‘Entire village ganged up to finish a family': Police arrest three of 23 named in FIR for Bihar ‘witchcraft' murders
Those killed were identified as daily wager Babulal Oraon (65), his wife Sita Devi (60) who was suspected of practising the witchcraft, their son Manjeet Kunar (25) and daughter-in-law Rani Devi (22) and Babulal's mother Kato Devi (82).
The incident took place in Tetgama village under Mufassil police station, barely 15 km from Purnia town. The village is dominated by Oraon and other tribal community families.
Police have arrested fellow-villagers Mukul Oraon, Chhotu Oraon and Sanaullah from among the 23 named in the FIR, which also mentions a mob of around 150 unidentified people. 'At least five children have died in the last one-and-half years and the villagers suspected it was due to the witchcraft practised by Sita Devi,' said a villager on condition of anonymity. The village looks deserted as almost all inhabitants have fled since the crime came to the fore.
Narrating the incident, Babulal's brother Jitendra Oraon said: 'In a village of 21 tribal families, members of 18 families targeted three of ours with blunt objects. After the assault, they torched our houses. While we escaped, Babulal's entire family minus a boy got trapped in the fire and died.' He said people from neighbouring settlements did not come to their rescue.
Another villager alleged how Sanaullah, who lives near the village, had 'provided his tractor to other accused to remove bodies of the victims from the spot for Rs 40,000'.
Raghunath Oraon of neighbouring Dargah Tola of Raziganj panchayat said: 'By the time neighbouring villagers came to know about the incident, all bodies had been removed.' The police on Monday recovered bodies from a field 2 km from the village.
Purnia District Magistrate Anshul Kumar, who reached the spot on Tuesday, said: 'This incident is the result of superstition among the people. This shows that we need to work on the lack of literacy and awareness in these tribal pockets.'
Purnia Sadar Sub-Division Police Officer Pankaj Kumar Sharma said: 'Our investigation so far has revealed that the incident was triggered by a dispute over traditional healing practices or alleged witchcraft. The family of Babulal Oraon, who practiced such rituals, is believed to have been targeted after a child from Ramdev Oraon's family died three days ago and another fell ill. It seems this may have led to the attack.'

People lose Rs 20,000 crore per year in online gaming: Data
Representative image NEW DELHI: Much against the arguments put forth by gaming companies against the ban on real-money gaming, the government estimates that around 45 crore people lose close to Rs 20,000 crore every year in online real-money gaming, according to data provided by an official source on Wednesday. The source said the government believes that online real-money gaming is turning into a "major problem for society," and decided to prioritise people's welfare over the revenue loss it will suffer on account of the ban. "There is a rough estimate that 45 crore people lose money every year. Total impact of the loss is estimated to be around Rs 20,000 crore," the source said, on a day when the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 was tabled and passed in the Lok Sabha. "Every parliamentarian has raised concerns about the ill effects of online gaming involving money. Between revenue from one-third of the industry segment and social welfare, the government has chosen welfare of society," the source said. The bill proposes to promote e-sports and online social gaming while banning money gaming in any form. "There will be a budget for it, and schemes and authority for their promotion. They comprise two-thirds of the industry. It will create job opportunities for the online gaming industry," the source said. Action under the bill against entities involved in money gaming will be taken mainly by state govts. Any person offering an online money gaming service in violation of stipulated provisions will face imprisonment of up to three years or a fine that may extend to Rs 1 crore, or both. The provisions also stipulate imprisonment of up to two years and/or a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh, or both, for those putting out advertisements in contravention of rules. Several online real-money gaming platforms "masquerade as game of skills" entities to differentiate themselves from gambling or betting, the source said. "Those who play the games are victims. They will not be punished as per the bill, but there will be action against those who provide real-money gaming platforms, facilitate transaction services, etc," the source said. The government has been making efforts for the last three-and-a-half years, which were being bypassed by the real-money gaming players. "Government tried to check it through GST, but it was being bypassed. There was a proposal for a regulatory body, but that was impacted by a conflict of interest. The provisions under the bill were drafted after several complaints were received from the public and their representatives," the source said.

Job scam: Court asks mantri to surrender on Sept 12
Kolkata: A special PMLA court on Wednesday directed state minister Chandranath Sinha to surrender in court on Sept 12, in connection with the teacher recruitment scam. Charges against the minister are likely to be framed on the same date. It also asked ED to issue a summons to Sinha within the next 15 days. The ED supplementary charge sheet filed against Sinha mentioned two bank accounts in Bolpur belonging to him, and transactions worth around Rs 15 crore. Investigators have reasons to believe that the amount might be linked to the recruitment scam, especially after Sinha's name was found in the diary of another accused, Kuntal Ghosh. ED sources said that an amount was written beside his name. The ED earlier conducted multiple raids at his residence, during which approximately Rs 41 lakh was seized.
