Thierry Henry calls out Mikel Arteta for his lack of trophies - as Arsenal legend makes stark comparison with Man United
Thierry Henry insists Mikel Arteta should be doing better with Arsenal and challenging more robustly for silverware.
The Gunners legend believes fans have a right to question the manager after three seasons of being second-best - and five without a proper trophy.
Arteta has restored Arsenal to the elite since taking over in December 2019 but has only lifted one competitive trophy - the FA Cup in that first season - and two Community Shields.
Their growing reputation as nearlymen has led to pundits piling the pressure on the Spaniard, with Paul Merson suggesting he could be sacked by Christmas if they are not in the hunt for the Premier League.
Now Henry has weighed in and made a pointed remark with Manchester United, who are still reaching and winning finals despite their almighty slump.
'I'm not saying that I'm disappointed with Arsenal, but it's normal that people are raising questions now about what the team is doing,' Henry told the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.
'I understand that at the very beginning [for Mikel Arteta] you arrive and it's not your team, you need at the very least three or four transfer windows to change everything that you want to.
'It takes time and you have to give a manager time to be able to implement what he wants to do.
'Now, for the last three years Arsenal have been in a situation where they should have at least brought one cup in or a final.
'Manchester United have played in five finals in the last five years, the United that everyone laughs at, whereas for Arsenal in the last three years of building, they've not reached a final.
'So, I do understand when people ask the question, "Surely you should compete for a trophy?"
There is little doubting Arteta's transformative effect on Arsenal and it is worth highlighting their plight before he came in.
The Gunners had finished outside the top four for three consecutive seasons when he came in but, after some teething issues, he has them back near the top.
Arteta has gutted the dressing room of problematic personalities and instilled the players with belief that they can compete for the highets honours.
Twice they have come close to winning the Premier League - last season they finished on 89 points, which would have been enough this time - and this campoaign they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League after thrashing Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate.
Amid some devastating injuries, they have retained their record as the side with the best defensive record for another season and played attractive football going forward.
But the truth stands that Man United, going through a downbeat era, have still won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in the last five seasons, also reaching another final of football's oldest competition and the last two of the Europa League twice.
Jamie Carragher also believes Arteta is under pressure to deliver another trinket.
'This season felt like it should have been their season,' the Liverpool icon recently told Sky Sports. 'There's no doubt next season that the pressure will be on Mikel Arteta massively in terms of winning something and winning something big.
'The Arsenal board, if they don't [win a major trophy], will have a massive issue because they won't want to change their manager, but there will be that many people saying: five or six years without a trophy.
'They will be looking at how many managers can make that next step.'

The Original Factory Shop launches closing down sale at yet another store – see full list of locations closing in June
THE Original Factory Shop has launched a closing down sale at yet another store. A branch in Heswall is the latest store to announce its closure, leaving shoppers heartbroken. 1 The Merseyside branch has launched closing down sale to help shift stock before it shutters for good. Shoppers have a chance to grab up to 70% off selected lines, and 50% off electrical products. The Henswell store opened two years ago in June 2023. The exact date the store is closing has not yet been confirmed but The Sun will update this piece when we hear more. Up to 11 TOFS stores are already to set to close this month, including sites across Worcestershire, Durham and Cumbria . Meanwhile, another five stores across Nairn, Market Drayton, Troon, Blairgowrie and Castle Douglas have been placed up for sale. The Original Factory Shop has told The Sun that negotiations are ongoing with landlords - making it unclear whether these shops will remain open. It comes as part of a major restructuring carried out by new owner Modella Capital with a number of loss making stores having to close as result. Over June nine of these stores will close, including sites in Dorest and Durham. Another site in Middlewich is also set to close however a date is yet to be confirmed. Private equity firm Modella bought The Original Factory Shop back in February and has since launched a restructuring effort to renegotiate rents at 88 TOFS stores. Modella is known for picking up struggling retailers, having also recently acquired Hobbycraft and WHSmith 's high street shops. It is set to rebrand all WHSmith high street stores to TGJones, and has brought in advisers to look at potential options for Hobbycraft. At the end of April, Modella drew up plans to initiate a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) for TOFS. Companies often use CVAs to prevent insolvency, which could otherwise result in store closures or the collapse of the entire business. They allow firms to explore different strategies such as negotiating reduced rent rates with landlords. TOFS previously told The Press and Journal that a "number of loss-making stores will have to close" as part of the restructuring. It said at the time: "Closing stores is always a tough decision and we are committed to keeping as many stores open as possible. And it is not only TOFS that is facing hard times. Hobbycraft is set to close nine stores come June 21. RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April. A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024. Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."

Arsenal learn updates on 3 transfer targets as Gyokeres makes controversial move
Arsenal have an important summer of transfer business to conduct and have yet to sign a player for Mikel Arteta as they look to go one place better in the Premier League The transfer window is just days away from opening for the second time this summer with Arsenal still looking to get a first deal over the line. June 16 will see the north London side able to register signings for Mikel Arteta. The Gunners have seen Kieran Tierney and Jorginho depart for pastures new and announced their released list but are still hard at work to secure Andre Berta's first signing. Thomas Partey's future remains more uncertain with his contract set to expire but the possibility of remaining at the Emirates still on the table. In terms of new arrivals, Arsenal want to bolster their forward line. Benjamin Sesko is the primary target up front who Berta is negotiating for. Sporting CP Viktor Gyokeres is another option, but one currently sparking controversy. Talk of blackmail and strikes have emerged from Portugal ahead of a pivotal summer for the player. Mirror Football takes a look at some of the latest transfer news and rumours around the Emirates. Sesko told to avoid transfer Slovenia boss Matjaz Kek has warned Benjamin Sesko to avoid a mega-money move to Saudi Arabia. The RB Leipzig forward has drawn interest from Arsenal, with the Gunners in talks over landing the striker this summer. "I would advise him never to go there," said Kek. "At least not at his age. This is a great recognition, these are clubs that mean a lot. "It's not that I underestimate the Saudi league, on the contrary, I worked there at Ittihad and the club is still a part of me, I also watch the league regularly, but the time will come for that. "I am sure that Benjamin himself and the people who care for him will be smart enough and find a solution. That is, he goes somewhere where he can play football, because that is the only way he can be happy." Rodrygo clarifies stance Rodrygo appears to have moved to clarify that he is happy at Real Madrid despite ongoing transfer links to Arsenal. The Brazil international is among the names on Andre Berta's summer shortlist, amid speculation he was not content at the Bernabeu. A deal requires the 24-year-old star to push for a transfer however. The attacker is set to feature for Los Blancos in the Club World Cup and faces no shortage of competition among Real's frontline options since the arrival of Kylian Mbappe. But it seems Rodrygo has attempted to play down any notion of discontent with a post on social media. On Instagram he posted: "Happy," accompanied by a smiley and white love heart emoji. The image on display showed Rodrygo in Real Madrid training. Perhaps an indication he is in no rush to move. Gyokeres 'to strike' Viktor Gyokeres has told Sporting CP chiefs that he is willing to go on strike after the club went back on an agreement with the Swedish striker, according to reports in Portugal. Gyokeres has been left furious after his current side raised his traansfer fee having already agreed that the 27-year-old would be allowed to leave for significantly less than his release clause. Sporting are still set to honour that but are now demanding £67m instead of £50million plus £8.4m in add-ons, per Record. Sporting have rejected that agreement was in place and the club's president, Frederico Varandas has hit back with a fiery response claiming he will not be blackmailed or threatened to do a deal.

Did ChatGPT get the spending review right? Treasury minister gives his verdict
The chief secretary to the Treasury has called the Sky News-Chat GPT spending review projection "pretty good" and scored it 70%. Darren Jones compared the real spending review, delivered by Rachel Reeves on Wednesday, and the Sky News AI (artificial intelligence) projection last week. Sky News took the Treasury's spring statement, past spending reviews, the 'main estimates' from the Treasury website, and the Institute for Fiscal Studies' projections, and put them into ChatGPT, asking it to calculate the winners and losers in the spending review. This was done 10 days ahead of the review - before several departments had agreed their budgets with the Treasury - on the basis of projections based on those public documents. It also comes amid a big debate kicked off by Sky News about the level of error of AI. The Sky News-AI projection correctly put defence and health as the biggest winners, the Foreign Office as the biggest loser, and identified many departments would lose out in real terms overall. It suggested the education budget would be smaller than it turned out, but correctly highlighted the challenges for departments like the Home Office and environment. Watch what happened with Sky's AI-generated spending review 1:31 Reviewing the exercise, the author of the real spending review told Sky News that this pioneering use of AI was "pretty, pretty good". He added: "I could be out of a job next time in 2027, which to be honest, it's not a bad idea given the process I've just had to go through." The Treasury made a number of accounting changes to so-called "mega projects" which AI could not have anticipated, and changed some of the numbers. 3:43 Asked to give it a score, Mr Jones replied: "I'm going to give it 70%." The spending review includes AI as a tool to save money in various government processes.
