Haveri: "The decline in investigative journalism and writers focusing on public issues has become apparent recently.
The importance of maintaining active and dedicated journalists for the survival of investigative journalism," stated Haveri district minister Shivanand Patil.
Speaking at the inauguration of the district-level Press Day and talent award ceremony, organised by the Haveri District Working Journalists' Association on Monday, Patil shared his observations. "In today's society, journalists serve as crucial agents of change.
While print media maintains rigorous source verification practices, the rise of electronic media has affected the presence of analytical writers," said Patil, voicing his unease regarding electronic media's tendency to prioritise breaking news without considering its social implications.
He declared a Rs 5 lakh allocation for journalists' welfare initiatives.
KV Prabhakar, chief minister's media advisor, emphasised how academically curious children progress in society.
He expressed concern about the impact of excessive mobile phone and tablet usage on personal connections. "Parents should encourage both academic excellence and human values, emphasising the importance of studiousness," he stated.
Saying that proliferation of unverified journalism and misinformation has emerged as a significant issue, Prabhakar emphasised the necessity of accurate reporting over sensationalised content.
He discussed the transition from print to AI technology, noting his concern about deteriorating professional standards. "The govt plans for fact-checking legislation, free bus passes, and health cards for rural journalists, encouraging them to utilise available benefits," he stated.
The event was attended by legislators Basavaraj Shivannanavar, Prakash Koliwada, Haveri CMC Shashikala Malagi, DCC president Sanjeevkumar Neeralagi, Huda president SFN Gajigaudra, DC Vijay Mahantesh Danammanavar, ZP CEO Ruchi Bindal, and SP Yashoda Vantagodi.

Negi accuses BJP of insulting national flag

Shimla, Jul 27(UNI) Himachal Pradesh Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi has strongly criticized BJP leaders and a few local businessmen in Thunag for allegedly insulting the national flag during a protest against the government's decision to shift the Horticulture College from Thunag to a safer location. Negi defended the Congress government's move to relocate the college, citing the recent flash floods and the risk to students' lives. "It is wrong to run a college in a disaster-prone area just to protect business interests of a few people," he said, adding that students living in rented homes in Thunag had themselves requested relocation due to repeated disasters in 2023 and 2024. The Minister said that BJP workers and a handful of shopkeepers tried to block the state government's decision and even created a scene during his visit to the area. 'They surrounded my vehicle, threw black cloths and a slipper-like object at it, and disrespected the tricolour mounted on the car,' he alleged. 'This act amounts to treason,' he added. Negi also questioned the BJP's silence over the incomplete infrastructure of the college. "Out of the total Rs 270 crore sanctioned, only Rs 10 crore was spent when BJP was in power," he claimed. He said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is personally monitoring the situation and relief work is going on without any resistance from the common people. 'Only some BJP leaders and businessmen are trying to politicize the issue,' Negi said. Negi further targeted BJP leader Dr. Rajeev Bindal, saying, 'The real shameful act is the insult of the national flag, not the relocation of the college meant to save lives.' The college was shifted after discussions with the university, as there was no suitable vacant land in the Saraj area, the Minister clarified. UNI ML RKM

Jhalawar tragedy: Govt fast-tracks 169cr plan to repair state schools

Jaipur: Following the school building collapse in Jhalawar that killed seven children and injured 21, the state administration has approved Rs 169.5 crore for major repair works in 1,936 govt schools. On Saturday, education minister Madan Dilawar said, "State govt has approved Rs 169.5 crore for major repair works in 1,936 govt schools." Officials from the minister's team said the amount was approved as per the current year's budget announcement. Speaking on the timing of the approval, Satish Gupta, the minister's officer on special duty (OSD), said, "The file was already in process, and now the approval has been received from the finance department. Orders will also be issued soon on this." Dilawar could not be reached for comments. Sources said approvals for major repair works were "in process" for the past two months but were fast-tracked only after the accident in Jhalawar. On Sunday, following a high-level meeting chaired by the education minister, a new proposal of Rs 150 crore was announced for repair works in 7,500 schools in 170 tehsils. The financial contribution, which will come from the Disaster Management Fund, will be used for the repair of schools damaged due to the monsoon rains. The department has also asked its officials to conduct field inspections of govt schools across the state and submit a report on the condition of the buildings by July 30.

If I became CM, I would give Rs 1 lakh incentive to regular farm loan repayers: Mushrif

Kolhapur: Govt spent Rs 46,000 crore last year towards Mukhyamantri Mazhi Ladki Bahin yojana installments of Rs 1,500 for all eligible women. Therefore, the financial situation is tough, as a result of which, govt is unable to fulfil the promise of farm loan waiver as promised by Mahayuti during the assembly election, said NCP politician and minister of medical education Hasan Mushrif. Speaking at Vandur village in Kolhapur on Saturday evening, Mushrif said that if in the future he becomes the chief minister, he would increase the incentive to the farmers repaying loans regularly from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. Due to the promise of a loan waiver, farmers have kept their loan dues pending, except in Kolhapur district, where 91% of agricultural loans were recovered. "Another promise we made is the loan waiver to the farmers. The situation is quite challenging. This year, we disbursed Rs 46,000 crore for Ladki Bahin. Recently, we found that as many as 14,000 men have been listed as beneficiaries. I have a different view on loan waiver. Farmers don't pay loans if govt declares the intention of a loan waiver. The dues keep pending. The banks go deep into crisis. Therefore, if I become CM in the future, by the grace of God and people's support, I will increase the incentive amount to Rs 1 lakh from Rs 50,000," said Mushrif. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Official IQ Test: What is Your IQ? | Answer 30 Questions to Find Out IQ International Undo Mushrif also said govt has not distanced itself from increasing the Rs 1,500 monthly Ladki Bahin instalment to Rs 2,100. "Press the button in front of clock (NCP symbol) and lotus (BJP symbol) during the upcoming zilla parishad and local body elections. We will not rest until we get Rs 2,100 into the accounts of Ladki Bahin beneficiaries," said Mushrif.
