'The Phoenician Scheme' Review: Benicio Del Toro Hilariously Dominates Wes Anderson's Latest All-Star Wes Anderson Movie - Cannes Film Festival
He travels to Brazil's northeastern port city of Recife during carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son but soon realizes that the city is far from being the non-violent refuge he seeks.
Like Walter Salles' recent Oscar winner I'm Still Here, the drama is set against the backdrop of Brazil's the military dictatorship, which lasted from 1964 to 1985. However, Filho, who hails from Recife, says his film takes a different approach to that period.
'Every time I told people the film would be set in 1977, the first word that comes out is 'dictatorship'. Which is fine, but in Brazilian cinema, and Argentinian cinema as well, there is a sub-genre of the dictatorship movie,' says Filho.
'The challenge was to make a film about the logic of that time without ticking all the boxes of the dictatorship movie. I'm not against those films. In fact, we just had a very strong and beautiful film in Brazilian cinema, I'm Still Here, by Walter Salles, which did wonders for many young people who were not even aware of that moment in history. But with this film, it's very much about the atmosphere, the fumes.'
The Brazilian, French, German and Netherlands Film is produced by Cinemascópio, MK Productions, Lemming Film, One Two Films. Paris-based mk2 films is handling international sales.

When is 'The Phoenician Scheme' coming to streaming? Here's our best guess
Director Wes Anderson's latest movie is "The Phoenician Scheme," a dark comedy about wealthy international businessman Zsa-Zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro). Having narrowly dodged an assassination attempt, Korda appoints his daughter Liesl (Mia Threapleton) sole heir to his estate and embarks on a new enterprise, which puts them in the crosshairs of more dangerous foes. Anderson's summer movie is composed as precisely as ever, and was reasonably well-received by plenty of critics and moviegoers. At the time of writing, it's Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 78% critics' rating and a slightly lower score (71%) from fans. In general, the consensus seems to be that "The Phoenician Scheme" is a typically stylish feature from the director, but it also isn't quite doing enough to stand alongside some of Anderson's absolute best movies. The movie first hit theaters at the end of May (with a nationwide release following one week later, on June 6), so we haven't gotten a confirmed streaming release date for "The Phoenician Scheme" just yet. Nevertheless, if you've decided not to see it in theaters and are waiting to watch it at home, here's our best guess at a potential "The Phoenician Scheme" streaming date. At the time of writing, the only way to watch "The Phoenician Scheme" is by seeing it in your local movie theater. Seeing as it only hit theaters at the end of May, that's probably going to be the only way to watch it for a little while yet, too. Plus, it won't come to streaming services straightaway, either; it'll first head to premium video-on-demand (PVOD) storefronts like Amazon. Nevertheless, since the movie was distributed in the U.S. by Focus Features (a Universal subsidiary), we can at least expect "The Phoenician Scheme" to make its streaming debut on Peacock. However, looking back at how long it's usually taken Focus Features' other releases to arrive on streaming, I'd wager "The Phoenician Scheme" could come to Peacock in mid to late July 2025. That's based on the fact that we typically wait between six to eight weeks for Focus Features films to start streaming. For example, "Black Bag" arrived on Peacock on May 2, seven weeks after it hit theaters, while survival thriller "Last Breath" came to the streamer on April 25, eight weeks after its February 28 theatrical debut. However, if "The Phoenician Scheme" instead follows the release pattern of the acclaimed comedy-drama "The Ballad of Wallis Island," we might have to wait a bit longer for a streaming date. Tom Basden's endearing watch just hit the streamer on June 6, 10 weeks after its limited theatrical release on March 28. Elizabeth Hurley Cast in 'Mischievous' Career-First Role and Fans Are Already 'Obsessed'
Elizabeth Hurley has landed a head-turning new gig! Marking her return to TV screens—her last TV show appearances included Runaways and The Royals from 2015 through 2019—the 59-year-old actress has been cast as 'The Deceseased,' a dead, glamorous benefactor in a gripping new series. Appearing in The Inheritance, which will air on the UK's Channel 4, it also marks her foray into a competition series that's described as very high-stakes. Per the synopsis, 'Thirteen strangers are summoned to a grand stately home. They are there to compete for part of the fortune left in the will of The Deceased.' It teases that 'winning the money won't be easy' as 'The Deceased had a wicked sense of humor and has designed a mischievous game to ensure only the best players can get their hands on her inheritance.' The executor and trusted legal counsel for Hurley's character, who will be keeping a "watchful eye," will be played by lawyer and British TV personality Robert Rinder. Contestants will have to work as a team to complete The Deceased's final request, including 'a series of devilishly difficult assignments that will demand they are clever, collaborative and cunning,' however, the twist is that only one player can claim the money gained in each request. Hurley released a statement calling it a 'thrill to be part of this clever game.' And fans shouldn't be surprised that the model will bring her A-game, noting, 'It all takes place on her huge estate in the English countryside, and she dresses to the nines in every scene.' Fans can also expect it to be as gripping and have the same allure as The Traitors, considering it hails from the same team, Studio Lambert. Steven Handley, Channel 4's Head of Reality & Entertainment, described the upcoming 12-episode show as "part Knives Out, part Succession", previously teasing the inclusion of "British icon" now revealed to be Hurley. 'The Inheritance isn't just a battle of strategy, alliances, and inevitable betrayals - it's a cocktail of drama, jeopardy, and outright mischief that Reality fans love. I can't wait to see how our players handle the challenges, the twists, and a few sneaky surprises, Handley revealed, per Deadline.
