Research Officer Loses RM600K in Fake Share Investment Scam
KUANTAN: A research officer lost more than RM600,000 after falling victim to a bogus share investment scheme.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 57-year-old woman was first lured into the scheme after being added to a WhatsApp group on March 21.
She made an initial investment of RM14,000 and managed to withdraw a RM1,000 return, which gave her the confidence to continue investing.
'Between April 23 and June 4, she made 28 transactions amounting to over RM600,000 to three different bank accounts using her savings,' he said in a statement today.
The victim grew suspicious when she attempted to withdraw RM50,000, only to be told she needed to pay RM200,000 in service charges.
Realising she had been scammed, she lodged a police report at the Rompin police headquarters yesterday.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

SIBU: A Chinese national has been sentenced to five years' jail for causing the death of Sabah State Courts director Marutin Pagan, 56, in an accident. Sessions Court judge Rosli Ahmad ordered on Tuesday (June 10) that Sun Xue Song, 42, was to serve the prison term from March 30, the date of his arrest. He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by dangerous or reckless driving, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. Sun's counsel Terrence Tiong said in mitigation that his client was a first-time offender with no previous convictions in Malaysia or his home country. Tiong said the accused had also taken steps to help the victim's family. "Despite his limited financial means, he made a bereavement payment to the deceased's wife, not in the hope of leniency or forgiveness, but out of compassion and a sense of moral duty," he said. He contended that a long custodial sentence would also hurt Sun's innocent dependents, including his mother, 79, and his seven-year-old son, who is still in primary school and would be left without a means of support or a caregiver. DPP Cynthia Emmelda Jerry urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as the accused had caused emotional trauma to the victim's family. She also said public interest had to be taken into consideration.

Jobless man charged with wife's murder, sent for psychiatric evaluation
TANGKAK: A jobless man who allegedly slit his wife's throat with a vegetable knife following a heated argument was charged with murder at the magistrate's Court here today. Mohamad Khairul Azmi Ithnin, 32, nodded to indicate he understood the charge when it was read before magistrate Lee Kim Keat. No plea was recorded, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. He is accused of murdering his wife, Iecah Junus, 34, at their home in Taman Cahaya, Serom, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm on June 2. Khairul Azmi was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Amirah Sapian appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented. The prosecution also applied for Khairul to be referred to Hospital Permai in Johor Baru for psychiatric evaluation under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The court allowed the application and denied bail. The case has been fixed for mention on July 8 to allow time for the completion of the pathology and DNA reports. Earlier, the accused's parents and siblings were seen in court as the charge was read out. Investigations revealed the incident was triggered by a verbal dispute over past issues. The accused had allegedly attacked his wife , a clerk at a palm oil collection centre, using a kitchen knife, fatally slashing her neck. He then drove about 40km to his mother-in-law's house in Kampung Durian Chondong, where he set several vehicles on fire and attempted to torch the house. The arson attempt was foiled when a family member raised the alarm. The murder only came to light when the accused called his brother-in-law to take him to the police station, where he allegedly confessed. Police later discovered the victim's body wrapped in a thick blanket at their home, along with a bloodstained knife. Police confirmed the accused had a prior conviction for mischief under Section 427 in 2017, for which he was fined RM1,800.

MARA education foundation provides RM1,000 aid to UPSI crash victims' families
IPOH: The MARA Education Foundation (YPM) has disbursed immediate cash assistance of RM1,000 to the next of kin of each Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student involved in the bus crash on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early Monday morning. MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the aid aimed to ease the burden on the victims' families, most of whom came from modest or underprivileged backgrounds. 'Today, I had the opportunity to represent Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in visiting the victims of the bus crash involving UPSI students at the JRTB and in handing over the assistance. 'So we hope this immediate RM1,000 contribution can help reduce the burden of the families who came today to visit the victims of this truly heartbreaking tragedy,' he said in a Facebook post today. In the incident that occurred at about 1.10 am on the JRTB near Tasik Banding, Gerik, 15 UPSI students were killed in a crash involving a tour bus and a Perodua Alza. The bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was en route from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak.
