Sarawak gathers gov't agencies, industry players for next leap in semiconductors
SMD, in a statement, said the one-day workshop brings together federal and state ministries, government agencies, local universities, training centres and industry players to accelerate Sarawak's development into a cutting-edge semiconductor hub.
Jointly organised by the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Sarawak Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), this initiative seeks to translate strategic vision into concrete actions and measurable outcomes, with a strong focus on Sarawak's future generation and economic resilience.
The workshop follows the launch of the Sarawak Semiconductor Strategic Framework and the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030, officiated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in April this year.
SMD chief executive officer Shariman Jamil will lead the session with an exclusive presentation of the roadmap, outlining ten strategic steps to build a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem in Sarawak by 2030.
'This bottom-up approach has been our longstanding practice, ensuring our framework truly reflects industry needs – locally and globally – and unlocks opportunities for Sarawakians.
'This syndication will turn vision into reality, fuelling Sarawak's journey toward becoming the Silicon Nerve Centre of Asia. It's not just ambition. It's happening – and we want everyone to be part of it,' Shariman said in the same statement.
Participants are expected to contribute to formulating coordinated strategies that align Sarawak's efforts with national and international objectives. The session's outcomes and strategic recommendations will be formally presented to Abang Johari. — BERNAMA

Water and energy are Malaysia's edge in global tech race, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said Malaysia's abundance of water and energy resources has made the country an attractive destination for data centre, semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) investors. For that reason, Anwar said the water and energy portfolios were placed under Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof as they are 'too strategic for the country'. 'If we ask investors, their first two reasons are usually water and energy, and professional workforce is only the third reason. 'We cannot defend our credibility as a peaceful and competent country if we cannot resolve basic issues such as energy and water,' he said at the official launch of the Langat 2 water treatment plant (LRA) at Hulu Langat, Selangor today. The prime minister also stressed the need to upgrade old pipes to reduce non-revenue water and prepare for droughts by exploring modern, water-efficient technologies. Constructed to meet rising demand in the Klang Valley, the Langat 2 water treatment plant can now treat up to 1,130 million litres of water per day (MLD) from Sungai Semantan in Pahang. The raw water is channelled from Sungai Semantan through a 44.6-kilometre tunnel across the Titiwangsa Range to Hulu Langat. The Langat 2 facility will supply treated water to the Western Corridor (KL City Centre, South KL, Petaling, Sungai Besi, Kinrara and Puchong) and the Northern Corridor (Ampang, North KL from Wangsa Maju to Maluri, Keramat and Gombak). The RM4.2 billion project was funded and developed by Pengurusan Aset Air Bhd (PAAB). The plant is equipped with modern technologies including the Granular Activated Carbon double filtration system, a lamella clarifier inclined plate settler, and real-time monitoring through the supervisory control and data acquisition system. It also incorporates environmentally friendly processes such as static mixing, zero discharge, and hosts Malaysia's first and longest pipe conveyor system for water treatment residual. Fadillah, who was also present at the launch, said Malaysia's water supply access stood at 97 per cent in 2024 while the water reserve margin in the peninsula and Labuan was at a satisfactory 14.9 per cent. He added that Malaysia aims to develop local water technologies that meet international standards under the Water Sector Transformation Plan 2040, as well as explore the use of recycled water for non-food industries.

Teach AI in schools to future-proof workforce, says Sarawak Minister
KUCHING: The Education Ministry should consider introducing artificial intelligence (AI) into the school syllabus to provide early exposure to the subject, says Datuk Seri Roland Sagah. The Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister said it was important for school children to learn about AI from young to be digitally ready for the future. He said this was in line with Sarawak's policy of preparing its workforce to take up opportunities in new sectors like green technology and renewable energy under the state's post-Covid development strategy (PCDS). "Students must learn about AI from the beginning, so it's for the Education Ministry to consider introducing the subject," he told reporters after opening a programme on AI-driven talent development here on Wednesday (Aug 20). Sagah also said ethical considerations must be included in any AI subject to prevent its abuse. "AI must be ethically exercised so that there will be no decadence in society. The more we know about AI, the more we will know how to prevent this," he said. In his speech earlier, Sagah said AI-enabled workforce strategies would help Sarawak to achieve the PCDS goals of creating 195,000 new job opportunities in high-skill and high-value sectors, raising the median monthly household income from RM4,544 to RM15,047 by 2030 and increasing the skilled workforce share to 30%. He said the goals required a workforce that was digitally-ready, innovative and globally competitive. "When integrated into our workforce planning, AI can identify emerging skill demands faster than traditional systems, personalise training pathways to accelerate competency building and enhance productivity and innovation across every sector. "By embedding AI in talent strategies, we are equipping Sarawakians not only to fill jobs but to create them," he said.

Sarawak's internet coverage increased to 91.93% under Jendela, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak's internet connectivity has reached 91.93% as of July 2025, a significant improvement compared to 73.67% in 2020, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the progress was driven by the implementation of the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela), which has expanded access across the state, particularly in rural constituencies such as Saratok. "At the national level, internet coverage in populated areas now stands at 98.82%, up from 91.8% before Jendela was launched in 2020. "For Sarawak, the figure has risen to 91.93%, while Saratok alone has recorded 94.82% compared to only 59.07% before Jendela," Fahmi said in a parliamentary written reply on Tuesday (Aug 19). He said under Jendela, Sarawak recorded the largest number of newly built communication towers nationwide, with 892 out of 910 towers already completed and operational. In addition, 4,665 out of 4,728 transmitters have been upgraded, fibre-optic coverage has been extended to 183,417 premises, and all 523 targeted locations are now connected via satellite-based Broadband Wireless Access. For Saratok, he said 21 new communication towers have been built, all 91 transmitters upgraded, fibre-optic connections made available to 4,716 premises, and 10 locations connected through Broadband Wireless Access services. Fahmi added that the remaining initiatives are expected to be completed in phases by the end of 2025. The minister also noted that Jendela Phase 2 will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2025 to further address gaps in rural connectivity, including through the construction of additional towers and satellite-based solutions. "Close collaboration between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the Sarawak government, and agencies such as the Sarawak Multimedia Authority and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation will ensure inclusive digital access for all Sarawakians," he said. Beyond Jendela, he said the Sarawak government has also introduced the SMART 600 initiative, aimed at constructing 600 new communication towers across the state. As of July 2025, 431 towers have been completed, with 169 still under development, he added.
