Zayn Malik praised for calling out 'isolating' racism he experienced in One Dire

Metro5 days ago
It's almost been 15 years since One Direction formed, and Zayn Malik has taken shots at the racism he faced at the boy band's dizzying heights.
Zayn's complex history with the band is no secret but his new song Fuchsia Sea points at a wider struggle with fame as the only non-white band member.
On March 25, 2015, the Night Changes hitmaker announced he was exiting One Direction for good, devastating the millions of fans and shocking his bandmates.
In the decade since, the now 32-year-old singer has seemingly softened on his feelings towards the band — even opening his sold-out arena show with a 1D song.
However, his new song brings that complicated history back to the surface as he raps about being 'laughed at' as 'the Asian'.
Zayn was the only non-white member of the boy band, which included Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and the late Liam Payne. https://www.instagram.com/p/DLtdGXKsq44/
In his new track, which he teased was 'coming soon' on Instagram, Zayn rapped: 'Got my back against the wall so much they think I got a brick fascination / Do you remember every conversation? 'Cause I have been conscious of every connotation.
'And while they concentrate on their elevation, I've got a round trip to the constellation / I'm a convert to the concert, and I did that for inflation, 'cause I worked hard in a White band, and they still laughed at the Asian.'
He later shared a full verse on his story, which referenced his family and how they 'dreamed hard' for a better life in the UK.
Fans quickly shared their support for Zayn on social media, recalling incidents of racist attacks on the Kiss You hitmaker.
On X, heartweirdo wrote: 'Zayn was literally branded a ter*orist at 17. He twted a simple Arabic prayer & got called a jihadi. He posted 'Eid Mubarak' & white fans told him to stop pushing Islam.
'He was constantly exoticised only praised when he looked 'less brown,' mocked when he looked 'too Muslim.''
90sbrutalia added: 'I'm soo proud of zayn for publicly acknowledging the racism/islamophobia he's faced, specifically from what must've been an extremely isolating experience as the ONLY poc in a white band.
'The amount of ppl acting clueless and asking what brought this on as if zayn wasn't barraged with hundreds of disgusting islamophobic comments over a goddamn selfie last month.'
Katneptune_ said: 'Zayn's always been proud and vocal about his background, even back then, but this feels like the first time he's explicitly and publicly acknowledged being the only poc in the band & how differently he was treated bc of it. even when interviewers asked uncomfortable or racially.'
Since his One Direction exit, Zayn has focused on his personal life and largely stayed out of the spotlight except for big announcements.

At the time of his exit, he said he wanted to 'relax' and live the life of a normal 22-year-old but has since confessed that this wasn't the whole truth.
On the Call Her Daddy podcast in 2023, he revealed that the band were just 'sick' of each other at that point, and he decided to get out first. More Trending
However, over the years, Zayn's feelings towards the group have softened, especially after the shock death of Payne last year.
The Pillowtalk singer posted an emotional tribute to his former bandmate, acknowledging their differences but saying he would miss him.
Then, months later, Zayn sang Night Changes on tour, which originally charted in the UK Top 10 but became particularly poignant after Payne's death and re-entered the charts at number six last year.
Payne tragically died at the age of 31 on October 16 after falling from a hotel balcony while abroad.

Rita Ora admits she 'still feels Liam Payne' months after star's tragic death

Rita Ora said she keeps Liam Payne's memory alive through music - especially their song For You - as she described the late singer as 'a really great friend' of hers Rita Ora has said she "still feels" Liam Payne nine months after the One Direction star tragically died in Argentina. The 34-year-old singer said Liam was "a really great friend" of hers, and added she now always sings their song For You "all the time" which helps her keep his memory alive. Rita addressed her friendship with the late singer during an appearance on Elvis Duran and the Morning Show. ‌ In her interview, she was asked whether she will watch Building the Band, a new Netflix show - Liam's final project - which wrapped filming shortly before he passed away. The first four episodes premiered on Netflix on July 9, with three more episodes due to drop next week. ‌ The final three episodes will hit the streamer on July 23. Elvis, hosting the iHeart Radio show, asked Rita if she is planning to watch the show, to which she replied: "I 100% will watch it." She then shared some details on her friendship with Liam, saying: "That's a really great friend of mine. I still sort of feel him anyway, so it's fine." She then added: "I have the last song that I think we did together as a duo and I sing it all the time. And it just feels like he's just right there. And we always do a cute little moment of a photo of him and it feels fantastic to just feel like he's still around through music." ‌ Rita said: "That's why music is so powerful. It really does bring back a person, a memory, a feeling." She continued: "So yeah, I have this incredible memory with him, with For You, our song together, and I'll always have that." One month after Liam's death, Rita hosted the MTV EMA and paid a special tribute to her friend. Fighting back tears, she emotionally said to the cameras: "I just want to take a moment to remember someone that was very, very dear to us. ‌ "We lost him recently, and he was a big part of the MTV world and my world, and I think a lot of yours at home and everybody in here tonight. Liam Payne was one of the kindest people that I knew. "And, you know, there were so many ways that we were talking about honouring him, and I think sometimes just simply speaking is enough." Dressed in a dark suit, in a poignant moment that contrasted the rest of the upbeat night, Rita continued: "He had the biggest heart, he was always the first person to offer help in any way that he could. He put so much joy into every room he walked in. And he left such a mark on this world. So let's just take a moment to remember our friend." Prior to Rita hosting the EMAs, a source told The Sun that the British singer would want to be involved in MTV's plans to commemorate Liam on the show. Touching on their friendship, they said: "She and Liam have been close for years and grew in the industry together. Obviously, she is devastated by his passing."

Smitten Zara McDermott shows her support for boyfriend Louis Tomlinson as sings along at his concert in Zurich

showed her support for Louis Tomlinson as she was spotted at his concert in Zurich. The Love Island star, 28, and former One Direction member, 33, are believed to have started dating in March. On Friday, she proved their relationship is going from strength to strength as she was seen enjoying his gig in the Swiss city. In a TikTok video shared by user @katiexstyles, Zara could be seen singing and dancing along to one of Louis' songs from a private box. Dressed in a simple white crop top, the reality star appeared in great spirits as she joined in with the crowd's excitement. It comes just weeks after Zara was spotted dancing with Louis in the crowd at Worthy Farm during Sketpa's set at Glastonbury. Louis could be seen with his arms wrapped around Zara who flopped her head back onto his shoulder while enjoying the music. A fellow festival-goer captioned the post: 'Glastonbury is mad because you can be dancing to Skepta and boom Louis Tomlinson is next to you.' Others couldn't get over the couple's kooky PDA and rushed to the comments: 'Literally is Zara well in this? LOL': 'It's so funny'. In an interview before she travelled to Somerset for the festival, Zara also broke her silence on her split from Sam Thompson, 32. The couple, who featured on Made In Chelsea together, had enjoyed a five-year relationship before calling time on their romance in January. Zara made headlines after swiftly moving on with One Direction star Louis, with the pair spotted enjoying a date together in early March. Their romance continued to blossom as they jetted off on holiday together, before Louis and Zara's ex Sam came face-to-face for the first time at Soccer Aid last month. A seemingly awkward interaction ensued, with Louis reportedly blanking Sam following the match at Old Trafford despite holding 'peace talks' at the team hotel earlier. The woman at the centre of the drama was however nowhere to be seen, with Zara later admitting the reaction to her love life has been 'frustrating'. She told The Sun: 'The only thing in my life worth writing about is the work I do.' The star also revealed that, despite still posting glamorous snaps to Instagram, she no longer spends much time on social media and is more grounded in her 'relationships'. 'I don't care about social media as much as I used to, or about the aesthetic or the image, I value so much real relationships and real support around me, and being that to other people,' she added. 'I'm a totally different person to the one I was when I was 21 years old and stepped into what appeared to be a glitzy world of showbiz, my day to day life is not at all glitz and glamour.' Zara and Louis have since seemingly gone from strength to strength, with the couple pictured looking smitten during their Glastonbury weekend. Zara certainly got the family seal of approval as she was snapped cuddling up to Louis's sister Lottie. Their relationship has the added strength of the blessing of his make-up artist sibling Lottie, 26, with whom he has a close bond. Taking to Instagram, Lottie shared a plethora of snaps from her time at the festival at Worthy Farm, which she enjoyed with Louis, Zara and fiancé Lewis Burton. Proving she was accepting of her brother's new romance, Lottie snuggled in close to Zara, who wrapped an arm around her waist, as they posed in the field together. Fans were quick to take to the comments to share their excitement over the seemingly newfound friendship between Zara and her boyfriend's sister. They penned: 'YOU AND ZARA OMG'; 'You and Zara are my favorite duo!' 'Nice when your siblings and partners get along so well'
