Guwahati, known for its heavy monsoon rains, recently witnessed an extraordinary incident that left residents and netizens amazed. Amid waterlogged streets and chaos in the city, a Maruti Suzuki Alto emerged as the unexpected hero, navigating through flooded roads with remarkable ease.
Often overshadowed by SUVs like the Mahindra Thar and Toyota Fortuner, the Alto proved that size isn't everything when it comes to tackling urban floods.
Alto Vs Flooded Streets: The Unlikely Champion
On a rainy afternoon, when most commuters were stranded, a lone Alto was seen cruising confidently through knee-deep waters in one of Guwahati's busiest areas. Residents watching in disbelief could hardly believe their eyes. The small car, often considered an entry-level vehicle for city use, displayed astonishing stability and control, defying expectations. Videos of the Alto manoeuvring through the flooded streets quickly circulated on social media, gaining thousands of views and comments praising its surprising performance.
Why Alto Stood Out
Experts note that while SUVs like the Thar and Fortuner are designed for off-road and tough terrains, the Alto's performance in the floods highlights the importance of smart driving and compact vehicle dynamics. Its lightweight design, small footprint, and precise handling allowed it to avoid stalling and navigate effectively where larger vehicles sometimes struggled. The Alto's ability to maintain traction even in challenging waterlogged conditions earned it comparisons to the 'GOAT of mountains" and sparked playful memes online.
Internet Reacts
The videos of the Alto went viral, with users expressing awe and admiration. One comment read, 'We've seen Thar and Fortuner do this, but seeing Alto in action is next level!" Another wrote, 'LORD ALTO IN NO MERCY MODE! Who needs SUVs when this little legend exists?" Many shared their personal experiences of the Alto performing admirably in heavy rains, further boosting its reputation among city drivers.

Takeaways for City Commuters
While SUVs are often considered flood-ready, the Alto incident serves as a reminder that skilful driving and awareness of road conditions can make even a compact car a capable commuter during monsoons. Guwahati residents now have a new hero to talk about—the Alto, a small car with a surprisingly big performance in the face of nature's fury. Buzz Staff

Elon Musk Quietly Pauses Plans For Launch Of His Own Political Party: Report

Elon Musk is stepping back from launching his own political party to focus on Tesla and SpaceX amid financial challenges. Elon Musk is quietly stepping back from plans to launch his own political party in the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported citing people familiar with the matter. The billionaire entrepreneur, who heads Tesla and SpaceX and owns X (formerly Twitter), reportedly told associates he wants to concentrate on his companies rather than push ahead with the 'America Party", unveiled in July after a public row with US President Donald Trump over tax and spending policy. Elon Musk appeared to dismiss the report in a post on X, writing: 'Nothing @WSJ says should ever be thought of as true." The paper reported that Elon Musk has been seeking to maintain close ties with Vice President JD Vance and has acknowledged privately that forming a new political party could jeopardise that relationship. People close to the discussions told the Journal that Elon Musk may instead consider directing financial support towards JD Vance if he decides to run for president in 2028. Last year, Elon Musk spent nearly $300 million backing Donald Trump and other Republicans, exerting outsized influence during the opening weeks of Donald Trump's presidency and the launch of the new 'efficiency department" DOGE. Elon Musk's Tesla Suffers The latest report comes as Tesla faces mounting financial and operational challenges. Shares in the electric carmaker are down more than 18% this year after it reported in July its worst quarterly sales decline in over a decade, alongside weaker-than-expected profits. Elon Musk has warned investors to expect 'a few rough quarters" following the Donald Trump administration's rollback of subsidies for electric vehicles. Some investors have also expressed concern that Elon Musk's foray into politics could distract him from his corporate responsibilities. view comments First Published: August 20, 2025, 17:42 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Video: Tata Harrier Stuck In Flooded Thane Underpass, Locals Step In For Daring Rescue

Last Updated: A Tata Harrier got stuck in a flooded Thane underpass after the driver misjudged the water level, forcing locals to rescue the trapped passengers. Heavy rains have been lashing several parts of Maharashtra, leaving many cities waterlogged. In Thane, one such downpour flooded an underpass connecting Narivali and Uttarshiv villages. Amid the chaos, a Tata Harrier SUV got trapped in the water, leading to a dramatic rescue that has gone viral on social media. Two locals swam through the floodwaters to save the people trapped inside the sinking vehicle, an act of bravery that drew praise online. At first, reports suggested that the SUV had accidentally lost control and got stuck. However, another video that surfaced later revealed a different story, one that pointed towards poor judgment on the part of the driver. The Harrier, it turned out, wasn't simply unlucky but was driven into conditions it was not built to handle. How Did the Harrier Get Submerged? The underpass was heavily flooded, with water levels estimated to be around four feet high, almost one-third of the structure's height. Despite seeing other vehicles stranded on either side of the underpass, the Harrier's driver decided to push ahead. Perhaps overconfident in the SUV's capabilities, the driver assumed the vehicle could handle the challenge. After all, the Tata Harrier is known for its tough build, Land Rover-derived platform, and strong road presence. In the video, the driver is seen attempting a left turn inside the waterlogged stretch, possibly to avoid deeper patches. Unfortunately, the left side was even more flooded. Within seconds, the SUV's nose dipped, the engine-heavy front end sank, and buoyant forces lifted the rear. The bonnet went under completely, and water began pouring into the cabin. This was when locals rushed in and pulled out the passengers just in time, preventing a tragedy. Watch the video here: Insurance Trouble Ahead While the passengers were rescued safely, the Harrier itself likely suffered severe damage. Floodwater entering the cabin and engine can ruin critical systems, including electronics and the powertrain. Repairs for such damage can cost a huge amount. Now comes the bigger problem: the insurance claim. Most comprehensive insurance policies cover flood-related damage, but there is a catch. If the engine suffers a hydrostatic lock, when water enters the cylinders and causes it to seize, insurers often reject the claim. From the videos, it looks like the Harrier did suffer this fate. That means the owner may not receive any compensation and will have to pay a hefty repair bill out of pocket. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jahangir Riyasat (@focuskainat) The Lesson Learned This incident highlights the importance of knowing both your car's limits and the dangers of driving through waterlogged areas. The Tata Harrier is a capable SUV, but no vehicle can defy physics. Driving into water levels far higher than the car's rated capacity was a serious mistake. Thankfully, quick-thinking locals saved lives, but the SUV owner will likely face huge financial losses. The takeaway is simple: in heavy floods, it is always better to wait than risk driving through deep waters. Click here to add News18 as your preferred news source on Google. Tata Motors re-enters South African passenger vehicle market

Agency: New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Tata Motors on Wednesday said it has re-entered the South African passenger vehicle market. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, has launched four models — Harrier, Curvv, Punch, and Tiago — in the country. This strategic re-entry is underpinned by a strong alliance with Motus Holdings, South Africa's foremost automotive group, the Mumbai-based auto major said in a statement. 'Our return to South Africa marks a significant milestone in Tata Motors' global journey," TMPV Managing Director Shailesh Chandra stated. With Motus as the preferred partner, the company is confident in delivering a superior ownership experience that resonates with South African consumers and contributes meaningfully to the local economy, he added. view comments First Published: August 20, 2025, 14:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
