Lawyer Daughter Challenges Ex-IG Father's Order Sacking UP Cop, Gets It Overturned
Retired IPS officer Rakesh Singh faced his daughter, advocate Anura Singh, in Allahabad High Court. Anura argued procedural flaws, leading to a constable's reinstatement.
In a striking instance of professional integrity taking precedence over personal ties, a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer found himself on the opposite side of the courtroom—facing his own daughter in a legal battle in the Allahabad High Court.
The case pertains to the retired top cop's suspension order for a constable, which was challenged by his advocate daughter, who appeared as counsel for the suspended constable, and finally got the order overturned, PTI reported.
What's The Case?
Rakesh Singh, a 2003-batch IPS officer and former Inspector General (IG) of Bareilly Range, had ordered the dismissal of constable Taufiq Ahmad after a girl accused him of molestation in Jaunray 2023. A POCSO case was filed against Ahmad. While the lower court later acquitted him, the police department dismissed him from service.
The then IG Rakesh Singh had taken a 'strict but duty-bound" decision to remove Ahmad from service, citing the severity of the charges. He had also rejected Ahmad's appeal against the dismissal
Challenging this, Ahmad approached the Allahabad High Court, appointing advocate Anura Singh, Rakesh Singh's daughter, as his lawyer, the report added.
In the court, she argued in the suspended constable's favour and said that the departmental inquiry violated the Uttar Pradesh Police Subordinate Ranks (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1991. She further said that the inquiry and dismissal order were flawed and did not comply with legal requirements.
Meanwhile, her father — the officer who had signed the dismissal order — was summoned to defend the department's action.
On one side stood the seasoned former IG, who defended the police department's decision. On the other hand, his determined daughter highlighted procedural flaws and legal violations in the inquiry process.
The High Court eventually quashed the departmental proceedings and ordered Bareilly Police to reinstate Ahmad.
'This writ petition thus, succeeds and is allowed. The inquiry report dated 14.04.2023 and order of the disciplinary authority dated 11.12.2023 are hereby quashed," the judgment dated July 31, 2025, said, as reported by the news agency.
'This was simply about doing our respective jobs," Anura said, adding that the authority of the court stands above all personal equations.
Rakesh Singh said he was proud his daughter upheld her professional role, while Ahmad expressed gratitude, saying he was unaware of the personal connection during the case.

Target store shooter fired randomly, had history of mental illness: Police
Last Updated: Austin, Aug 12 (AP) The Texas man who fatally shot three people in a Target parking lot, including a 4-year-old child and her grandfather, was unprovoked and opened fire randomly, police said Tuesday. Police say a 32-year-old Ethan Nieneker fatally shot a Target worker gathering shopping carts in the parking lot, then killed a man and his granddaughter before stealing their car. Police Chief Lisa Davis said Nieneker had a history of mental health problems, but said she was unaware of any specific diagnosis. Austin police Sgt. Nathan Sexton said the victims were chosen randomly. The violence sent store employees and shoppers fleeing for cover. Police say he stole two cars during the getaway that ended with his arrest on the other side of the city. Online court records show Nieneker had a history of arrests for domestic violence and assault. He was being held Tuesday on capital murder charges. Jail records do not list an attorney for him. Nieneker had been arrested several times in recent years in both Travis County, which includes Austin, and neighboring Williamson County. His arrests in Travis County included misdemeanors for criminal mischief and driving while intoxicated, and three arrests on felony domestic violence charges. He was convicted of a charge of assault causing bodily injury family violence in 2016 and briefly sentenced to jail. Another charge within days of the 2016 episode was dismissed, according to court records. It was not immediately clear if those two charges were related. Another charge of felony assault on a family or household member in 2019 was dismissed three years later when prosecutors could not locate the victim. Williamson County records show repeated run-ins with law enforcement, including two cases of misdemeanor family violence in 2015 that were later dismissed. He was also convicted of possession of marijuana in 2012 and entered a no contest plea to a charge of criminal mischief in 2016. Monday's shooting came as back-to-school shopping was in full swing ahead of the upcoming academic year. Police said that after the shooting, Nieneker stole a car from the store parking lot, wrecked that car and then stole another from a dealership before being captured about 20 miles (32 kilometers) away, in south Austin, where he was taken into custody. Police said offices used a Taser to detain him. The Target shooting comes just over two weeks after an attack at a Walmart store in Michigan. A man accused of stabbing 11 people at the Traverse City store on July 26 has been charged with terrorism and multiple counts of attempted murder. CBI arrests Meerut CGHS official, 2 more accepting bribe at hospitals complaint
New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an additional director of CGHS, Meerut, on Tuesday and two more for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 50 lakh from a hospital for not de-empanelling them from a government scheme, an official said. The probe agency arrested Additional Director Ajay Kumar and office Superintendent Lavesh Solanki, both posted in Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Swasthya Bhavan Meerut, and a middleman, Raees Ahmad. The CBI had earlier booked them on a complaint from a director of the hospital group, alleging that Kumar and his cronies demanded a bribe for not de-empanelling two hospitals affiliated with the group. The complaint centred around a surprise inspection conducted by a team from CGHS Meerut on July 8 at two of the group's hospitals. The CGHS team issued notices citing 'frivolous deficiencies" in both facilities and threatened to de-empanel them, allegedly to extort money, they said. The de-empanelment of the hospitals would have rendered them ineligible for treating patients under the CGHS scheme. 'Both the accused public servants had insisted on the delivery of bribe amount of Rs 50 lakh at the earliest to avoid de-empanelment of the hospitals," a CBI spokesperson said in a statement. The officials agreed to accept a partial payment of Rs 5 lakh as the first instalment of the bribe, but then the hospital complained. A team raided the premises where Kumar, Solanki and Ahmad were caught red-handed while taking the bribe, the spokesperson said. The agency also conducted searches at the residences of the accused.
