but it is also in the process of hiring 375,000 new employees in America . It is the company's biggest job push since 2020, and the hiring count will apply to individuals looking to work at any of the more than 13,000 McDonald's locations across the US. It also comes as comes as the chain prepares to open 900 new restaurants by the end of 2027. The fast food chain outlined the plans in May in Ohio at an event attended by President Donald Trump's Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer. 'McDonald's is sparking a ripple effect of prosperity for our workers, communities and the economy,' DeRemer said. 'By expanding their workforce, the corporation will be driving investment and setting the standard for industry growth, whether as a launch pad for a different career or as a ladder for internal achievements.'
