‘We lost our jobs overnight': Techie's Reddit post goes viral after sudden shutdown

Mint09-07-2025
Imagine showing up for work thinking it's just another regular day, only to walk out unemployed by lunchtime. That's exactly what happened to 19 employees at a tech startup that shut down without warning, leaving its staff stunned and jobless.
A Reddit post titled 'Our startup shut down overnight—19 of us lost our jobs' has struck a chord with thousands online. Shared by a now-former employee, the post details how the team learned—through an urgent all-hands meeting—that the company had run out of funds and would be shutting down with immediate effect.
'It was supposed to be just another normal workday,' the Reddit user wrote. 'But around midday, we all got an unexpected email from the CEO calling for an urgent all-hands meeting.'
The mood quickly shifted from business-as-usual to disbelief. According to the post, the CEO informed employees that all investors had pulled out, and there was no money left, even for salaries. The company would cease operations immediately.
'We wouldn't be getting paid this month, and effective immediately, the company was shutting down… Just like that, a four-year-old startup was gone.'
What's shocked many online is the lack of warning. There were no prior signs, no layoffs, no bridge funding plans, just a sudden collapse.
'It still hasn't fully sunk in. We had our struggles, sure, but there was no communication that we were in real trouble,' the user added.
The anonymous poster, who says they worked in Rust programming for the past eight months, also used the platform to seek support, resume reviews, and job leads.
'I'm posting this partly to process everything, and partly to hear from others who've gone through something similar.'
The post quickly gained traction, with thousands of upvotes and hundreds of comments from users expressing sympathy, sharing advice, and even offering job referrals.
While the glamour of startup culture often dominates headlines, flexible hours, bean bags, and unicorn valuations, this post is a sobering reminder of its unpredictability. Behind the scenes, startups often operate with tight runway margins, investor pressures, and limited safety nets for employees.
With India and the global tech ecosystem experiencing a wave of layoffs and shutdowns post-pandemic and amid a funding winter, stories like this are becoming alarmingly common.
For many, the Reddit post serves as a wake-up call.
'I was exactly in this situation last month. I know how overwhelming it feels right now. Take some time to process it. Reach out to HR, they probably know people with openings for your experience, although chances might be small. Update your profiles, have some open source projects you can showcase on github. Keep applying.,' one commenter advised.
Another user advised, 'Notch up your skills and also start preparing for interviews. Actual work and clearing interview are two different things. So focus more on interview prepration. Ask AI to make mock interviews for you and dedicate max time in interview preparation alongside keep applying. Cold mail HR ( get emails from linkedin ) 3-4 time a week to same HR. Daily 15 mails.'
While the CEO reportedly promised to use his network to help the team find new roles, the employees were left questioning the lack of transparency that led to this sudden closure.

Worried your data is used to train AI models? Here's how to opt-out (if you can)

Fueled by vast troves of data, the generative AI boom is prompting several tech companies to quietly update their privacy policies and terms of service so that they may use your data to train their AI models or licence it out to other companies for the same purpose. Last week, popular filesharing service WeTransfer faced immediate backlash from users after it revised the platform's terms of service agreement to suggest that files uploaded by users could be used to 'improve machine learning models.' The company has since tried to patch things up by removing any mention of AI and machine learning from the document. While WeTransfer has backtracked on its decision, the incident shows that user concerns over privacy and data ownership have intensified in the age of AI. Tech companies are scraping publicly available, copyright-protected data from every nook and corner of the internet to train their AI models. This data might include anything you've ever posted online, from a funny tweet to a thoughtful blog post, restaurant review, and Instagram selfie. While this indiscriminate scrapping of the internet has been legally challenged in courts by several artists, content creators, and other rights holders, there are also certain steps that individual users can take to prevent everything they post online from being used for AI training. As more and more users have rallied to raise concerns about this issue, many companies now let individuals and business customers opt out of having their content used in AI training or being sold for training purposes. If you are an artist or content creator who wants to know if your work has been scraped for AI training, you can visit the website 'Have I Been Trained?', which is a service run by tech startup Spawning. If you've discovered that your data has been used to train AI models, here's what you can (and can't) do about it depending on the platform. Keep in mind that while many companies choose to opt-in their users for AI training by default, opting out does not necessarily mean that the data already used for AI training or part of datasets will be erased. If you have a business or school Adobe account, you are automatically opted out of AI training. For those who have a personal Adobe account, follow these steps: -Visit Adobe's privacy page -Scroll down to the Content analysis for product improvement section -Press the toggle off Google says that user interactions with its Gemini AI chatbot may be selected for human review to help improve the underlying LLM. Follow these steps to opt out of this process: -Open Gemini in your browser, -Go to Activity -Select the Turn Off drop-down menu -Turn off the Gemini Apps Activity If you have an X account, follow these steps to opt out of your data being used to train Grok, the chatbot developed by Elon Musk's xAI: -Go to Settings -Go to privacy section, then Privacy and safety -Open the Grok tab -Uncheck the data sharing option In September last year, LinkedIn announced that data including user posts will be used to train AI models. Follow these steps to prevent your new LinkedIn posts from being used for AI training: -Go to your LinkedIn profile -Open Settings -Click on Data Privacy -Toggle off the option labeled 'Use my data for training content creation AI models.' According to OpenAI's help pages, web users who want to opt out of AI training can follow these steps: -Navigate to Settings -Go to Data Controls -Uncheck 'improve the model for everyone' option In the case of its image generator DALL-E, OpenAI said that users who want their images to be removed from future training datasets have to submit a form with their details such as name, email, and whether they own the rights to the content. While these steps may get you to opt out of AI training, it is worth noting that many companies building AI models or machine learning features have likely already scraped the web. These companies often tend to be secretive about what data has been swept into their training datasets as they are wary of copyright infringement lawsuits or facing scrutiny by data protection authorities. The tech industry largely believes that anything publicly available online is fair game for AI training. For instance, Meta scrapes publicly-shared content from users above 18 for AI training with exceptions only for users in countries that are part of the European Union (EU).

TCS new benching policy: Employees face uncertainty, fear layoffs - here's what's happening

The exact impact of the benching policy on the TCS workforce remains uncertain. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employees are worried about layoffs as the first round of the new benching policy at India's largest IT services giant ends. Several TCS employees appear to be taking to social media platforms like Reddit to express their concerns about their role and future in TCS. The newly implemented benching guidelines effective from June 12 restrict the non-billable period to 35 days annually, beyond which employees could face professional setbacks or possible job loss. According to an ET report, employees have reported various challenges, including urgent project searches, assignments in mismatched skill areas, unsuccessful client interviews, and difficulties securing projects in preferred locations. A concerned Reddit participant was quoted as saying, "This is the first step towards employment rationalisation based on utilisation. Brace for layoffs." A new recruit shared, "I have recently joined TCS and training was conducted in Java. Now, it's not even a month on bench and RMG is pressuring me to join a *** support project, far from Java and Python." However, the financial daily could not verify the veracity of the posts on Redditt. What is the TCS Benching Policy ? Explaining the revised bench policy, TCS chief executive and managing director K Krithivasan told Times of India: "It's always been expected that associates take responsibility for their careers. While HR supports project placement, we also expect associates to proactively seek new assignments after completing existing ones. What you're seeing now is simply a more structured version of what's long been in practice. We aim to minimise bench time." Also Read | Infosys vs Cognizant fight gets uglier! Why are the two big IT firms battling it out in the US? Explained The company prioritises substantial investment in employee development. "Once we've made that investment, we work to ensure associates are deployed," he said. "While preferences are considered, projects are driven by client needs, not personal choice. We deploy based on training, demand, and skill alignment. If gaps exist, we work to close them before deployment." When questioned about TCS withholding salaries for staff on extended bench periods, Krithivasan offered no direct response. TCS Benching Policy Impact The exact impact on the TCS workforce remains uncertain. Based on industry data, approximately 15-18% of employees at major Indian IT companies typically remain on bench. TCS, which leads India's IT sector, currently employs around 613,000 individuals. Last week a workers' rights organisation approached Union labour minister Mansukh Mandaviya, requesting immediate intervention regarding TCS's bench policy, which they described as "inhumane," "exploitative" and mentally taxing for technology professionals. Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) submitted a formal complaint to the minister, claiming that TCS is pressuring benched employees through termination threats and withholding experience certificates if they cannot secure project assignments within specified timeframes. Also Read | TCS gives out variable pay! Over 70% employees to get 100% variable; no decision yet on salary hikes "These are not non-performing employees, but skilled professionals who find themselves temporarily without allocation… Instead of support, they are met with suspicion, coercion, and threats," NITES president Harpreet Singh Saluja said in the letter. Some staff members are however backing TCS' decision, noting that numerous employees have stayed unassigned for extended periods, turning down offered projects. These individuals have used their unallocated time for pursuing additional qualifications whilst not contributing to the organisation's productivity. "This may help TCS trimming some seriously underperforming resources, those stuck on TCS like a leech," a Reddit user posted. TCS Benching Policy: Industry Impact The IT sector anticipates significant changes as artificial intelligence (AI) begins to automate routine operations. "We expect IT companies to become stricter with their bench policies due to the soft business environment and AI-led demand for advanced skill sets," Pareekh Jain, founder and CEO of EIIRTrend told ET. He observed that staff expenses are notably affecting company profit margins. The stringent bench policy implemented by TCS might influence other IT firms, as managing bench strength becomes increasingly challenging due to AI-driven productivity improvements making it harder to reassign entry-level engineers, according to industry specialists. "Tech companies must continuously align their employees' skill sets with evolving client needs. By revisiting their bench policies, organisations are encouraging employees to reskill and stay relevant in high-demand areas such as AI, cybersecurity, and digital engineering," said Nitin Bhatt, technology sector leader at EY India according to the financial daily's report. "Going forward, tenure and grade-based promotions and merit increases will likely be replaced by assessments of skills proficiency and competencies required to take on new roles," he added. Sam Altman says OpenAI LLM achieved IMO gold-level Math skills, GPT-5 launch coming soon

OpenAI model scored 35/42 in 2025 IMO mock test Evaluated under same conditions as human participants GPT-5 coming soon, but won't match IMO model's capabilities An experimental large language model (LLM) developed by OpenAI has achieved gold medal-level performance at the 2025 International Math Olympiad (IMO), setting a new benchmark in mathematical reasoning for AI systems. Announcing the milestone, OpenAI researcher Alexander Wei posted on X that the model solved five out of six problems from the latest IMO under human exam conditions. The model earned 35 out of 42 possible points, a score that would qualify for a gold medal at the real competition. 'We evaluated our models on the 2025 IMO problems under the same rules as human contestants: two 4.5 hour exam sessions, no tools or internet, reading the official problem statements, and writing natural language proofs,' Wei explained. The IMO is regarded as the most prestigious high school maths competition globally, known for its notoriously complex problems. Wei pointed out that such problems demand extended creative reasoning and that achieving gold-level performance represents a leap from earlier benchmarks. 'We've now progressed from GSM8K (~0.1 min for top humans) MATH benchmark (~1 min) AIME (~10 mins) IMO (~100 mins),' he said. Submissions were graded independently by three former IMO medallists, who unanimously validated the model's solutions. According to Wei, 'the model solved P1 through P5; it did not produce a solution for P6.' He shared the model's answers publicly, noting its 'distinct style,' owing to its experimental nature. Wei said what makes the result even more impressive is that IMO proofs are long, complex and hard to verify. "By going beyond the reinforcement learning paradigm of clear-cut, verifiable rewards we've obtained a model that can craft intricate, watertight arguments at the level of human mathematicians.' The LLM that achieved this result will not be released publicly any time soon. Wei clarified that while OpenAI is preparing to launch GPT-5, this IMO-level model is part of a different research track. 'We don't plan to release a model with IMO gold level of capability for many months.' OpenAI CEO Sam Altman echoed this in a follow-up post, calling the achievement 'a significant marker of how far AI has come over the past decade.' He clarified that this model is not a specialised maths system, but a general-purpose reasoning model. 'We are releasing GPT-5 soon but want to set accurate expectations: this is an experimental model that incorporates new research techniques we don't plan to release a model with IMO gold level of capability for many months,' Altman added. Looking back, Wei also reflected on how far AI progress has exceeded expectations. 'In 2021, my PhD advisor Jacob Steinhardt had me forecast AI math progress by July 2025. I predicted 30 per cent on the MATH benchmark Instead, we have IMO gold.' He credited collaborators including Sheryl Hsu and Noam Brown, and concluded by congratulating all 2025 IMO participants, noting that many OpenAI researchers are former IMO medallists themselves.
