TV fans can't get over one hilarious detail in 'masterpiece' sci-fi series

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A new sci-fi horror show is turning heads online after airing just two episodes. Alien: Earth just dropped internationally on Disney Plus and fans are already going into a frenzy. Set in the iconic Alien universe, the show has been branded a 'masterpiece' by fans who say it's one of the best things they've ever watched. Yet there's one detail that keeps distracting viewers. Specifically, people find it funny that the Ice Age films play such a significant role in the series. Unsurprisingly, fans have already taken to social media to poke fun at Sid the Sloth's repeated cameos. @GodzillaMendoza wrote on X: 'There's a scene in Alien Earth where Sid the Sloth from Ice Age slowly fades onto the screen as a transparent overlay during a really emotional scene, and I gotta say that's… that's just wonderful.' @Connor2202_ was similarly amused, posting 'Maybe the boldest choice in Alien Earth is the idea that people will still be watching Ice Age in 100 years time.' It was @lowcarbcomedy who did the maths and worked out that 'Alien Earth is set in 2120, so Ice Age would be 118 years old. The equivalent of someone today sitting down to watch George Méliès Ben Hur from 1907.' Perhaps @davidehrlich put it best, however, when he wrote: 'The Ice Age movies are significantly more important to the story of Alien: Earth than I would have imagined.' Set in 2120, two years before Ridley Scott's original 1979 film, Alien: Earth explores a terrifying future ruled by mega-corporations. It's a world where science, greed, and survival all collide. At the heart of the story is Wendy, a girl with a terminal illness whose mind is transferred into a synthetic adult body. She leads a group of hybrid synthetics, known as the Lost Boys, after a research vessel called Maginot crashes and unleashes a terrifying new alien threat on Earth. It's dark, dystopian, and completely gripping – and the internet is loving it. One fan, @supermang, wrote on X: 'I hope Alien: Earth leads to more horror franchises getting shows! So excited for the rest of this season!' Another, @sandeep_sanmayo, added: 'The scale, the atmosphere, the vfx omg they've created true masterpiece i would say.' And those kinds of reactions are everywhere right now. The Rotten Tomatoes score has already climbed to an impressive 93%, making it the third-highest rated entry in the entire Alien franchise. Only the original film and James Cameron's Aliens are rated higher. Critics have praised the show for its storytelling, its depth, and its ability to scare and provoke thought at the same time. Empire gave it a full five stars, calling it 'a rare prequel that enriches the original story rather than rehashing it.' Tom's Guide called it 'pure sci-fi goodness' and said it proves the Alien universe is far from dead. GamesRadar Plus said it's 'ferociously entertaining' and one of the most violent – and best – Alien stories since the 1986 classic. It's not just about the gore, though. Reviewers are highlighting the emotional weight of the show, especially in the relationship between Wendy and her brother Joe, a fellow synthetic. Metro's Deputy TV editor Tom Percival shares his thoughts on this out-of-this-world TV show after watching six episodes… Call me a contrarian because I'm about to drop a take hotter than a Xenomorph's acidic blood, but I don't really get what other critics see in Alien: Earth. It's by no means a bad show, but I found most of the characters unlikable, the plot involving the synths pretty dull, and the world incredibly dreary. That said, the production design is good, the practical Xenomorph is cool (I love a guy in a suit), and the new alien species are interesting enough (that eye guy creeps me out). Sadly, the series just didn't get its claws into me, and I'm not exactly (chest)bursting to watch the final two episodes… I'd rather watch Alien instead. Their bond gives the story a raw human core – even when surrounded by Xenomorphs and morally bankrupt CEOs. Timothy Olyphant's performance as Kirsh, the synthetic caretaker, has also drawn praise for its cold charisma. Meanwhile, Samuel Blenkin plays the ruthless Boy Kavalier – a young tech billionaire obsessed with consciousness and immortality – who may be even scarier than the aliens. The show also adds new types of monsters to the mix, expanding the Alien universe in ways fans didn't expect. It's creepy, clever, and packed with surprises that keep viewers guessing. And it's not afraid to go deep, exploring themes like identity, power, and what it really means to be human. Of course, not everyone is completely sold. Vulture said the show's ambition sometimes gets in the way of its emotional payoff, calling it 'fascinating but flawed.' The Guardian praised the chilling world-building but felt parts of the plot were a bit unclear. Still, most reviews are leaning strongly positive – and the buzz isn't slowing down. In fact, Alien: Earth already feels like a major comeback for the franchise. It blends the best of classic horror, new sci-fi, and serious storytelling in a way that feels fresh and unexpected. Showrunner Noah Hawley, known for Fargo and Legion, has been praised for balancing terror with thought-provoking ideas. More Trending With six episodes still to come, Alien: Earth looks set to be one of the most talked-about shows of the year. And if early reactions are anything to go by, it might even end up being one of the most beloved sci-fi series as of late. The first two episodes of Alien: Earth are available to stream on Disney Plus now. The original version of this story was published on August 13. Got a story? Darius Danesh's ex-wife speaks out after he died after refusing operation

Darius Danesh's ex-wife speaks out after he died after refusing operation Darius Campbell Danesh' ex-wife Natasha Henstridge has shared a heartfelt tribute to the singer on the third anniversary of his death Darius Campbell (formerly Danesh) who rose to fame after coming third in ITV's Pop Idol show and had number one hits in the UK with both his debut single and album. (Image: ITV/REX/Shutterstock) Darius Campbell Danesh's former wife has paid tribute to the late singer on the third anniversary of his death. The former Pop Idol star passed away suddenly at the age of 41 in August 2022 after inhaling chloroethane - also known as ethyl chloride - at his Minnesota flat. ‌ Three years after the tragedy, 50 year old Canadian actress Natasha Henstridge - who petitioned for divorce from the Colourblind singer in 2013, following just over two years of marriage - has confessed she still misses him deeply. Sharing a collection of photographs of Darius, including one showing the pair posing before the Eiffel Tower in Paris. ‌ She wrote on Instagram on August 11: "Love and light always. Miss you today.... Sending love to the Danesh's and everyone whose life he touched." ‌ According to his partner, Darius had been "living with a broken neck" and an undiagnosed cardiac condition when he passed away, reports the Mirror. Darius Danesh made his first appearance in Popstars but did not have any success (Image: ITV) Lauren Cheek revealed that a post-mortem examination showed his heart was "twice the size" it should have been and that she believes he used the recreational anaesthetic to ease his pain. Article continues below She told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "Darius was living with this heart condition that he didn't know he had. So many things could have taken him, but this one thing did, and he died in his sleep. "His mum told me they only found out after they did the autopsy. His heart was twice the size it was supposed to be, which was fitting, because that is genuinely how he was - he had so much love. "The autopsy also found he was living with a broken neck, but he refused to get help or complain about it. I think he used (chloroethane) because he was in so much pain and he didn't want to take pills, not even aspirin. That's what killed him - the substance mixed with his heart and he couldn't take it." ‌ Lauren continued by revealing that Darius - who rose to prominence after delivering an unforgettable performance of Britney Spears' chart-topper '...Baby One More Time' on the ITV talent programme Popstars before launching a series of successful singles and later starring in West End productions - had suffered his injuries during racing alongside Hollywood star Gerard Butler and consistently "refused" her pleas to seek medical attention. She continued: "He was with Gerry (Butler) in Monaco for the Grand Prix and they slammed into a wall during a race with the Prince of Monaco. I don't think it ever fully healed and then he rebroke it because he got hit by a car in London a year or two before he died when he was riding a bike. "And then he got into a car accident with his dad in Scotland. D was in the passenger seat, his dad was driving and someone drove into them. ‌ "He was always in pain and I would beg him to see the doctor, but he refused. He was trying to find a natural remedy." Declining surgery Darius had been struggling with severe neck pain following two separate motor vehicle collisions. The initial incident happened in Spain during 2010, leaving him with a fractured neck. ‌ In a previous interview with HELLO!, he revealed how he came within just 'three millimetres from death'. The performer had been enjoying a driving holiday with friends and was travelling on the motorway during scorching weather conditions. "Because of the haze, we didn't see that there was a diesel spill on the road. Before we could work out what was going on, it was already too late," he explained. ‌ "The car careered out of control on a bend, and we smashed into a wall at 70mph. My first recollection is my friend, the driver, asking if I was ok." He continued by describing how he recalled experiencing a "sharp pain" in his neck before losing consciousness. After the crash, Darius was reportedly presented with the option of neck surgery that could have been transformative, but the entertainer notably refused the treatment due to concerns it might affect his singing voice. Article continues below His discomfort progressively worsened over time, and a subsequent road traffic accident in 2021 further aggravated his condition. Rather than undergoing the operation, Darius allegedly managed the 'intense nerve pain' through cannabis, pain medication, and an anaesthetic substance, the last of which tragically led to 'respiratory arrest'.

New animatronic parasaurolophus and ankylosaurus models were popular additions to this year's seven-week attraction Thousands of dinosaurs hunters flocked to Lanark for a fifth successive summer for the town's annual Jurassic trail, with this year's visitors once again praising the fabulous family adventure. ‌ More than 6100 trail maps were distributed to guide children and families around the 25 animatronic installations and giant sculptures located in the town centre at at Castlebank Park – with visitors coming from from as far afield as Edinburgh, Stirling and Ayrshire for the annual fun festival. ‌ New additions of moving parasaurolophus and ankylosaurus models proved popular additions to this year's line-up, alongside returning firm favourites and a busy programme of events led by the Jurassic Lanark ranger team, including special fun weekends for the youngest visitors. ‌ Research by organisers Discover Lanark showed that 93 per cent of visitors rated the dino-mite experience 'very good', while nearly nine in 10 used the town's cafes and restaurants and 62 per cent spent money in local shops during their time in Lanark. There were 2400 entries to the free trail's prize draw, and nearly one in five of those who took part in the Jurassic Lanark trail during the dinosaurs' seven-week appearance were making their first visit to the town. Discover Lanark business improvement district manager Antonia Pompa said: 'We were really pleased with the feedback – there was a very positive atmosphere in the town and it was really lovely to see families going round with their maps. 'We always try to introduce new things so we had the animatronic ankylosaurus and parasaurolophus, and a large T-Rex head outside the Tolbooth, and then the models are moved around each year to create different scenes. ‌ 'They're in place in both the town centre and Castlebank Park, and families said how much they appreciated the park and all that they can do there as well as part of the experience. 'It's been great and it's been delightful to see families out together with their maps, whether it's children, parents or grandparents, and really enjoying the trail together over the summer.' ‌ The dinosaur-themed attractions also included appearances from popular event mascot Roary, plus Lanark memorial hall hosting the interactive Dinosaur Adventure to 'save Volcano Island from a jurassic storm'. Discover Lanark posted on Facebook as the seven-week extravaganza came to a close: 'A big thank you to everyone who has visited the town and supported the trail and our local businesses, and to everyone who has worked so hard to make it a success and all the town's businesses who have entered into the spirit of our dinosaur spectacular.' They received hundreds of appreciative comments from visitors and families, praising the 'brilliant' free event and the 'lovely atmosphere' in the town throughout the summer.
