
Why There's No Substitute For The Power Of In-Person Networking
There's no denying that we live in an increasingly digital age. For many, this has had a direct influence on how they approach networking. One need only look at the growth of LinkedIn, which now claims over 1 billion members in over 200 countries and territories.
Many professionals now use LinkedIn or other online resources as their primary networking method, whether they are joining industry groups, looking for jobs or reaching out to potential collaborators.
While such resources have definitely opened up new opportunities and connections for many, they are still no substitute for in-person networking. Quite frankly, in-person networking has key advantages that can never be fully replicated in a virtual space.
Online networking events have certainly come a long way, but they still tend to focus on efficiency rather than true opportunities for connection.
As Aneta Pawlik, marketing communications manager at Female Founders, writes, 'Online events are organized to accommodate presentations and question time – and they tend to strip the social parts because, historically, it has been very difficult to connect with other people during webinars or live streams. And let's be honest; we have all been part of events where other attendees are happily not turning their cameras on and staying silent in the chat. This attitude makes it difficult to truly build relationships with other participants or speakers compared to in-person interaction.'
As a result, online networking events often result in one-way communication rather than true connections. Networking through social media can take time due to delayed responses. On the other hand, in-person events allow for more spontaneous and natural conversation. Body language, tone and other factors enable more natural conversation that build rapport and make interactions more meaningful and memorable.
Because of this, in-person networking lets you demonstrate your authentic personality and expertise. Your demeanor during these conversations can create a lasting impression that builds trust and connection much quicker than if you were to connect exclusively online. Even if you don't immediately start doing business with someone, that in-person connection will help you remain in their memory for when they need to consider business partners in the future.
Another advantage of in-person networking events is that they often provide unexpected opportunities to connect with people you wouldn't have met otherwise. These unplanned interactions can sometimes lead to the most important partnerships and connections — whereas online, you are generally limited to connecting with the people you originally planned to connect with.
For example, Caribbean event-planning agency Mystique highlighted the power of in-person events through its work on the Jamaican premiere of the Paramount Pictures film 'Bob Marley: One Love.' The event brought together 900 VIP guests, including the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Ziggy Marley, Rita Marley and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. For the guests of this premiere, attending an in-person event provided the opportunity to meet actual royalty.
While you probably won't encounter royalty at your next industry-specific event, in-person networking opportunities can still provide chances to meet with similarly important people in your niche. You might bump into a presenter and get the chance to ask more in-depth questions about their area of expertise. You might meet a manager for a different company who is looking to partner with someone with your own skill set.
These spontaneous meetings can often be more worthwhile than planned activities and meet-ups, leading to lasting partnerships. On the other hand, simply attending an online webinar with little to no opportunity for interacting with other attendees will completely eliminate these kinds of opportunities. In that case, you aren't really networking at all, and potential partners may never even learn you exist.
Perhaps the most powerful advantage of in-person networking is that it is generally more likely to serve as a breeding ground for collaborating with others. As you connect with other businesses and individuals in a natural, in-person setting, these conversations that build rapport can also help you and others recognize common goals and interests.
Having time to talk together in-person can lead to more in-depth discussions where you share ideas and ways you can collaborate to make different projects a reality. And with in-person networking, it is much easier to find ways to continue the conversation even after the official portion of the event is over.
This isn't to say that online networking can't help you discover these opportunities as well. However, the inefficiencies of online networking can make it much harder to get to this point. Case in point: A study from the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found that making a request in person is 34 times more successful than making that same request via email — largely due to the emotions conveyed during in-person conversation.
Better communication is foundational for stronger collaboration, and in-person networking can lay the groundwork for these partnerships.
Digital networking opportunities are undeniably powerful, allowing collaborators who are geographically distant to work together effectively. But don't neglect in-person networking. Meeting and networking in-person can help you build rapport and trust, while also creating unexpected opportunities that wouldn't have been available through a digital event.
By strategically using in-person networking, you can create new connections that lead to even more powerful collaborations.

Tesla's Optimus robot VP is leaving the company
The head of Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot program, Milan Kovac, is leaving the company. Kovac said Friday in a post on X that he "had to make the most difficult decision" of his life to leave. "I've been far away from home for too long, and will need tos pend more time with family abroad," he wrote. Kovac said that was "the only reason" and that his support for Musk and Tesla is "ironclad." Kovac's departure was first reported Friday by Bloomberg News. The departure comes as Tesla CEO Elon Musk has claimed the company will have "thousands" of Optimus robots operating in its factories by the end of this year. "And we expect to scale Optimus up faster than any product, I think, in history, to get to millions of units per year as soon as possible," Musk said last month. Kovac worked at Tesla for nearly 10 years, with much of that time coming as a top engineer on the Autopilot team. He was tapped to help lead development of Optimus in 2022 and became a vice president overseeing the program in late 2024. "I'm driving the Optimus program (Tesla's humanoid robot) & all its engineering teams," Kovac previously wrote on his LinkedIn profile. "Separately, I'm also driving the engineering teams responsible for all the software foundations & infrastructure common between Optimus and Autopilot." Ashok Elluswamy, the vice president of Tesla's AI software division, will take over the Optimus project, according to Bloomberg. Experts offer advice to new college grads on entering the workforce in the age of AI
Futurist explains how AI will change the way we live and work New college graduates this year face an especially daunting task — putting their degrees to work just as "generative" artificial intelligence technology like ChatGPT is beginning to change the American workplace. "We are entering an entirely new economy, so the knowledge economy that we have been in for the last 50 years or so is on the way out, and a new economy is on the way in," Aneesh Raman, Chief Economic Opportunity Officer at LinkedIn, told CBS MoneyWatch. The impact of AI on Americans recently out of college is already visible across a range of industries and jobs, from technology and finance to media, legal fields and market research. As a result, for the first time unemployment among fresh grads recently surpassed the nation's overall jobless rate — a shift some experts attribute in part to the creeping influence of AI. "There are signs that entry-level positions are being displaced by artificial intelligence at higher rates than the roles above them," said Matthew Martin, senior U.S. economist at Oxford Economics. With the adoption of AI at work only expected to accelerate, we asked three experts across academia, recruitment and consulting for advice on how new college grads should navigate this new normal. Here's what they said. Become fluent in AI Perhaps most important, young job-seekers start using gen-AI tools — today. "Almost anybody in that audience, irrespective of the job that they're pursuing, will be expected to use AI with some facility right away," said Joseph Fuller, a professor at Harvard Business School and founder of the Managing the Future of Work project, comparing the task to learning how to use Microsoft Office for a previous generation of grads. To get the ball rolling, experts encourage those who are starting to hunt for work to familiarize themselves with the array of tools at their disposal, such as Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI's ChatGPT. That means learning how to engage with such tools beyond simply using them as a search engine. "You want to get in a dialogue with it," Fuller said. "You want to ask it to take different perspectives." Emily Rose McRae, an analyst at research and advisory firm Gartner, said learning how to use AI apps can also be a good way to develop transferable skills. For example, asking AI to summarize documents and then validating its findings to ensure accuracy. Meanwhile, although AI can be helpful when it comes time to filling out job applications, users should proceed with caution given that recruiters can often spot AI-generated language, experts note. Nearly two-thirds of job candidates today use AI at some point in the application process, according to a report from recruitment firm Career Group Companies. "If you're using it to write your cover letter and your resume and you did not review it, everyone can tell," McRae said. Another way to gain potentially valuable experience with AI, while also seeking work, is for interview practice. For example, users can ask the chatbot both to provide sample questions they might face in an interview and then rate the quality of their responses. "If you are using it as a tool to get your own understanding of self in interviews, you're going to start being leaps ahead of everyone else," Raman said. Hone your soft skills Experts say that as AI surpasses humans in executing certain tasks — think actuarial math or corporate compliance, for example —more attention will shift to job candidates' so-called soft skills, such as problem solving and communication. "You cannot outsource your thinking to AI," LinkedIn's Raman said. "You have to continue to hone critical thinking and complex strategy thinking." The focus will be less on your pedigree — where you went to school or even whether you have a college degree — he added, and more on what he calls the "5 Cs": curiosity, compassion, creativity, courage and communication. To improve their soft skills, Fuller encourages entry-level job candidates to work on turning what they regard as their biggest weakness into a strength. For instance, if you typically shy away from public speaking or talking in groups, push yourself to get comfortable in those situations. "The inability to do that is going to be penalized more severely in the work of the future than it has been in the past," he said. The Harvard professor also suggested highlighting examples of advanced social skills directly on your resume to help paint a picture for recruiters of how you can contribute to the workplace. Choose your employer wisely Beyond skills development, experts say college grads should be thoughtful about the type of company they choose to work at, knowing that AI could drastically alter the business in the coming years. "The most important thing, if you're a new grad, is where you work — not what you do at the place you're going to work," Raman told CBS MoneyWatch. He encouraged college graduates to seek out employers that are integrating AI responsibly and with respect for their workforce — as opposed to embracing it chiefly to replace people. Companies that are adapting to what is a major technological shift in real time will typically offer the best opportunities for learning and growth, Fuller said. In evaluating a prospective employer, young job candidates should try to gain an understanding of how they fit into the company's future. For example, McRae recommends asking hiring managers up front what types of investments the organization is making in its employees and what the room for growth looks like. "What are they telling me they care about? What do career paths look like for this role like now? How do you help people develop the skills they need to become experts?" she said. In researching companies, McRae also encouraged recent college grads to look for places that offer apprenticeship or rotational programs, which can offer ways to quickly ramp up their knowledge base, especially if traditional entry-level roles are in short supply.

OpenAI CMO to Take Leave Following Breast Cancer Diagnosis
OpenAI Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Kate Rouch will take a three-month medical leave after announcing today that she has been undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer since shortly after joining OpenAI in December. In a LinkedIn post, Rouch said her prognosis is excellent and that she plans to fully focus on healing. She added that Meta's former CMO, Gary Briggs, will serve as interim head of marketing during her leave. "Earlier this year-just weeks into my dream job-I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. We moved to SF on days' notice for treatment, arriving Super Bowl Sunday," Rouch wrote. "For the past five months, I've been undergoing chemo at UCSF while leading our marketing team. It's been the hardest season of life-for me, my husband, and our two young kids." OpenAI Hires Instacart CEO Fidji Simo as Head of Applications Rouch joined OpenAI in December after serving as Coinbase's CMO. Prior to that she spent over a decade at Meta, rising to vice president and global head of brand and product marketing, where she led marketing for the company's core platforms-including Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facebook-and worked alongside Briggs. "Silicon Valley can be sharp-edged-fast, competitive, transactional. But getting sick revealed something deeper," Rouch wrote. "We're not cogs in the same machine-we're waves from the same sea."
