Bhopal road caves in, leaves 10 ft-deep pit
MP Nagar that witnesses one of the heaviest traffic densities and connects New Bhopal and BHEL township and parts of Old City caved in leaving a pit approximately 8-10 feet wide. Luckily no pedestrians or vehicles were on the spot at the time.
The damaged section is part of the main road connecting the Board Office to MP Nagar Zone-I. After the incident, traffic was disrupted, and congestion built up in nearby areas.
Officials reached the site and directed that the area be barricaded.
They stated that the collapse likely occurred due to soil erosion caused by an old underground drain. The road was originally under the Capital Project Administration and has been maintained by PWD Division No. 2 since 2002. Repair work began later in the day. Traffic police were deployed to manage movement and prevent further disruption.
The incident however led to political protests. Congress state spokesperson Abhinav Barolia staged a dharna at the site, alleging poor construction and corruption in the Public Works Department (PWD).

He claimed he was nearby when the road collapsed and that the incident could have caused a serious accident if any vehicle had been present.
Barolia targeted PWD minister Rakesh Singh, referring to his earlier statement that potholes are common. He demanded an investigation and action against those responsible. Other Congress leaders also protested at the site by stepping into the pit and demanding accountability from officials.
They alleged that road damage is widespread in the city and called for a probe into the condition of roads and construction quality.
State Congress President Jeetu Patwari posted a video of the collapsed road on social media platform X, targeting the government and highlighting the incident as an example of poor infrastructure and mismanagement.
Potholed road turns selfie point
Times News Network
Bhopal: The portion of road that caved in on Thursday afternoon has turned into a selfie and reel point with passers by stopping to click pictures or make a video to post on social media.
Soon the social media was full of videos about the road, and comments from people.
While people made reels and shared them on social media, the Opposition Congress took pot shots at the state govt and especially the PWD minister Rakesh Singh.
Sub-divisional magistrate L K Khare, who visited the spot, stated, "Every road is different and here, the footpath is old and a sewage line runs under the road. Since the road has a slope, rainwater runs down from above and if there is heavy rainfall, the area gets temporarily waterlogged.
The road will be repaired today, he asserted. New pipes have already been brought, and the repair work will start soon." he said.
Congress workers led by Manoj Shukla reached the spot and garlanded the pit offering tributes to it. Shukla with his supporters also staged a sit-in inside the pit.
Talking to media persons, Shukla, said, "MP Nagar is the commercial hub of the state capital and if this is the situation here, that in other parts of the city and state could be well imagined.
The govt is neck-deep in corruption and we will work together to expose it."
Shopkeepers from the area also came to check on the road. When asked how it happened, one of them said "We were not here when it happened. Luckily there was no loss of life or property as nobody was around at that time. The portion of road remains water-logged even at the slightest rain."

Voter Adhikar Yatra: Rahul Gandhi to hit the streets again, this time over Bihar ‘SIR'
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi hit the roads in Bihar for a 13-day yatra against alleged vote theft and the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voter list carried out by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the poll-bound state. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during a protest march in New Delhi on August 11. (PTI) Announced the schedule of Gandhi's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra', Congress general secretary (organization) KC Venugopal said, 'To save our vote, our Constitution, our democracy, Rahul Gandhi, former deputy chief minister of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav and other Mahagadbandhan leaders will embark on the Voter Adhikar Yatra across Bihar.' 'The yatra will kick off with a mega launch rally in Sasaram on August 17, going through Gaya, Munger, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Purnia, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Pashchim Champaran, and ending in Arrah on August 30,' Venugopal said. The proposed 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' will be focused on the Opposition's ongoing tirade against the ECI. 'Those who have conspired to steal our vote and destroy our hard-fought democratic system will be punished by the people. We will always fight to ensure that power stays with the ordinary people and is not snatched by those working for divisive forces, cronies, and the powerful,' Venugopal said. Late on Thursday, the Congress will organise a 'Save Democracy Torch Procession' in all district headquarters across the country. On September 1, the Opposition will hold a 'Mega Voter Adhikar Rally' at Patna's Gandhi Maidan 'where the whole of Bihar will send a clear message to drive away the Vote Chors (thieves)', Venugopal said. This will be Gandhi's second yatra in as many years after he took out Phase 2 of the Bharat Jodo Yatra in February 2024, which saw the Congress revive its organisation, and in some parts of the country, and also translated in some electoral gains during last year's general elections. Among other planned events, the party will take out rallies with the theme 'Vote Thief-Leave the Throne' in all state headquarters from August 22 to September 7. From September 15 to October 15, a 'signature campaign' will be conducted across the country to protect the right to vote. On August 7, Gandhi produced data of alleged dubious voters in Mahadevapura segment of Bangalore (Central) Lok Sabha constituency and claimed that 1,00,250 lakh 'stolen' votes helped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) win the seat in 2024, as the Wayanad MP accused the ECI of 'colluding' with the BJP. Gandhi claimed that in Mahadevapura, there were 11,965 duplicate voters, 40,009 voters with fake and invalid addresses, 10,452 bulk voters who had a single address and 4,132 voters with invalid photos.

US wants deeper Pakistan trade ties: Trump administration eyes critical minerals, hydrocarbons; move after ‘massive oil reserves' pitch
The US government has expressed its eagerness to enhance collaboration with Pakistan. US President Donald Trump's government is looking to deepen its economic ties with Pakistan at a time when trade deal talks with India remain stalled. The US government has expressed its eagerness to enhance collaboration with Pakistan in the fields of critical minerals and hydrocarbons, with a renewed emphasis on economic cooperation in other emerging sectors. This announcement was made in a congratulatory message for Pakistan's Independence Day. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the significance of ongoing partnership between the two countries. "On behalf of the United States, I extend our warm congratulations to the people of Pakistan as they celebrate their Independence Day on August 14," Rubio said in a release from the US Department of State, according to an ANI report. This message is issued as Washington aims to strengthen its relationship with India's neighboring country. Trump's 'massive oil reserves' in Pakistan dreams In July, Trump revealed a trade agreement with Pakistan, highlighting a joint effort to develop the country's oil reserves and suggesting that "someday" Islamabad might sell oil to New Delhi. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ukraine: Unsold Sofas at Bargain Prices (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo In a Truth Social post, Trump mentioned that the United States and Pakistan are in the process of selecting an oil company for their partnership. We are currently choosing the oil company to lead this partnership. Perhaps, in the future, they might sell oil to India!" Trump's claim about helping Pakistan develop large oil reserves for potential exports to India seems overly optimistic. A TOI report indicates that Pakistan holds only 0.02% of the world's crude oil reserves. Pakistan produces about 70,000 barrels of oil daily, which is less than 10% of India's production. Instead of being seen as a future energy exporter, Pakistan's current role in the global oil market is quite minor. A Reuters report states that Pakistan's proven crude oil reserves range from 234 million to 353 million barrels, ranking it 50th in the world for crude oil reserves. Conversely, India faced a 25 percent tariff under the new plan. Furthermore, Trump announced an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, raising the total to 50 percent, due to India's ongoing oil purchases from Russia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has criticized the US's decision to impose additional tariffs, describing it as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable." The MEA also stated that New Delhi would take "all necessary actions to safeguard its national interests." Germany: 1,300 Syrians return home since fall of Assad
. Some 1,337 Syrians living in Germany have gone back to Syria voluntarily since President Bashar Assad was deposed in December last year, the German Interior Ministry said on Wednesday. The data was collected until the end of July. More than 1 million Syrians, many of whom fled their homeland during the bloody civil war, live in Germany. The announcement came as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz — who has made reducing immigration and increasing deportations a main focus of his government — marked his first 100 days in office. Germany encourages Syrians to return to their home country The German government suspended processing asylum applications for Syrians, except in certain individual cases, in December. Other applications have been put on ice while the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) continues to assess what was a "very volatile" security situation in Syria, a spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry said. At the same time, the German government has been encouraging Syrians to leave Germany of their own free will. In April, the Interior Ministry said it would allow Syrian refugees to visit their home country for short periods without fear of losing their protected status. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn 57+ Languages Easily with AI [Join] Talkpal AI Sign Up Undo A ministry spokesperson said that the aim was to enable Syrians to make the decision to return to Syria voluntarily. "To do this, people from Syria must be able to see for themselves — for example, whether [their] houses are still standing, whether their relatives are still alive and so on," they said in April. German interior minister pushing for deportations Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, however, is continuing to work toward the deportation of Syrians, his ministry said. As with the recent renewed deportation of people to Afghanistan, the ministry said it would start by targeting convicted criminals. However, the coalition government is also considering compelling people from Syria to return to their home country due to the change in the situation there. "We are working on organizing additional deportation flights to Afghanistan and also to Syria," Dobrindt said last week. The push for deportations to Afghanistan and Syria has come under fire due to the continued precariousness of the security situation in those countries.
