Lawyer Daughter Challenges Ex-IG Father's Order Sacking UP Cop, Gets It Overturned

Last Updated: Retired IPS officer Rakesh Singh faced his daughter, advocate Anura Singh, in Allahabad High Court. Anura argued procedural flaws, leading to a constable's reinstatement. In a striking instance of professional integrity taking precedence over personal ties, a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer found himself on the opposite side of the courtroom—facing his own daughter in a legal battle in the Allahabad High Court. The case pertains to the retired top cop's suspension order for a constable, which was challenged by his advocate daughter, who appeared as counsel for the suspended constable, and finally got the order overturned, PTI reported. What's The Case? Rakesh Singh, a 2003-batch IPS officer and former Inspector General (IG) of Bareilly Range, had ordered the dismissal of constable Taufiq Ahmad after a girl accused him of molestation in Jaunray 2023. A POCSO case was filed against Ahmad. While the lower court later acquitted him, the police department dismissed him from service. The then IG Rakesh Singh had taken a 'strict but duty-bound" decision to remove Ahmad from service, citing the severity of the charges. He had also rejected Ahmad's appeal against the dismissal Challenging this, Ahmad approached the Allahabad High Court, appointing advocate Anura Singh, Rakesh Singh's daughter, as his lawyer, the report added. In the court, she argued in the suspended constable's favour and said that the departmental inquiry violated the Uttar Pradesh Police Subordinate Ranks (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1991. She further said that the inquiry and dismissal order were flawed and did not comply with legal requirements. Meanwhile, her father — the officer who had signed the dismissal order — was summoned to defend the department's action. On one side stood the seasoned former IG, who defended the police department's decision. On the other hand, his determined daughter highlighted procedural flaws and legal violations in the inquiry process. The High Court eventually quashed the departmental proceedings and ordered Bareilly Police to reinstate Ahmad. 'This writ petition thus, succeeds and is allowed. The inquiry report dated 14.04.2023 and order of the disciplinary authority dated 11.12.2023 are hereby quashed," the judgment dated July 31, 2025, said, as reported by the news agency. 'This was simply about doing our respective jobs," Anura said, adding that the authority of the court stands above all personal equations. Rakesh Singh said he was proud his daughter upheld her professional role, while Ahmad expressed gratitude, saying he was unaware of the personal connection during the case. view comments First Published: August 10, 2025, 17:06 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. U.P. cop reinstated by High Court after ex-IG's daughter argues case against father's order

In a striking instance of professional integrity taking precedence over personal ties, the Allahabad High Court has reinstated a police constable dismissed by then Bareilly Range Inspector General Rakesh Singh (now retired), after the constable's appeal was argued by Mr. Singh's daughter, advocate Anura Singh. Constable Taufiq Ahmad was dismissed on January 13, 2023, following departmental proceedings over allegedly sexually assaulting a woman passenger and offences under the POCSO Act, lodged at the GRP police station. He was also sent to jail in connection with the case. Mr. Rakesh Singh had taken a "strict but duty-bound" decision to remove him from service, citing the severity of the charges. Mr. Ahmad challenged the dismissal in the High Court, where Mr. Anura Singh argued that the inquiry violated the Uttar Pradesh Police Subordinate Ranks (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1991. She contended that the inquiry officer had not only found the charges proved but also recommended punishment — a power reserved solely for the disciplinary authority. Justice Ajit Kumar agreed with the argument, quashed the inquiry report and the dismissal order, and directed Mr. Ahmad's reinstatement with a fresh inquiry to be completed within three months. "This was simply about doing our respective jobs," Mr. Anura said on Sunday (August 10, 2025), adding that the authority of the court stands above all personal equations. Mr. Rakesh Singh said he was proud his daughter upheld her professional role, while Mr. Ahmad expressed gratitude, saying he was unaware of the personal connection during the case.

Lawyer challenges her ex-IPS father's order dismissing UP cop, gets it overturned

In a rare courtroom face-off, a retired IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh found himself defending a police dismissal order — only to see it overturned by his own daughter, who appeared as counsel for the suspended case involved former Bareilly Range Inspector General (IG) Rakesh Singh and his lawyer daughter, Anura Singh. In January 2023, a 17-year-old girl travelling on the Triveni Express accused constable Taufiq Ahmad of molestation. A Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) case was filed on the complaint of the girl's father. While the lower court later acquitted Ahmad, the police department dismissed him from appeal against the dismissal was rejected by then Bareilly Range IG Rakesh Singh. Challenging this, Ahmad approached the Allahabad High Court, appointing advocate Anura Singh as his lawyer. In court, Anura argued that the departmental inquiry and dismissal order were flawed and did not comply with legal requirements. During proceedings, her father — the officer who had signed the dismissal order — was summoned to defend the department's action. While Rakesh Singh maintained that the departmental decision was justified, Anura highlighted procedural lapses and alleged injustice to her Allahabad High Court eventually quashed the departmental proceedings and ordered Bareilly Police to reinstate judgment, delivered in July this year, marked a professional win for Anura and a legal defeat for her father. Speaking after the verdict, Rakesh Singh said he was proud of his daughter for performing her duty as a lawyer. "I presented my case, she presented hers. For any father, this is a moment of pride," he said. - EndsMust Watch

Plantation drive, roadside reservoirs: How Madhya Pradesh PWD is thinking green

A pro-environment initiative has been brought into action from somewhat unexpected quarters in Madhya Pradesh, where the public works department (PWD)—traditionally associated with construction activity—has embarked upon a massive plantation process of planting some 250,000 saplings on roadsides—both state and national highways—campuses of PWD-owned buildings and open public land in rural and urban areas was initiated a month ago. It was all done in a single day, with protection measures for the planted saplings now PWD roped in specialised bodies to monitor the growth of the saplings, which belong to various indigenous varieties. These have been geo-tagged and their health will be monitored through satellite images, to be obtained from the Gujarat-based Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and minister Rakesh Singh told INDIA TODAY the plantation drive will also help prevent encroachment on public land alongside roads. He said the department is also creating reservoirs, called 'Lok Kalyan Sarover'. The concept behind the reservoirs is interesting. Road contractors often use soil available from the closest point for projects. The PWD has now told contractors they can dig soil only from designated spots and that the crater formed will have to be turned into a reservoir. The reservoirs would be reinforced using engineering concepts and geo-tagged. In the first phase, 500 Lok Kalyan Sarovers are PWD has also made it mandatory for all flyovers and rail overbridges to have bores for recharging groundwater through rain. This is meant to help improve the water of buildings adversely impacts air quality while the use of bitumen, tar and cement in road-building is environmentally degrading. Successful plantation drives can prove to be ameliorative provided these are taken up as sustainable and long-term interventions. The state forest department plants saplings every year in massive numbers but their success rate has been abysmal. Bhopal road caves in, leaves 10 ft-deep pit

Bhopal: On a day when the state capital Bhopal was ranked as the second cleanest big city in India at the Swacch Survekshan- 2025, a portion of a busy road caved in following heavy rainfall on Thursdday. MP Nagar that witnesses one of the heaviest traffic densities and connects New Bhopal and BHEL township and parts of Old City caved in leaving a pit approximately 8-10 feet wide. Luckily no pedestrians or vehicles were on the spot at the time. The damaged section is part of the main road connecting the Board Office to MP Nagar Zone-I. After the incident, traffic was disrupted, and congestion built up in nearby areas. Officials reached the site and directed that the area be barricaded. They stated that the collapse likely occurred due to soil erosion caused by an old underground drain. The road was originally under the Capital Project Administration and has been maintained by PWD Division No. 2 since 2002. Repair work began later in the day. Traffic police were deployed to manage movement and prevent further disruption. The incident however led to political protests. Congress state spokesperson Abhinav Barolia staged a dharna at the site, alleging poor construction and corruption in the Public Works Department (PWD). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! Barolia targeted PWD minister Rakesh Singh, referring to his earlier statement that potholes are common. He demanded an investigation and action against those responsible. Other Congress leaders also protested at the site by stepping into the pit and demanding accountability from officials. They alleged that road damage is widespread in the city and called for a probe into the condition of roads and construction quality. State Congress President Jeetu Patwari posted a video of the collapsed road on social media platform X, targeting the government and highlighting the incident as an example of poor infrastructure and mismanagement. Potholed road turns selfie point Times News Network Bhopal: The portion of road that caved in on Thursday afternoon has turned into a selfie and reel point with passers by stopping to click pictures or make a video to post on social media. Soon the social media was full of videos about the road, and comments from people. While people made reels and shared them on social media, the Opposition Congress took pot shots at the state govt and especially the PWD minister Rakesh Singh. Sub-divisional magistrate L K Khare, who visited the spot, stated, "Every road is different and here, the footpath is old and a sewage line runs under the road. Since the road has a slope, rainwater runs down from above and if there is heavy rainfall, the area gets temporarily waterlogged. The road will be repaired today, he asserted. New pipes have already been brought, and the repair work will start soon." he said. Congress workers led by Manoj Shukla reached the spot and garlanded the pit offering tributes to it. Shukla with his supporters also staged a sit-in inside the pit. Talking to media persons, Shukla, said, "MP Nagar is the commercial hub of the state capital and if this is the situation here, that in other parts of the city and state could be well imagined. The govt is neck-deep in corruption and we will work together to expose it." Shopkeepers from the area also came to check on the road. When asked how it happened, one of them said "We were not here when it happened. Luckily there was no loss of life or property as nobody was around at that time. The portion of road remains water-logged even at the slightest rain."
