Teen prodigy cast in 'Sinners' shares No. 1 lesson he learned from Michael B. Jordan
The 20-year-old music prodigy has been performing since he was a child, and by the age of 16 was touring with the Grammy-winning artist H.E.R.
Indeed, Caton recently told Variety that it was because of his performance at one of H.E.R.'s concerts that he was first approached about making his Hollywood acting debut.
"She called me one day after we got back from tour, and she was like, 'Bro, somebody was in the crowd watching you, and they want you to audition for this role. I think you'll be dope,'" he said. "I did the audition, got a call back, and then sent in a couple of videos of me playing. A couple weeks later, I got the call, and that was it."
In 'Sinners," Caton plays a gifted young guitarist whose music sets into action the film's bloody chain of events. Coogler, who directed Caton through his debut performance, said he knew right away that he was the right person for the role.
"You could just tell the kid was special," Coogler told Variety. "He was a good enough singer that he didn't have to finish high school, but he did anyway. There was something to that. I was like, 'Oh, man, we've gotta bring this kid in.'"
Caton enjoyed his first experience on a film set. He said that working with so many talented actors — the cast includes Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo and Jack O'Connell in addition to start Michael B. Jordan — made him feel like "I gotta bring my A-game."
"One thing that I learned was that you can't be afraid to make mistakes," he said. "[Michael B. Jordan] taught me that it's about being present and having a conversation within the scene."
With 'Sinners' poised to have a second strong weekend at the box office following its huge $63 million global debut, Caton is already looking forward. He told Vanity Fair that on top of new music, he's hoping to continue acting.
"I'm so excited," he said. "This is an incredible moment right now, and I'm just soaking it all in."

Wrexham smashes its transfer record by signing Broadhead in a deal worth up to $13.5M
Wrexham's spending moved into a new stratosphere Thursday when the team owned by Hollywood celebrities signed winger Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich in a club-record deal that could reportedly reach 10 million pounds ($13.50 million). It took the Welsh club's outlay in the transfer market to more than 20 million pounds ($27 million) in this window as Wrexham reshapes its squad for life in the second-tier Championship following an unprecedented three straight promotions. The 27-year-old Wales international is a former Wrexham academy player and a versatile forward who was a fringe player at Ipswich in the Premier League last season. 'He's a local boy who had a real desire to come and play for his hometown club," Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said in the team's announcement. Leonardo DiCaprio Regrets Not Starring In Boogie Nights
Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio appears to have it all — including some regrets. The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood star has spent the past three decades curating one of the most impressive filmographies of his generation, working with historic directors such as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Quentin Tarantino. However, he's still kicking himself over one major misstep, an admission he made during a recent Esquire interview with Paul Thomas Anderson, whose 1997 film Boogie Nights took Hollywood by storm. At the time, Anderson was a 27-year-old wunderkind. 'I'll say it even though you're here: My biggest regret is not doing Boogie Nights,' the actor confirmed. 'It was a profound movie of my generation. I can't imagine anyone but Mark [Wahlberg] in it. When I finally got to see that movie, I just thought it was a masterpiece. 'It's ironic that you're the person asking that question,' he told Anderson, 'but it's true.' The duo is promoting their first collaboration, One Battle After Another, an action-thriller comedy inspired by Thomas Pynchon's Vineland. It follows a former revolutionary, now past his prime, embarking on a wild quest to find his missing daughter. 'Why did it take us so long?' Anderson asked DiCaprio about finally working together. Anderson certainly wanted DiCaprio for Boogie Nights, which painted a bleak portrait of the porn industry's rise in California, but was famously turned down — as DiCaprio already had a prior commitment at the time to star in a film called Titanic. He reportedly urged Anderson to cast Wahlberg, his The Basketball Diaries (1995) co-star. Anderson did just that, practically transforming the former model and rapper into a respected actor. The role of Dirk Diggler indeed demanded a lot of the lead actor, including scenes of emotional desperation, drug-fueled paranoia and a whole lot of nudity. This isn't the first time DiCaprio has rued missing out on Boogie Nights. He first revealed turning it down during a 2008 GQ interview with Titanic director James Cameron, who cheekily asked DiCaprio if he would make a different choice 'if you could go back.' 'I'm not saying I would have,' DiCaprio replied at the time. 'But it would have been a different direction, career-wise. I think they're both great and wish I could have done them both.'
