'My friend named daughter after a food and baby's nickname is even worse'

Daily Mirror11-06-2025
A woman has shared her shock after hearing what her friend is naming her newborn daughter, as she explains how her entire family reacted to the news at the child's gender reveal party
Choosing a baby name isn't always easy, especially when you consider your family and friends' opinions on your favourite monikers. But one woman has become a laughing stock among her friends after announcing her daughter's unusual moniker at her gender reveal party.
Taking to Reddit to share her shock over the name, a friend said: "My one of my parents friends are pregnant and just had their baby shower. I attended and after the gender reveal (it's a girl), the name was announced: Paprika - like the spice.

"They said that they did this so that they could call her Pika, like Pikachu. The baby shower was Pokemon themed.

"Their family was visibly confused and didn't know how to react."
Wanting to hear other peoples' thought on the name, she shared it on Reddit's tragedeigh thread, a group created to share names that have been "deliberately misspelled or completely made up to appear more unique than they actually are".
Commenting on the moniker, one user said: "Wouldn't people end up calling her Prika or Rika? They like Pika but chose a longer name that they will shorten and drop a middle letter. But not the longer name from which they got Pika. It all makes sense!"
Another user added: "At least the spelled it correctly."
A third user said: "Name reveal is a terrible idea. If you meet a baby and the baby is introduced, you can react about how cute the baby is, who they look like, or whatever.

"If you're told a baby has been born, you can react with interest about all sorts of things. But with a big Name Reveal, you're going to be expected to react to the name specifically, which is awkward if you don't love it."
Another user said: "My neighbour's yappy Maltese is named Pika(chu)."
One more user added: "As a long time Pokémon fan, this is absolutely ridiculous."

Another user said: "If I was that baby honestly I'd rather be named Paprika rather than literal Pikachu. Not a good name, but we have literal food names playing in the playground. It's not the worst."
A final user said: "It's legal to name the kid Pikachu, why not?"
While it's not illegal to name your child after a Pokémon in the UK, there's an every growing list of banned monikers worldwide.

In Sweden, in 1996, a family wanted to name their child 'Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116'. However, unsurprisingly, this was not approved by the government despite the family's insistence that it's pronounced Albin.
When the name was rejected, the family tried to name their son A instead - again pronounced Albin - but this was also turned down.
In the end, they ended up calling him Albin, pronounced as such.
In Japan, a couple sparked controversary after attempting to name their son Akuma, which means devil.
In 1994, the father explained how he chose the name because he wanted his son to stand out in life with an unforgettable moniker, making him appear powerful.
The family faced a legal battle to keep the name but ended up backing down and changing their son's moniker.

Love Is Blind UK fans slam furious rant by star in very public display

The next batch of episodes have been released on Netflix ‌ A Love Is Blind UK star released a furious rant towards an ex in an explosive row during a reunion party. ‌ Today (August 20) saw the next four episodes of the brand new Love Is Blind UK released on Netflix where the newly engaged couples began to navigate their new lives together. But with that, comes more hurdles and obstacles as they live with one another and meet each other's loved ones. ‌ As well as tensions rising between the couples, this week also saw a reunion party with the fellow Love Is Blind cast, but it ended in an explosive row. Last week saw human design coach Patrick being guided by his 'spleen' as he decided against proposing to professional singer Aanu. But when the pair came face to face in this week's episodes, Aanu was far from impressed. She said: " I'm quite, what you see is what you get, which I feel like I've not had the same gratitude from you." Apologising for "ruining her experience", Aanu interrupted Patrick as she continued: "You took the experience away from me Patrick. You reassured me so much with your words." She went on to say: "It's let me know then and there. You didn't let me know then and there... You're a liar, you're a liar, you're a liar." Things soon turned sour as Patrick said: "There is no way that me and you were meant to be together..... At the end I basically had to make a decision." But Aanu interrupted, saying: "Your head scarf looks silly as well, it doesn't match your outfit... Why have you got a head scarf on anyway?" ‌ Branding the comment as "crazy", Patrick replied: "I thought it would be a good look for me." Aanu eventually stormed away from the conversation, as she stated: "Good luck with your splenic rectum." And fans have been unimpressed with the altercation. ‌ Over on Reddit, one user said "Aanu did not Carry herself Well.. that was embarrassing. For her. So uncontrolled." Another said they were "embarrassed", adding: "Yeah she was messy both in the Javen interactions and how hard she went in on Patrick. Embarrassed for her." A third commented: "I'm not done with the episode yet but 'my spinal rectum' made me spit out my water." One fan was left "crying" as they said: "I think his spleen is being burst a bit here crying." On X, one fan said: "'Good luck with your splenic rectum' IM F***** SCREAMING." As another replied: "Aanu", coupled with a line of laughing emojis. A third penned: "I get Aanu was feeling annoyed about how her situation with Patrick ended but she just started acting immature and not letting him talk + making silly jabs .. it was a bit weird."

Pokemon fans are just realising they've been saying legendary monster's name wrong

There are now over 1,000 creatures in the Pokémon franchise, and it turns out most fans have been pronouncing one of the most popular ones incorrectly for 23 years Pokémon is one of the most beloved franchises in gaming. Since 1996, around 122 games have been released, including 38 mainline titles, amounting to over 489 million units sold worldwide. These games are split into nine generations, with each one introducing more and more Pokémon. While the initial release included just 151 creatures, the total is now at 1,025. ‌ With so many Pokémon for fans to remember, it's no wonder some of them might get forgotten or mispronounced, as people aren't as familiar with them. But it turns out one monster we've all been pronouncing wrong for years is one of the most popular Pokémon out there - and it was released 23 years ago. ‌ In a video shared by Game Central on TikTok, it was claimed the Pokémon Company confirmed that most of us, especially those in the UK, have likely been pronouncing the name of the Legendary Pokémon from 2002, Rayquaza, completely incorrectly all this time. ‌ Rayquaza is a large, green, serpentine Pokémon that served as the mascot for Pokémon Emerald. In an English accent, the most common pronunciation is "Ray-quar-zah" - but we've now been told that's not right. Instead, the Pokémon should be pronounced as "Ray-quay-zuh". This is something that our neighbours in the US may have been doing already, but it often sounds jarring to Brits. Rayquaza is pronounced this way because the end of its name is supposed to derive from the word "quasar," which is the term for a luminous galactic core powered by a supermassive black hole. Quasars are known to be the brightest objects in the universe, and Rayquaza is quite literally a cosmic dragon, which would make the space connection make sense. The official X account for Pokémon also confirmed this pronunciation in a post earlier this month, boldly stating in no uncertain terms that the creature should be pronounced "Ray-KWAY-zuh." ‌ Commenters on the Game Central video were baffled by the news, as many said they'd been pronouncing it the incorrect way ever since the Pokemon was released back in 2002. One person said: "I know the pronunciation. I just refuse to use it." Another added: "The person who made the GIF says it's pronounced JIF. Sometimes the creators are wrong." While a third agreed, writing: "Pokémon itself can be wrong. Remember, the creator of .gif files says his own creation incorrectly." Others pointed out that Rayquaza isn't the only Pokémon people have been mispronouncing. They claimed that the 2009 Legendary Pokémon, Arceus, should be pronounced as "Ar-kee-us," although most people would assume it should be said as "Ar-see-us."

Just beforehand, he revealed that he was dating lingerie model Yasmin Amelia - also known as Yasmin Bennett. His fans on Reddit claimed that he was taken, but noted that he has usually kept his cards close to his chest when it came to his personal life. One wrote on the forum platform: "Caught me off guard because he is a very private person especially about his dating/love life. "Even on the pod he has expressed his desire to keep things private and off socials. "Often relies on the 'can't talk to women'/catfish story to dodge specific relationship questions." However, the star has now broken his silence over the timing, saying that he wanted 'full control' of the narrative. Speaking on the Useless Hotline Podcast, he admitted: "That's part of the reason why we wanted to say something. "Because the two options were, say something. You have full control over how it comes out." However, the star rubbished the infamous 'Strictly Curse', as he claimed that it would not affect him. Strictly's George Clarke 'gives away' who his pro dance partner is George said: "Whatever you say is basically how people find out, or it stays private." He then explained that he didn't want there to be any rumours or anything that could ruin his relationship. The star added: "[it] just sort of takes all the control out of your hands. "But then, I [will] just go on stream after that and be like, that's not true, by the way. "But, yeah, she's my girlfriend." He also said that his girlfriend is still her own person and is getting used to being thrown into the public eye. This comes after he may have accidentally let slip who he's partnered with for this year's series. On the podcast he also spoke about the audition process where he revealed that he was partnered with Lauren Oakley. He also admitted that the duo rehearsed for a full hour together, as he explained: "I've not met anyone apart from, I believe her name's Lauren, who was the pro that I met. "Because when we had a interview for it, so it's like an hour long interview, and then like an hour long dance session." Lauren has appeared on the show since 2022, and so far has competed with two stars – Krishnan Guru-Murthy, who placed 8th, and JB Gill last year. She took over from fellow pro Amy Dowden mid-season after she was forced to withdraw due to injury. 7 George was the sixth star to be announced to be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing Credit: PA 7 The star explained that he would address any rumours that come out Credit: Instagram 7 Fans on Reddit noted that the star has always been private about his personal life Credit: Instagram
