Centre alerts world's largest solar park, and RIL's biggest global refinery as tensions with Pakistan escalate
New Delhi: The Centre has put the country's key energy assets along the Pakistan border in Gujarat—including the world's largest solar power park at Khavda, and the world's biggest oil refinery at Jamnagar—on high alert, along with increasing the security at these facilities.
'The security at energy installations along the Pakistan border, including Khavda RE park and Jamnagar refinery are already at high alert and security has been further tightened,' said a person aware of the development on condition of anonymity.
Khavda is touted to be the world's largest renewable energy park with a cumulative capacity of 45 GW, with Adani Green developing the largest share of 30 GW. The other developers in the park include state-run NTPC and Gujarat Industries Power Company (GIPC).
The project, in Kutch area of Gujarat, is just 1 km away from the India-Pakistan border and falls under the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF).
Jamnagar oil refinery is also under high alert as the area has an airbase and is a no-fly zone for civilian aircraft. The refinery is owned and operated by Reliance Industries, and is the largest and most complex single-site refinery in the world with 1.4 million barrels per day (MMBPD) crude processing capacity and a complexity index of 21.1—the highest in the world.
The refinery is also a major exporter of petroleum products from India. Another person aware of the matter said that security at the refinery has been heightened and it is under constant vigil.
Queries mailed to the Union ministry of home affairs, Adani Group, NTPC and Reliance Industries remained unanswered till press time.
Simarpreet Singh, executive director & CEO of Hartek Group, a renewable energy company, said: 'Safeguarding renewable energy resources requires a robust and multifold approach. This includes extensive physical security such as perimeter fencing, surveillance, staffing, and practical vertical security alongside cyber security."
Singh added that also equally critical are avoiding prolonged response times, layering with insurance policies to manage fiscal exposure, and regular safety drills.
'What goes beyond the supply of electricity is the enduring and unwavering response supported by strong infrastructure that is built, keeping in mind, geopolitical unpredictability,' he added.
There are three Indian Air Force bases – Jamnagar, Naliya and Bhuj – within a radius of 50 km and the area is under high alert. Further, the Jamnagar airport is also closed, along with 24 other airports as per NOTAM (Notice To Airmen) issued by the government till 9 May.
The preparedness has been enhanced after the Indian armed forces carried out targeted strikes on nine terror-linked sites under 'Operation Sindoor' early on Wednesday.
The operation came as a response to terrorist attacks in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir that killed 26 people, including a Nepali citizen.
Mock drills have also been carried out across major cities to test emergency response systems in hospitals, schools, and government offices.
As of 1 April 2025, Adani Green, which has a cumulative operational renewable capacity of over 14 GW, commissioned around 5 GW at Khavda.

PDP chief urges MEA to ensure safety of students in Iran
Former J&K chief minister (CM) Mehbooba Mufti has sought Centre's intervention for safeguarding Kashmiri students studying in Iran, and J&K Students Association has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the same. Thousands of students from J&K are waiting for evacuation from different cities of Iran, with escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. Former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday said that central government should ensure safety of students. 'Families of the stranded students in Iran are growing increasingly anxious with each passing day. I earnestly urge the ministry of external affairs to intervene and take immediate steps to ensure the safe return of their loved ones,' Mehbooba Mufti wrote on X. Prominent Shia leader and general secretary of Peoples Conference Imran Reza Ansari said that government of India is working on evacuation of Indian nationals and J&K students. 'Spoke to HE Ambassador of Republic of India in Iran Rudra Gaurav Shresth. He is personally monitoring the situation and is ensuring the safety of the Indian nationals and students from Jammu and Kashmir They are working on evacuation of the students in Tehran to a safer location for the time being. We have complete faith and trust in all the officials at the mission in Tehran,' he wrote on X. Meanwhile J&K Students Association in a letter to the PM has requested immediate intervention and evacuation of the Kashmiri students. The letter said that the dire situation is faced by hundreds of Kashmiri students currently studying in Iran, following the unprecedented escalation in hostilities between Iran and Israel. 'The recent Israeli preemptive airstrikes on Iran's nuclear infrastructure, followed by a barrage of retaliatory drone and missile attacks by Iran, have brought the region to the brink of a full-scale conflict. This volatile security environment has left thousands of Indian students, majority of them from Kashmir valley, extremely vulnerable and exposed to immediate danger. These students had travelled to Iran to pursue professional education, particularly MBBS, due to the country's economically viable academic infrastructure. Now, they find themselves in the middle of an active military zone, fearful for their lives,' reads the letter. The letter said that numerous students have contacted the Indian Embassy in Tehran seeking support, relocation, or evacuation. 'However, they have not received any reassuring response or concrete information about what the next steps will be. They remain in a state of confusion and despair, with no clarity about evacuation plans, safety protocols, or emergency assistance. We earnestly urge you to direct the external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar to take urgent steps to relocate the students to safer areas within Iran and initiate immediate evacuation efforts. This will provide much-needed relief and assurance to the distressed families back home.'

Retail inflation in Punjab hits six-month high at 5.21%
Chandigarh: Retail inflation in Punjab soared to 5.21% in May, marking the highest level in the past six month and significantly exceeding the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) medium-term target of 4%. The rise in prices has hit rural households harder, with residents in these areas spending more on daily necessities than their urban counterparts. This sharp uptick in inflation stands in stark contrast to the national trend, where retail inflation eased to 2.82% — the lowest since Feb 2019. In neighbouring states, the situation was markedly better: Haryana recorded an inflation rate of 3.67% and Himachal Pradesh 2.89%. Experts attribute Punjab's rising inflation to sustained increases in the prices of essential goods and services, particularly housing, food and beverages, clothing and footwear, and fuel and lighting. These categories have seen consistent price hikes across both rural and urban regions of the state. The general consumer price index for Punjab rose from 185.6 in April to 187.8 in May. In rural Punjab, the consumer price index climbed from 189.8 to 191.7, while urban went from 180.5 to 182.9. The state saw a steady rise in inflation over recent months: 4.28% in Jan, 3.55% in Feb, 3.65% in March, and 4.09% in April — culminating in the sharp jump to 5.21% in May. Kerala topped the national chart with the highest inflation rate at 6.46%, while Jammu and Kashmir recorded 4.55% and Uttarakhand 3.47%. Experts caution that consumer price index inflation may climb further in the final quarter of the current financial year. At the national level, the average CPI inflation for financial year 2026 is projected to be in the range of 3.3% to 3.5%, while the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) estimates it slightly higher at 3.7%, compared to the financial 2025 average of 4.6%. Can equities sustain their rebound amidst ongoing Middle East conflict?

BSE's Sensex rose 677.5 points, or 0.8%, to end at 81,796. Both indices fell 1.7% in the previous two trading sessions after tensions in the Middle East escalated after Israel had launched unprecedented strikes on Iran, sending global oil prices in Asia, Japan was up 1.3%, China advanced 0.35%, Hong Kong rose 0.7%, and South Korea gained 1.8%. "India is not very heavily dependent on Iran for its crude oil imports, and Brent crude prices also came off on Monday, which is providing more comfort to traders."Brent Crude August futures declined 1.2% to $73.3 per barrel on Monday evening after hitting as much as $76 earlier in the Volatility Index or VIX-the market's fear gauge-fell by 1.6% to 14.8 levels on Monday, indicating easing risk sentiment."With Iran showing limited capacity to escalate the conflict further, the situation has become more one-sided, and some degree of de-escalation is now expected, which has brought a sense of optimism back to the street," said Pranay Aggarwal, director and CEO of Nifty Midcap 150 gained 0.75% and the Nifty Small-cap 250 rose 0.5% at close.
