Zandra Rhodes urges Kent youngsters to draw every day

BBC News12-03-2025
Kent-born fashion designer Zandra Rhodes is urging young people from the county to draw every day as part of a project to inspire local teenagers.Ms Rhodes, who has kept sketch books since she was at Medway College of Art in the 1960s, is making the plea as part of her Colourful Heritage project. The project aims to work alongside schools with 16 and 17-year-olds from socio-economically deprived backgrounds in the Medway area to inspire them and give them the opportunity to learn from Ms Rhodes' work. She said: "I have one rule, that I must do a drawing every day. That's why I encourage you to draw every day – it might be a vase of flowers you draw or a place you visit or a person you see."
Ms Rhodes said a key part of her sketch booking process was starting on page one and filling every page without ripping any out.She added: "Don't be digital all the time - do things with your hands and see where it leads you and the ideas that it might bring your way."The project is a partnership between the University for the Creative Arts and The Zandra Rhodes Foundation.

Great British Sewing Bee contestant forced to apologise after off-camera blunder

The Great British Sewing Bee was full of eventful moments on Tuesday's episode with an off-camera blunder and emotional scenes The Great British Sewing Bee delivered plenty of drama on Tuesday's instalment, featuring behind-the-scenes mishaps and tearjerking moments. ‌ During the 19 August episode, contestants faced "children's week", where they were tasked with creating garments for youngsters. ‌ The opening challenge required contestants to incorporate adaptive fashion elements whilst tackling a pattern for miniature dungarees. ‌ Following this, the transformation round saw participants reimagining maternity clothing into toddler ensembles. The final made-to-measure task challenged hopefuls to craft outfits inspired by their childhood career dreams, spanning everything from beekeeping to politics, reports Wales Online. Contestant Caz had aspired to become fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, one of the 1970s' most legendary style icons. Her tribute design featured fitted trousers and a peplum top with faux shirred detailing, completed with a coordinating beret. Paying homage to Zandra Rhodes, she selected striking fabrics and even enlisted her young model's help in creating the print. ‌ Watching her creation grace the runway, Caz was spotted dabbing away tears as she observed with evident pride. During the judges' critique, an overwhelmed Caz confessed: "I was wiping away tears while my model came down the catwalk, I'm just really pleased I turned up today." ‌ As the programme concluded, Caz found herself in floods of tears once more upon discovering she'd claimed garment of the week, exclaiming: "Wow!" Sadly, this meant one hopeful had to bid farewell to the contest, with Dan being the unlucky contestant sent packing, leaving his fellow competitors visibly upset. As the programme drew to a close, there were further dramatic moments to unfold. During a piece to camera with contestant Orla, who had harboured dreams of becoming a beekeeper in her youth and had crafted a themed ensemble for the task, she found herself having to make an apology following an off-screen mishap. ‌ The hopeful was clutching a plush bee toy whilst telling viewers: "Everyone's makes were just bee-utiful. I thought it was really fun" before hurling the cuddly creature out of shot. Unfortunately, the soft toy accidentally struck something or someone beyond the camera's view as a loud crash could be heard, prompting a startled Orla to erupt into giggles. The Great British Sewing Bee continues on Tuesdays at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Alex Scott flaunts her incredible figure in a tiny leopard print bikini as she packs on the PDA with girlfriend Jess Glynne amid romantic Greek getaway

Alex Scott flaunted her jaw-dropping figure in a skimpy leopard print bikini amid her romantic Greek getaway with girlfriend Jess Glynne on Saturday. The BBC sports presenter, 40, took to Instagram with snaps as she showcased her incredibly toned abs in the tiny two peace while soaking up the sun in Rhodes. Alex and Jess, 35, appeared more loved up than ever as they packed on the PDA during a lavish boat trip around the island. The lovebirds smooched while relaxing on fluffy towels with the broadcaster later showing off her dance moves. They sipped on wine and took in the sights on dry land including a trip for dinner at a eatery called 'Alex's Restaurant'. Alex captioned the post: 'Lil Postcard from Rhodes'. Alex and Jess began dating around October 2023. They kept their relationship private for months however, with Alex later admitting that they chose to do so because they knew it was 'special'. Writing in The Times, the BBC pundit opened up on her relationship, saying her and Jess are becoming the 'same person'. Detailing her daily routine, she wrote: 'I wake up next to my partner, Jess, who has become the same person as me over the past year and a half. 'She can see what going to the gym does for me mentally, so she'll do the same'. It was rumoured last month that the couple are considering moving across the pond to the United States. As reported by The Sun, Alex is said to be 'considering other offers' after experiencing a 'lack of support' with Football Focus on the BBC. The controversy came surrounding plummeting viewing figures, which left Alex reportedly feeling like she had been 'thrown under a bus' by the broadcaster. A source said: 'Last year [Alex] was hugely hurt by unfair criticism about falling viewing figures - and felt she was thrown under a bus. 'The viewing figures were not as reported. She feels no-one backed her up and issued the correct viewing figures.' The presenter's contract with the BBC is reported to be up for renewal this summer. Meanwhile Jess parted ways with her record label EMI last month after her April 2024 album, Jess, crashed out of the charts after just one week. A source told The Sun: 'Jess knows plenty about having massive hit singles, so there was a lot of excitement when she signed her deal with EMI Records. But it's not exactly been the fruitful relationship that either had hoped. 'The album didn't do as well as anyone wanted, and none of the singles even graced the Top 40 She's had a tough time reintroducing herself to the public after a few years away. Before adding: 'Both she and the label decided it was for the best to stop working together. But Jess isn't letting it dampen her spirits. She is already working on new music and is planning her next moves.'
