Nashik civic body starts repairing city roads, fills over 6,000 potholes in a week

Time of India2 days ago

Nashik: With the rain taking a break, the Nashik Municipal Corporation's (NMC) public works department has commenced extensive road repair operations across the city.
The civic administration announced on Tuesday that it had successfully filled 6,226 potholes across the six divisions within the last week alone.
These crucial road repair efforts began ahead of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's two-day visit to Nashik city on Sunday and Monday.
During his visit, the chief minister travelled through various city roads while attending multiple programmes.
The condition of roads in Nashik had significantly worsened due to continuous heavy rainfall last month, posing considerable risks to motorists. Furthermore, roads excavated by Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL) for laying piped natural gas pipelines added to the deterioration.
While the NMC had initially planned to begin repair works from May 15, persistent showers prevented these efforts. Now, with the rainfall having ceased, the civic body has been able to fully embark on its road repair agenda.
An NMC official, while talking to TOI, said they conducted a fresh survey of the city roads and found around 9,000 potholes in various parts of the city. "So far, we have filled 6,226 potholes and the remaining will be repaired shortly.

At 3,831, most potholes were repaired in the Panchavati division followed by over 2,800 potholes in the Cidco division," the official said.
"The roads that were dug up by the MNGL and other agencies for various purposes deteriorated the road conditions of most of the city roads. We have also started repairs of such roads. We also gave work orders to the agencies concerned for road repairs and resurfacing of some stretches of the city roads amounting to Rs 90 crore," the official added
The official said all the city roads are to be repaired in the next couple of weeks.

Lower wage growth impacting consumption; tax cuts and rate cuts tools to spur growth: Report

Weakening wage and job growth cycle is impacting consumption sentiment , and tax cuts and rate cuts will help accelerate momentum, according to a report by ICICI Bank Global Markets. The report highlights that wage growth for listed Indian companies nearly halved in the financial year (FY) 2025, slowing to 7.5 per cent from an average of 15 per cent year-on-year (YoY) between FY22 and FY24, impacting consumption. The deceleration in wage growth can be attributed to the tepid demand and global economic uncertainty. The report adds that the slowdown, coupled with high inflation and elevated interest rates, has eroded consumers' discretionary income, particularly in urban areas. Spending across sectors has dampened. "Lower interest rates should lead to further recovery in consumption as repo-linked loans get repriced lower and reduce the interest outgo for consumers," according to ICICI Bank Global Markets report . "We believe further monetary support is required to spur consumption when inflation is easing," it said. Backing its assertion, the report added that Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sales in urban centres are trailing rural markets. In contrast, passenger vehicle sales growth has sharply decelerated to 4.5 per cent in FY25 from 8.8 per cent the previous year. On the job growth front, the report added that once a strong hiring engine, the IT sector continues to grapple with demand challenges from tech disruptions, monetary tightening, and trade volatility. Net hiring peaked at 293,000 in FY22 and saw a net contraction of 70,000 by FY24. The Indian economy grew by 6.5 per cent in real terms in the recently concluded financial year 2024-25, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's official data. While the economic growth was 7.4 per cent in the January-March quarter (Q4) of FY25. This was a sharp rise from the 6.2 per cent recorded in the previous quarter. Given the underlying weakness in urban demand , the government announced an income tax relief of Rs 1 trillion in the Union Budget 2025-26. The other factors favouring a consumption recovery are lower food inflation as well as the recent uptick seen in GST collections. In the last two months we have seen a visible acceleration in GST collections, with gross GST revenues increasing by 16.4 per cent YoY in May and 12.6 per cent YoY in April, respectively.

Iran 'strongly' condemns US veto of UN Gaza ceasefire resolution

Displaced Palestinians return to retrieve their belongings from their homes in the area where the Israeli army operated in the northern Gaza Strip (AP) TEHRAN: Iran on Thursday denounced the United States on Thursday for vetoing a United Nations Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire and full humanitarian access in Gaza. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said in a statement that the US move to block the resolution, which was supported by 14 of the 15 members of the council, demonstrated "the country's complicity in the crimes of the Zionist regime (Israel) and strongly condemned it". The draft resolution had demanded "an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties" and the unconditional release of hostages held by Hamas in the war-torn Gaza Strip. It also called for the lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the territory. Baqaei said the veto "is not only an explicit affront by the US government to the will of the international community ... but also a sign of the moral decline of American decision-makers" and evidence of Washington's complicity in Israel's killing of Palestinians. Washington's envoy to the UN, Dorothy Shea, said on Wednesday that passing the resolution "would undermine diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire that reflects the realities on the ground and emboldens Hamas," which is backed by Iran. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Tehran, which does not recognise Israel, has framed the Palestinian cause as a central tenet of its foreign policy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Why not FIR filed over stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium, questions Karnataka BJP

Bengaluru: Slamming the Congress-led government in Karnataka for not filing an FIR regarding the stampede incident near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru which resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people, the Karnataka BJP on Thursday demanded a judicial probe into the incident by a sitting High Court judge. The demand was made in the joint press conference by the BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra and the Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka and Chalavadi Narayaswamy, the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council. Vijayendra said: 'An unnatural death case (UDR) has been registered at the Cubbon Park police station, and an investigation has begun regarding the tragedy. Eleven innocent lives were lost due to the government's irresponsibility and thorough investigation is needed. The state government cannot escape accountability. Why the FIR has been not filed yet,' he questioned. Vijayendra urged the Chief Minister to order an inquiry by a sitting High Court judge and called for proper decisions from the state government. He further demanded a minimum compensation amount of Rs 50 lakh for the families of the victims. Criticising the magisterial probe order, Vijeyandra charged that an inquiry by a magistrate would be insufficient to investigate the Chief Minister and cabinet members, who are in a position of culpability. He questioned the Chief Minister's decision to order a magisterial inquiry, stating that the government is unwilling to take responsibility for its failures. He stated that a situation has arisen in the state where the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and Home Minister should resign. Vijayendra also demanded that RCB owners should provide compensation. He highlighted that when an elephant from Karnataka caused a death by trampling in Kerala, the Karnataka government announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh. Vijayendra further criticised the state government's "inhumane conduct" as "condemnable". He pointed out that even as news channels already reported five or six deaths, the Deputy Chief Minister was celebrating at Chinnaswamy Stadium, and ruling party members continued their selfie spree at Vidhana Soudha. Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka, meanwhile, said: 'We will not accept an investigation by the District Collector. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is being filed before the High Court Chief Justice. The investigation must be conducted under the supervision of a High Court judge, and an SIT should be formed for this purpose. The report must be submitted directly to the High Court. Justice must be delivered for all these deaths, and those responsible must be punished.' 'How can Deputy Commissioners, who work under the CM and report to him, conduct an impartial investigation? They were responsible for planning the event, finalizing its framework, and making preparations. It's impossible to believe they would honestly investigate the government's lapses and errors. Deceiving the public and causing deaths is bad enough—why are they now resorting to self-deception and adding to their sins? Only a judicial probe can deliver justice to innocent lives and their parents. The Congress government must not stoop to such pettiness even in the face of death." Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, questioned: "If the police and the government are not responsible, then who is?" Narayanaswamy, has asserted that the state government is directly responsible for the deaths. He demanded that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister take direct responsibility and resign immediately. He questioned why the state government felt the need to organise the celebration, which should have been handled by a cricket body. He condemned the government's announcement of only Rs 10 lakh compensation for those who died in such a tragic incident, calling it unacceptable. Meanwhile, social activist Snehamayi Krishna filed a complaint with the Cubbon Park police on Thursday against CM Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, office-bearers of the KSCA, and others. In his complaint, Krishna demanded that the police register the case under Section 106 of the BNS Act. A copy of the complaint has also been sent to the bench of the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, and the petition has pleaded for action to be initiated against the guilty, stating it is a serious matter.
