Triathletes from the SAR are vying for four final spots on the six-member squad for November's National Games, according to vice president of the Triathlon Association of Hong Kong, China Wan Shu-wah.
The SAR will host triathlon, with races taking place at the Central Harbourfront and Victoria Harbour.
Speaking to RTHK after an event on Tuesday, Wan said that so far only Asian Games medallists Bailee Brown and Wong Tsz-to have secured places in the SAR squad, which will comprise of three men and three women.
He said the final team selection will be made after the Asia Triathlon Championships in Istanbul in late August.
Wan, who's also a former SAR representative, expressed strong medal hopes for the National Games, saying the team will have the edge competing on home turf.
'The event will take place in the Central and Wan Chai areas. So of course we have advantage, as our athletes can train at the venue more often than the others,' he said.
'For the medal hopes, I think in the men's, women's and mixed team relays we have a chance to challenge the podium. Our main competitors will be Sichuan and Shandong.'
Retired triathlete Daniel Lee secured the SAR's only National Games triathlon medal so far, winning bronze 16 years ago.
Triathlon will be featured at the Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo at the Convention and Exhibition Centre from July 16 to 22.
The event, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, will also showcase emerging sports like e-dodgeball – a virtual reality version of dodgeball – as well as drone soccer – a team sport where players score by flying drones through their opponents' goal hoops.
A tourism area, including an exhibition of 17 Japanese prefectures, will also be featured for the first time.
Visitors can buy a ticket package which also grants them access to the World of Snacks expo and the Hong Kong Book Fair.

Rope skipping body says it complies with flag rule Athletes from Hong Kong, China take part in World Jump Rope Championships in Japan. Photo courtesy of the International Jump Rope Union The Hong Kong Rope Skipping Association, China said on Monday it has strictly followed the guidelines, after reports suggested the SAR regional flag shown at the medal ceremonies of the World Jump Rope Championships in Japan differed from the official design. The rope skipping association said the correct version of the SAR regional flag was given to the organisers earlier. More than 2,600 athletes from 34 countries and regions took part in the tournament recently held in Kawasaki, with representatives from Hong Kong, China winning a number of medals. The Hong Kong Rope Skipping Association, China said it has all along followed strictly the guidelines provided by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department on the use of the regional flag and the national anthem when participating in overseas tournaments. The body added it had followed established procedures for the world championships in Japan by, for example, providing organisers with a file of the correct regional flag that was downloaded from the official government website. The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, for its part, said it contacted the rope skipping association to learn about the case. The bureau also reminded sports organisations that the regional flag displayed at competitions must match the format and specifications stated on the government's webpage, and that they should reference guidelines issued by the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China.

Hong Kong cycling medal hope Ceci Lee shows National Games promise in Australia
Ceci Lee Sze-wing has delivered a timely reminder of her potential to become Hong Kong's National Games poster girl, as the city began its 100-day countdown to co-hosting the showpiece. The cyclist claimed a notable victory in a criterium race on Saturday in Brisbane, where the Hong Kong team are holding a month-long training camp. And on Sunday, Lee, 24, was second behind teammate Chloe Leung Wing-yee in a nip-and-tuck road race. Although Lee is desperately keen to take omnium gold in her hometown in November, she has been busily refining her road skills under endurance coach Ben Kersten. Not that she lacks pedigree for it: in 2021, Lee stunned a high-class field to become Hong Kong's first National Games road race champion at the age of 20. 'I'm learning more about how to find a good position for the final sprint, but also how my teammates can help me do that,' Lee said. 'The best teams form a good chain for a lead-out, and we're working on it a lot for the National Games. The course will be nearly all flat, so it's very likely to be a bunch sprint at the end.' HK waiting for athletes' list in National Games race
HK waiting for athletes' list in National Games race Yeung Tak-keung expects the list of mainland athletes will be confirmed by early next month. File photo: RTHK The Hong Kong official in charge of the coordinating office for the National Games on Monday said it is waiting for the mainland to decide which athletes will be sent to compete in the events that will be staged in the SAR so that it can refine the competition schedule. Hong Kong will co-host its first National Games in November with Guangdong and Macau. Of the 34 sporting events featured in the Games, eight, including basketball, fencing and golf, will be held here. With less than 100 days to go, Yeung Tak-keung told an RTHK radio programme that his office will fine-tune its preparations. "The mainland has to hold trial or qualifying competitions to determine the list of teams and athletes who will come to Hong Kong to compete," he said. "Once there is a list, groupings will be carried out, and then the competition schedule will be refined, for example, to decide when to carry out the preliminary rounds, which teams will play against each other, etc. "These details are very important for us in organising the competitions." He expects the list will be ready by early next month. By then, Yeung said, his office can arrange accommodation and transport for the athletes. He also said that tens of thousands of volunteers will be assigned to carry out on-site trainings in the next three months. Yeung added final testing for ticket sales is under way and that an announcement will be made "very soon".
