Woman arrested for killing husband & portraying it as suicide

Rourkela: The Sundargarh police have arrested a woman for allegedly murdering her husband and attempting to portray it as a suicide. The incident, which took place six days ago, involved the assistance of a hearing- and speech-impaired man, who is currently absconding. The deceased, Babulal Lakra (58), was a resident of Turitoli in Dengurapani village under Rajgangpur police station limits. On Aug 9, during Raksha Bandhan, Babulal returned home in an inebriated state and got into a fight with his wife, Singhi, over the preparation of fish curry. The altercation escalated, leading Singhi to strike Babulal with a stick, which caused him to collapse. Believing her husband to be dead, Singhi allegedly enlisted the help of her cousin, Bunda, to hang Babulal from a tree in front of their house. The following morning, Singhi claimed that Babulal had died by suicide. Police, upon receiving information, arrived at the scene, seized the body and sent it for a post-mortem, initially registering the case as an unnatural death. The matter came to light when Babulal's daughter, who had come to attend his shradh ceremony, was informed by Singhi about the actual sequence of events. Subsequently, his daughter lodged an FIR at Rajgangpur police station, accusing her mother and Bunda of murder. Singhi later confessed to the crime during police interrogation. The post-mortem report confirmed that Babulal was alive when was hanged from the tree and he died of suffocation. Consequently, police reclassified the case as murder on Aug 14 and Singhi was arrested on Aug 15. "Efforts are underway to locate and arrest her associate," Bijay Das, inspector in-charge of Rajgangpur police station, said. Woman, along with two sons, jumps into Gomti over dowry harassment

Lucknow: A 27-year-old woman, along with her two young sons, jumped into the Gomti river from Aausaneshwar bridge in Barabanki's Kotwali area following alleged prolonged dowry harassment by her in-laws and second husband, on Wednesday. The bodies of all three were recovered by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) nearly 18 hours later on Thursday evening. The incident occurred around 4 pm on Wednesday. According to police, the woman, identified as Mithilesh Kumari Yadav, reached the bridge carrying her sons Abhay (6) and Ansh (4). She first placed her jewellery and mobile phone, wrapped in a cloth, on the bridge, then threw her elder son into the river. Holding her younger child in her arms, she jumped into the swollen waters. On Thursday, SDRF teams recovered Ansh's body about 10 km downstream near Nainpura ghat, while Mithilesh and Abhay's bodies were found roughly 100 metres from the bridge. Police recovered a suicide note from the spot addressed to the Superintendent of Police. In it, Mithilesh accused her father-in-law Babulal, mother-in-law Kunti Devi, and second husband Bhola of harassing her for dowry and threatening to kill her and her children. ‘Entire village ganged up to finish a family': Police arrest three of 23 named in FIR for Bihar ‘witchcraft' murders

Purnia police, which has so far arrested three people for 'torching to death' five members of a tribal family on Sunday night over suspicion of occultist practices (witchcraft), said on Tuesday that deaths of at least five children in the last one-and-half years and latest one last week could have led to the crime. The police said it was a rare case in which the entire village seemed to have 'ganged up to kill' two men and three women of a family that they believed did black magic. Those killed were identified as daily wager Babulal Oraon (65), his wife Sita Devi (60) who was suspected of practising the witchcraft, their son Manjeet Kunar (25) and daughter-in-law Rani Devi (22) and Babulal's mother Kato Devi (82). The incident took place in Tetgama village under Mufassil police station, barely 15 km from Purnia town. The village is dominated by Oraon and other tribal community families. Police have arrested fellow-villagers Mukul Oraon, Chhotu Oraon and Sanaullah from among the 23 named in the FIR, which also mentions a mob of around 150 unidentified people. 'At least five children have died in the last one-and-half years and the villagers suspected it was due to the witchcraft practised by Sita Devi,' said a villager on condition of anonymity. The village looks deserted as almost all inhabitants have fled since the crime came to the fore. Narrating the incident, Babulal's brother Jitendra Oraon said: 'In a village of 21 tribal families, members of 18 families targeted three of ours with blunt objects. After the assault, they torched our houses. While we escaped, Babulal's entire family minus a boy got trapped in the fire and died.' He said people from neighbouring settlements did not come to their rescue. Another villager alleged how Sanaullah, who lives near the village, had 'provided his tractor to other accused to remove bodies of the victims from the spot for Rs 40,000'. Raghunath Oraon of neighbouring Dargah Tola of Raziganj panchayat said: 'By the time neighbouring villagers came to know about the incident, all bodies had been removed.' The police on Monday recovered bodies from a field 2 km from the village. Purnia District Magistrate Anshul Kumar, who reached the spot on Tuesday, said: 'This incident is the result of superstition among the people. This shows that we need to work on the lack of literacy and awareness in these tribal pockets.' Purnia Sadar Sub-Division Police Officer Pankaj Kumar Sharma said: 'Our investigation so far has revealed that the incident was triggered by a dispute over traditional healing practices or alleged witchcraft. The family of Babulal Oraon, who practiced such rituals, is believed to have been targeted after a child from Ramdev Oraon's family died three days ago and another fell ill. It seems this may have led to the attack.' Santosh Singh is a Senior Assistant Editor with The Indian Express since June 2008. He covers Bihar with main focus on politics, society and governance. Ahmedabad: Video of man beating elephant sparks outrage; forest dept starts inquiry

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat forest department started an inquiry on Saturday after a video of a man repeatedly beating a female elephant in Ahmedabad was widely shared on social media platforms, including X. The 43-second footage of the person, reportedly a mahout (handler), striking the elephant around 19 times with a stick has sparked widespread outrage (Video grab) The 43-second footage of the person, reportedly a mahout (handler), striking the elephant around 19 times with a stick has sparked widespread outrage among citizens, including animal welfare advocates. The forest department has begun an inquiry into the alleged animal abuse case, an official said. This incident comes two days after a single male elephant, Babulal—startled by loud DJ music and shrill noises—ran amok near Desai ni Pol in Khadia, causing panic during the 148th Jagannath Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad on Friday. With 17 elephants, 101 trucks, 30 akhadas, 18 bhajan groups, and three bands, the annual procession—drawing thousands to pull the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple in Jamalpur along a 16-kilometer route—began around 7 am and was proceeding smoothly until 10.15 am, when the elephant bolted, scattering devotees. Two people, including a woman police officer, were injured while trying to flee. Police, mahouts, and forest staff tranquilized the elephant within 15 minutes and removed it, along with two female elephants, Janaki and Rani, who also showed signs of distress during the procession. The remaining 14 elephants continued the 16km journey. An official, requesting anonymity, said that the person seen beating the elephant in the recent video was present at the Rathyatra procession on June 27 alongside the elephants. 'We have initiated an inquiry to verify the authenticity of the video, which began circulating on the evening of June 27. The person beating the female elephant appears to be a mahout, though we are confirming this. During the Yatra, the female elephants gave a distress call, prompting Babulal to respond due to their strong bond. The elephants were disturbed by loud music, whistles, or colorful balloons. These three elephants are relatively new to large public events. In the footage, Babulal appears to be trying to escape, with the female elephants showing similar discomfort,' chief conservator of forests in Ahmedabad K. Ramesh said. Condemning the cruelty captured in the video and calling for systemic change, animal activists have raised concerns about the welfare of captive elephants. Many suspect that the harsh conditions during the Yatra—30°C temperatures, tar-covered roads, heavy decorations, and loud sounds—may have caused stress among the elephants, potentially triggering the handler's mistreatment. The elephant is listed as a Schedule I animal under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which grants it the highest level of legal protection. Any harm caused to it is a serious offence, punishable with 3 to 7 years of imprisonment and a minimum fine of ₹ 25,000, a forest official said.
