KUCHING (Aug 5): Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor will showcase several key innovations, including the Power Converter Prototype, at the upcoming Microelectronics United Kingdom 2025. Chief executive officer Shariman Jamil said the Microelectronics UK 2025 is one of Europe's premier platforms for semiconductor and electronics innovation. The event will be held on Sept 24 and 25 at the Exhibition Centre (ExCel) London in the United Kingdom (UK). 'The Power Converter Prototype is a revolutionary innovation chip developed in collaboration with Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult (CSA Catapult). 'The prototype was first unveiled during a partnership ceremony in Wales, officiated by the Premier of Sarawak last April,' he said in a statement today. The statement was issued after he recently led a SMD delegation on a courtesy call to British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ajay Sharma, in Kuala Lumpur. Shariman said the meeting with the British High Commissioner was to explore long-term collaboration with UK partners in the semiconductor and microelectronics sectors. He added the meeting highlighted SMD's strategic commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in innovation, technology exchange, and the development of advanced semiconductor capabilities. A key topic of the discussion was SMD's collaboration with the UK's CSA Catapult, along with the development of a new AI chip integration, chiplet and heterogeneous integration. 'These initiatives mark significant steps forward in advancing high-performance chip design and applications for global markets,' he said Shariman also said the engagement reflects the deepening ties between Sarawak and the UK, united by a shared ambition to lead in semiconductor innovation. 'We are deeply honoured by the support extended by His Excellency Mr Ajay Sharma. This visit marks an important milestone as we work towards unlocking greater opportunities with UK partners, while positioning Sarawak on the global map of advanced chip design,' he added. During their meeting, Shariman also shared Sarawak's Semiconductor Roadmap 2030 – Beyond Moore's Law – and briefed the High Commissioner on SMD's upcoming participation in Microelectronics UK 2025. Meanwhile, Ajay in his remarks expressed his strong support for the growing engagement between Sarawak and the UK in the field of semiconductors and advanced technologies. 'This mutually beneficial collaboration reflects our shared commitment to fostering innovation, enhancing trade relationships and supporting sustainable development. I strongly welcome initiatives like these and look forward to developing further our dialogue and partnership in areas of mutual interest,' he said in the statement.

Sarawak Gathers Govt Agencies, Industry Players For Next Leap In Semiconductors

KUCHING, July 19 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor will host the Sarawak Semiconductor Syndication Session on July 21 here. SMD, in a statement, said the one-day workshop brings together federal and state ministries, government agencies, local universities, training centres and industry players to accelerate Sarawak's development into a cutting-edge semiconductor hub. Jointly organised by the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Sarawak Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), this initiative seeks to translate strategic vision into concrete actions and measurable outcomes, with a strong focus on Sarawak's future generation and economic resilience. The workshop follows the launch of the Sarawak Semiconductor Strategic Framework and the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030, officiated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in April this year. SMD chief executive officer Shariman Jamil will lead the session with an exclusive presentation of the roadmap, outlining ten strategic steps to build a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem in Sarawak by 2030. 'This bottom-up approach has been our longstanding practice, ensuring our framework truly reflects industry needs - locally and globally - and unlocks opportunities for Sarawakians. 'This syndication will turn vision into reality, fuelling Sarawak's journey toward becoming the Silicon Nerve Centre of Asia. It's not just ambition. It's happening - and we want everyone to be part of it,' Shariman said in the same statement. Participants are expected to contribute to formulating coordinated strategies that align Sarawak's efforts with national and international objectives. The session's outcomes and strategic recommendations will be formally presented to Abang Johari. -- BERNAMA

SMD launches contest to tap Sarawakian talent in IC design

KUCHING: Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor has launched the Inaugural SMD IC Design Competition 2025 to nurture local talent in integrated circuit (IC) design and position Sarawak as an emerging player in the global semiconductor industry. In a statement, SMD said the competition kicked off with a five-day bootcamp held recently at the SMD Academy in Kota Samarahan, involving eight teams representing Curtin University Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, University of Technology Sarawak and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak. 'Over the course of 14 months, teams will design, fabricate (tape-out) and test ICs that meet high standards of performance and energy efficiency,' the statement said. The competition is supported by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak and aligns with the state's Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030, which aims to build a skilled, innovation-driven workforce. Chief executive officer Shariman Jamil said the initiative reflects confidence in the intelligence found in Sarawak, particularly among the untapped potential of its youth and their ability to shape the future of technology. 'We are proud to work alongside our foundry partner X-Fab Sarawak, for the chip fabrication, and we appreciate the generous support of MEITD in empowering the next generation of IC designers,' he said. Throughout the competition, teams will progress through multiple evaluation phases, focusing on design methodology, performance, layout quality and testing outcomes. Top-performing teams will be recognised at an awards ceremony in June 2026, reinforcing the development of a strong talent pipeline for Sarawak's semiconductor ecosystem. Incorporated in September 2022, SMD is a wholly owned company of the Sarawak government through the State Financial Secretary Incorporation. It serves as the state's boutique fabless chip design house, specialising in designing analogue and mixed signal integrated circuits or chips. Its mission is to design sustainable, future-defining semiconductors and transform Sarawak into the silicon nerve centre of Asia.
