Age concession for direct recruitment into T.N. government service to remain till September 2026

The Hindu17-05-2025
The State government has decided to allow the one-time concession in maximum age limit for various competitive exams for direct recruitment into government service till September next year. In view of the delay in conducting various exams due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the State government in September 2021 issued orders enhancing the maximum age limit for direct recruitment by two years.
In a recent communication, Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam clarified that the decision was a 'one-time concession' and added that this would be applicable only to recruitment by various agencies and appointing authorities (made through notification) till September 12, 2026.
Necessary amendments to the special rules/ad hoc rules be needed in this regard by the respective departments, Mr. Muruganandam added. The communication has been sent to all government departments, Collectors, the Madras High Court, the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, the Teachers Recruitment Board, the Medical Services Recruitment Board, the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, and the Tamil Nadu Forest Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, among others.
In 2021, the then Minister for Finance and Human Resources Management had announced the one-time age concession in the Assembly. The Human Resources Management Department on September 13, 2021 issued orders for the same. However, it did not specify as to how long the concession would remain in effect. Meanwhile, some government departments raised doubts if the relaxation continued to be in place. The Chief Secretary's clarification was in response to these concerns. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had announced that several thousand posts in the government service would be filled.

Ousted FDA vaccine chief Vinay Prasad returning to agency

Washington, Aug 11 (AP) A Food and Drug Administration official is getting his job back as the agency's top vaccine regulator, less than two weeks after he was pressured to step down at the urging of biotech executives, patient groups and conservative allies of President Donald Trump. Dr Vinay Prasad is resuming leadership of the FDA centre that regulates vaccines and biotech therapies, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement Monday. Prasad left the agency late last month after drawing ire of right-wing activists, including Laura Loomer, because of his past statements criticizing Trump. A longtime a critic of FDA's standards for approving medicines, Prasad briefly ordered the maker of a gene therapy for Duchenne's muscular dystrophy to halt shipments after two patient deaths. But that action triggered pushback from the families of boys with the fatal condition and libertarian supporters of increased access to experimental medicines. Prasad's decision to pause the therapy was criticized by The Wall Street Journal editorial board, former Republican Sen Rick Santorum and others. The FDA swiftly reversed its decision suspending the therapy's use. Loomer posted online that Prasad was 'a progressive leftist saboteur," noting his history of praising liberal independent Sen. Bernie Sanders. But Prasad has had the backing of FDA Commissioner Marty Makary and health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, who have both called for scrutinizing the use of COVID-19 vaccines. Under Prasad, the FDA restricted the approval of two new COVID-19 shots from vaccine makers Novavax and Moderna and set stricter testing requirements for future approvals. Gems & jewellery exporters raise fears of job loss due to US tariffs

India's gems and jewellery exporters, citing high dependency on the US market, have expressed fears of job losses as steep 50 per cent tariffs would make Indian exports uncompetitive, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) said in a statement on Monday. The exporters said that the US tariffs would have far-reaching repercussions across the economy—'disrupting critical supply chains, stalling exports, and threatening thousands of jobs'—as the US is the sector's single largest market, accounting for over $10 billion in exports, nearly 30 per cent of the industry's total global trade. 'A blanket tariff of this magnitude is severely devastating for the sector. There is significant dependency on the US market, as 85 per cent of exports from SEEPZ Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which provides 50,000 jobs, are directed there,' the GJEPC said in a statement. This assumes significance as the sector has witnessed only marginal growth over the years. Exports across all the previous five years remained within the range of $35 billion to $40 billion, except for FY2020–2021 when exports plunged to $26.61 billion due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) survey, in 2019 there were a total of 9.89 lakh units and 42.89 lakh workers in the gems and jewellery sector in India. The sector, with total exports of around $38.11 billion, accounted for 8.45 per cent of India's merchandise exports in 2022–23 and is among the top five leading foreign exchange earners for the country, the GJEPC said. 'In FY2022–2023, exports of gems and jewellery decreased by (-) 2.94 per cent to $38.11 billion from $39.26 billion in FY2021–22,' the GJEPC said. Exporters said that competing manufacturing hubs such as Turkey, Vietnam and Thailand continue to enjoy significantly lower tariffs of 15 per cent, 20 per cent and 19 per cent respectively, making Indian products relatively less competitive in the US market. 'This imbalance, if unaddressed, could erode India's long-standing position as a key supplier to the US,' exporters said. 'We are also concerned about the possibility of trade rerouting through low-tariff destinations such as Mexico, Canada, Turkey, UAE, or Oman—undermining the spirit of legitimate trade and impacting transparency,' the GJEPC said. The exporters asked the government to introduce a targeted scheme on the lines of Duty Drawback or a reimbursement scheme, covering approximately 25–50 per cent of the new tariffs imposed on gems and jewellery exports to the US from August to December 2025. 'This initiative aims to partially offset the impact of the new tariff structure, mitigate financial strain on exporters, reduce the risk of order cancellations, and help maintain India's market share in an increasingly competitive and price-sensitive global market,' the exporters said. With respect to working capital facilities sanctioned, lending institutions may be permitted to allow a deferment of interest for six months, from August 1, 2025 to January 1, 2026, as was done during the COVID-19 period, the GJEPC said. By allowing reverse job work to SEZs, the SEZ units would be able to utilise their machinery and engage their labour for the manufacture and supply of jewellery in the domestic tariff area (DTA), which could be a lifeline during this crisis. The duty should be on the value of duty foregone on the duty-free inputs used by the SEZ unit in manufacturing jewellery for the DTA,' the exporters said. A system whereby the invitee list is generated afresh every year should be instituted, so that the opportunity is given to a broad set of people. It could be considered that a person gets an invite just once," it said. The home ministry said special attention may be paid to the band at the Governor/LG House and it should play patriotic songs and not simply songs from movies. A system of competition among school bands should be instituted whereby the winners get to perform at the Governor House during the 'At Home' reception. The invitation card for Governor/LG 'At Home' should be created in a way that these are treasured for life as souvenir by the invitees, marking it as a special occasion once in life and if some good innovation has been done by the state the same can be exhibited during the 'At Home' function, the communication said.
