Cabinet clears MahaAgri-AI Policy to put Maharashtra at the forefront in digital innovation
Mumbai: The state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Tuesday cleared the Maharashtra Agriculture-Artificial Intelligence MahaAgri-AI Policy 2025-2029, which aims to keep the state's agriculture sector at the forefront of the digital era.
'Sustainable and scalable solutions will be implemented with the help of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Generative AI, Internet of Things (IoTs), Drones, Computer Vision, Robotics and Predictive Analytics. It will help in taking forward projects like Agristack, Maha-Agristack, Mahavedh, CropSap, Agmarknet, Digital Farming School, and Maha-DBT in the state. There will be a three-tier administrative structure for the implementation of this policy. A fund of Rs 500 crore will be made available for the first three years for the implementation of this policy,' said the government release.
The Cabinet also decided to amend or make changes to the policy in the next five years, as the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector is changing rapidly. For this, the State Level Steering Committee, State Level Technical Committee, Artificial Intelligence and Agritech Innovation Centre, and Agricultural Artificial Intelligence Research and Innovation Centre under the Agricultural University will work.
'The policy will create a leading hub for AI and innovation in the agricultural sector in the state, will increase 'farmer-centric use' of AI technology, research, data sharing, support for start-ups, and it is expected to put Maharashtra at the forefront of digital agricultural innovation,' said the government release.
According to the state agriculture department, the policy will encourage startups, private companies/technology companies, agricultural universities, research institutes, agricultural science centres, private institutions and farmers/Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to adopt "farmer-centric" use of Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies.
This will involve institutionalising an Artificial Intelligence and Agritech Innovation Centre, which will act as an independent, full-time implementing mechanism for the practical implementation of this policy. This mechanism will work on various aspects under the policy, such as partnerships with national and international institutions, promotion of innovations, selection, implementation and financing of projects, coordination and capacity building.
Agri-Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Incubation Centres will be set up in four agricultural universities in the state under the guidance of institutions like IITs/IISc. According to the policy, a digital public infrastructure will be set up to support data-driven agriculture and AI applications. These facilities will facilitate state-wide, secure, consistent and consent-based data exchange.
A cloud-based Agriculture Data Exchange (A-DeX) and sandboxing facility will be made available, connecting all agriculture-related databases of the Central and State Governments (Agristack, Mahavedh, Maha-Agritech, CropSap, Agmarknet, Digital Shetishala and Maha-DBT) to this digital platform. Through this exchange, data on farmers, their land, crop information, local weather, and soil health will be made available for AI projects.
'An integrated engine with AI-enabled Remote Sensing and Geo-spatial Intelligence will be developed. This will help in decision making by analysing spatial information from various sources collected through satellite imagery, drone surveys, UAVs and IoT-based devices. This system will be connected to national and state platforms like MahaVedh, FASAL, and Bhuvan through API. This platform can be used by departments like Agriculture, Water Resources and Revenue and Disaster Management for various purposes,' said the government release.

Maharashtra doubles honorarium of Emergency-era prisoners
The Maharashtra cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday (June 17, 2025), doubled the monthly honorarium given to individuals from the State who were imprisoned for over a month during the Emergency. The cabinet also decided that in case such persons have died, a surviving spouse would receive half the amount as an honorarium. The name of the imprisoned individual's spouse will also be added as a beneficiary. The cabinet approved the changes under the ongoing policy, 'Gaurav Yojana,' a policy introduced by Mr. Fadnavis during his first term as CM in 2018 to provide a monthly honorarium to such individuals. The announcement on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) also marked the 50th anniversary of the 21-month Emergency from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, which was declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Benefits under the scheme at present include a monthly pension of ₹ 5,000 for those imprisoned for a month; those jailed for longer durations get ₹10,000 per month. These amounts will be doubled as per the cabinet decision. Under existing rules, if those imprisoned have died, their kin will receive a monthly pension of ₹2,500 (for a jail term of a month or less) and ₹5,000 (for a jail term of more than a month). Those eligible can apply to the district collectorate on a ₹100 stamp paper. This will be scrutinised by a committee headed by the collector.

Farmers to get AI push, Maha to allot Rs500cr for 1st 3 years
Nagpur: The Maharashtra government on Monday approved a new Rs500 crore plan 'MahaAgri-AI Policy 2025–2029' to help farmers use artificial intelligence (AI) and new technologies for better farming. The policy was approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by CM Devendra Fadnavis. Over the next five years, AI will be used for tasks like crop monitoring, weather updates, farm advice, market trends, and pest control. The goal is to make farming more accurate, efficient, and profitable for farmers. Technologies like drones, smart sensors, and mobile apps will help collect and share information with farmers in real time. The policy will begin with Rs500 crore funding for the first three years. A special team, technical experts, and a new Centre for AgriTech and AI Innovation will help run the programme. This centre will also support startups and train people in using new tools. Many existing digital platforms like MahaVedh, AgriStack, CropSAP, and Mahadbt will be integrated together into a single system called agricultural data exchange (A-DeX). It will help farmers get data about land, soil, weather, and markets through easy-to-use mobile and online services. A smart system using satellite images, drones, and internet-connected devices will help government departments make better decisions. It will work along with national platforms like ISRO's Bhuvan and the central government's Fasal project. The state will also start an AI-powered service called Vistaar, which will advise farmers in Marathi using chatbots and voice assistants on topics like crops, prices, pests, and government schemes. To help farmers sell their crops in global markets, a blockchain system will track every step from the farm to the market. It will record the use of fertilizers, farming methods, and quality checks with QR codes, starting with export-quality crops. Four AI training centres will be set up in state agricultural universities. Scientists, officials, and farmer producer groups will be trained in using AI. A helpdesk will also be created for technical support. The government will also host a yearly "AI in Agriculture" event to bring together farmers, experts, companies, and investors. This event will be held in different districts each year. The government in a statement said the entire programme is designed to directly benefit farmers and make farming more modern, secure, and successful in Maharashtra.

Mahayuti rolls out voter connect drive ahead of local polls
Nagpur: Seeking to regain ground ahead of the crucial local body elections, the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP govt has rolled out an ambitious outreach drive titled 'Sarkar Aplya Dari' (Government at Your Doorstep). This initiative will see all ministers from the ruling Mahayuti alliance fan out across Maharashtra's 36 districts to directly hear and address public grievances. Labour minister Aakash Fundkar kicked off the campaign in Nagpur on Monday with a closed-door meeting at the BJP's Ganeshpeth office, where he interacted with city and district-level party workers. The focus was on fine-tuning the mechanism to collect civic complaints and speed up their redressal through local coordination with officials. The drive aims to shift the power dynamic from Mantralaya to the grassroots, according to spokesperson Chandan Goswami. "Under Sarkar Aplya Dari, people no longer need to travel to Mumbai to get their issues addressed," Fundkar told party leaders. "We're bringing the govt directly to every district. Ministers and officers will be accessible on the ground, and our party workers will be the crucial link in identifying and resolving local concerns." While the BJP has packaged the initiative as a governance reform, party sources acknowledge it is also a calibrated political strategy to blunt anti-incumbency narratives ahead of the polls. With the Opposition targeting the ruling alliance on issues of public discontent, the Mahayuti appears to be pivoting towards course correction and organisational reboot. The event also saw the presence of newly appointed and former mandal heads, as well as key local leaders such as Sudhir Deulgaonkar, Guddu Trivedi, Ram Abulkar, Balya Borkar, Vishnu Changde, Ashwini Jichkar, Shivani Dani, Chetan Kayarkar, Pragati Patil, and Bhojraj Dumbe.
