These vegetables have a natural compound that could lead to new plaque-destroying toothpastes

Scientists have identified a compound found in cruciferous vegetables that can wipe out over 90 per cent of the sticky film behind dental plaque, an advance that may lead to new kinds of toothpaste and mouthwash.
Dental caries is a global problem with over 60 per cent of school-aged children in low and middle-income countries estimated to have the health issue.
It arises as the community of microbes coating the tooth surface shifts to include more bacteria with characteristics of high acid production due to increased carbohydrate intake.
Among such bacteria, S mutans is the most prominent due to its durability in a high sugar and low pH environment.
Currently, toothpaste, mouthwash, and routine dental visits help, but researchers are on the lookout for better solutions from naturally derived compounds.
Researchers, including those from the National University of Singapore, have found that a compound called 3,3′-Diindolylmethane (DIM) – also known as bisindole – can cut down the biofilms behind plaque and cavities by 90 per cent.
DIM is a compound that is also naturally formed in the body when digesting cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and kale.
The new study showed that DIM specifically targets the bacterium S. mutans, a key contributor to tooth decay, which thrives and forms sticky films in the warm, sugary conditions inside the mouth.
Scientists found that at even a very low concentration, DIM inhibited biofilm formation by 92 per cent, reduced bacterial production of the glue that sticks them to surfaces, and also decreased the biofilm's durability.
Earlier studies have shown that DIM has anti-cancer properties with low toxicity toward normal cells, making it a potentially safe candidate for application in the mouth.
Previous research has shown that S mutans biofilms lead to plaque buildup, enamel erosion and dental cavities.
The latest study found that DIM, which is known to also have anti-cancer effects, drastically disrupts the biofilm by preventing the bacteria from multiplying.
While the results are far from establishing DIM as a practical dental treatment, scientists say the findings are encouraging.
'The molecule, which was found to have low toxicity, could be added to toothpastes and mouthwashes to greatly improve dental hygiene,' said Ariel Kushmaro, one of the authors of the study.
'The anti-biofilm and anti-virulence properties of DIM against S. mutans bacteria in an 'oral setting' provide evidence for its usefulness in reducing biofilm formation and potentially for caries attenuation,' scientists wrote.

About 5% of common Australian wild birds including kookaburras and lorikeets could have undergone a 'sex reversal' where their genetic sex does not match their reproductive organs, according to a new study. The study is thought to be the first to find widespread sex reversal across multiple wild bird species, but the cause of the phenomenon is not yet known. The results suggest sex reversal is more common in wild birds than previously thought, and have raised concerns about the potential impact of chemicals that can disrupt hormones in animals. Researchers tested 480 birds across five common species that had died after being admitted to wildlife hospitals in south-east Queensland. Researchers first used a DNA test to determine a bird's genetic sex; in birds, males have a pair of Z chromosomes and females have one Z and one W. But after dissecting the birds, they found a mismatch between the DNA test and the reproductive organs of 24 of the birds. 'I was thinking, is this right?' she said. 'So we rechecked, and rechecked and rechecked. And then we were thinking, 'Oh my God'.' Potvin said she had revealed the results to ornithologist friends. 'They were mind-blown,' she said. Almost all of the 'sex discordant' birds were genetically female but had male reproductive organs, found the research, published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters. In one case, a kookaburra that was genetically male had a stretched oviduct – the passageway for an egg – that suggested 'recent egg production', Potvin said. Two genetically female crested pigeons had both testicular and ovarian reproductive structures, the research found. Other birds tested were rainbow lorikeets, scaly-breasted lorikeets and Australian magpies. The lowest levels of sex reversal was 3%, found in Australian magpies, and the highest was 6.3% in crested pigeons. Dr Clancy Hall, the lead author of the research, also at the University of the Sunshine Coast, said sex-reversed birds could affect reproductive success that should raise concerns about the impact on threatened species. She said: 'This can lead to skewed sex ratios, reduced population sizes, altered mate preferences, and even population decline. 'The ability to unequivocally identify the sex and reproductive status of individuals is crucial across many fields of study.' The causes of the sex reversals were unclear, but one factor could be contact with chemicals in the environment. Prof Kate Buchanan, who studies the evolutionary biology of wild birds at Deakin University but was not involved in the study, said because the default sex of birds was female, it was not surprising that most of the sex reversal affects were in the direction of female to male. She said: 'The most likely explanation of the masculinisation is some environmental stimulation, probably anthropogenic chemicals.' Buchanan has been part of research that has found EDCs in insects that develop in sewage treatment works and are food for some birds, as well as a study that found male European starlings exposed to the chemicals developed longer and more complex songs, but had a damaged immune system. She said even if the masculinisation of affected birds was reversible in their lifetime, 'it would probably knock them out of being reproductive'. Dr Clare Holleley is the head of vertebrate collections at the Australian government science agency the CSIRO and has studied sex reversal in lizards. 'What's doing this is now the big question,' she said. While a cause could be natural (for example, sex reversal in lizards can be triggered by temperature changes), Holleley said it was likely 'something else is going on'. 'If sex determination gets disrupted then something has to push you off track. The most likely [cause] is endocrine-disrupting chemicals.' Dr Golo Maurer, the director of conservation strategy at BirdLife Australia, said the research was likely to cause a stir in the ornithological field. He said the presence of EDCs and the potential impacts was a 'huge concern' given the other crises facing birds, from climate change to habitat clearance and plastic pollution. Some experts were cautious about extrapolating the results to the wider population of wild birds, because the birds were not a random sample but had been admitted to hospitals.

The 18 million Americans who use cannabis daily have drastically increased their odds of developing schizophrenia, a serious mental disorder that can lead to death. The grim findings come from a new report by the Canadian Medical Association Journal which revealed that patients needing hospitalization because of cannabis-related health problems were 14 times more likely to develop schizophrenia within three years. These symptoms could range from severe psychiatric symptoms such as paranoia or panic attacks to overdosing on THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis that gives users its signature 'high' feeling. Researchers found that the risk for schizophrenia was a staggering 241 times higher among people needing hospitalization for cannabis-induced psychosis. This temporary mental health condition triggered by cannabis use causes hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. The report found that the main cause of this major health risk was the significant rise in the levels of THC within cannabis, which has gone from just four percent 20 years ago to 20 percent today. Dr Nicholas Fabiano from the University of Ottawa said: 'Cannabis from the 2000s is not the same as in 2025.' While schizophrenia itself is not a fatal condition, it can lead to life-threatening situations as these patients have a higher risk of dying by suicide due to severe symptoms such as depression. The new report from CMAJ pooled the results from five separate studies on cannabis use in Canada. These studies included data gathered from a large population-based study in Ontario involving 9.8 million people. That specific dataset helped researchers find the growing connection between cannabis-induced health issues and schizophrenia. Study authors warned that the higher potency of cannabis today showed a direct link to psychosis risk, especially among younger users, men, and those with a history of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Overall, the report revealed that about 0.47 percent of cannabis users end up experiencing symptoms of psychosis. That's roughly one in every 200 users. However, up to 76 percent of those who do experience these symptoms for more than 24 hours end up needing emergency care - sending their chances of developing schizophrenia skyrocketing. Schizophrenia is treated with a combination of antipsychotic medications, therapy, and support. Antipsychotic drugs, like risperidone and olanzapine can help manage symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions by balancing brain chemicals. Therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), can help patients cope with symptoms and improve their daily functioning. As for regular cannabis users who haven't developed mental health problems, study authors said there is one definitive way to reduce their risk: stop using cannabis. Moreover, the report warned that continuing to use cannabis after an initial episode of psychosis led to an increased risk that the symptoms would return. Using cannabis, especially high-potency products with more than 20 percent THC, can cause some people to experience severe nausea and vomiting. Rapid heart rate, chest pains that mimic a heart attack, or fainting can also occur and require an urgent trip to the hospital. Overdosing on THC, particularly from consuming edibles or using vapes, can lead to extreme confusion, agitation, or a loss of coordination, all of which can increase the risk of a serious accident. Among users with pre-existing mental health conditions, cannabis-related health problems can include worsening symptoms of anxiety or depression, such as severe mood swings or suicidal thoughts. Cannabis' status in the US has been complex for years, with recreational use legal in 24 states and Washington DC, and medical use allowed in 38 states as of 2025. However, it remains a Schedule I drug federally, classified as highly dangerous with no accepted medical use. The Biden administration proposed moving cannabis to Schedule III in May 2024, recognizing its potential as a medical treatment, but a January 2025 hearing was canceled, leaving the decision to the Trump administration.

Climate change made the recent 'relentless' heatwave in Norway Sweden and Finland about 2C hotter and at least 10 times more likely, scientists have said. Researchers from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) network, which assesses the role of climate change in extreme weather, said the two weeks of unusually hot weather from mid-July, with temperatures above 30C, would be 'extremely rare' without human-caused global warming. The extreme weather for the region, which came at the peak Nordic holiday season, led to heat-related deaths, overcrowded hospitals, an increase in drownings, wildfires, algal blooms on coastlines and sightings of reindeer straying into towns seeking shade and water. The latest results show how burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, which release heat-trapping gases that drive global warming, are causing more extreme heatwaves. They come as southern Europe is hit by record scorching temperatures, soaring past 40C and causing widespread wildfires. And in the UK, parts of the country are under an 'amber heat health alert' in the fourth heatwave of the summer as temperatures climb into the 30s this week. Researchers looking at the Nordic heatwave, which in Finland led to a record-breaking 22 consecutive days above 30C, found that in a world without climate change, a similar two-week period of extreme heat would be extremely rare. But today, with 1.3C of warming caused by humans burning fossil fuels, such a heatwave is at least 10 times more likely and would now be expected about every 50 years. Climate change also made the event about 2C hotter, the rapid attribution study found. As the climate warms, Norway, Sweden and Finland will face more dangerous heatwaves, and if warming reaches 2.6C above pre-industrial levels by 2100 as projected, without more rapid action to halt fossil fuel use, they will become five times more likely and another 1.4C hotter than today. The scientists also said that the 0.2C in global warming since a similar two-week heatwave in the region in 2018 has made such an event twice as likely – showing how small increases in warming expose people to more frequent dangerous heat events. Dr Clair Barnes, researcher at the Centre for Environmental Policy Imperial College London, and one of the WWA team, said: 'This heatwave was relentless. 'Two weeks of temperatures above 30C in this region is unusual and of course, highly concerning. 'Climate change is fundamentally reshaping the world we live in. 'Cold-climate countries like Norway, Sweden and Finland are now experiencing unfamiliar levels of heat, as recently seen in strained health systems and sightings of reindeer seeking shade in urban areas. 'We found that the likelihood of a prolonged period of heat like this has almost doubled since 2018, when the region last experienced such an intense heatwave – and this trend is going to continue if we don't stop filling the atmosphere with planet-heating gasses. 'A rapid transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy is the only way to slow and, hopefully, ultimately stop this warming.' Prof Friederike Otto, professor in climate science at the Centre for Environmental Policy Imperial College London, said: 'Even comparably cold Scandinavian countries are facing dangerous heatwaves today with 1.3C of warming. 'This event should be taken as another reminder that no country is safe from climate change.' She pointed to sweltering temperatures that have hit the US, Japan and South Korea in recent weeks, and triggered huge wildfires in France and Turkey, saying 'burning oil, gas and coal is killing people today'. In the UK, experts also warn that homes, hospitals, workplaces and schools are not prepared for the impact of increasingly dangerous heat.
