Sarawak Gathers Govt Agencies, Industry Players For Next Leap In Semiconductors
SMD, in a statement, said the one-day workshop brings together federal and state ministries, government agencies, local universities, training centres and industry players to accelerate Sarawak's development into a cutting-edge semiconductor hub.
Jointly organised by the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Sarawak Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), this initiative seeks to translate strategic vision into concrete actions and measurable outcomes, with a strong focus on Sarawak's future generation and economic resilience.
The workshop follows the launch of the Sarawak Semiconductor Strategic Framework and the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030, officiated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in April this year.
SMD chief executive officer Shariman Jamil will lead the session with an exclusive presentation of the roadmap, outlining ten strategic steps to build a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem in Sarawak by 2030.
'This bottom-up approach has been our longstanding practice, ensuring our framework truly reflects industry needs - locally and globally - and unlocks opportunities for Sarawakians.
'This syndication will turn vision into reality, fuelling Sarawak's journey toward becoming the Silicon Nerve Centre of Asia. It's not just ambition. It's happening - and we want everyone to be part of it,' Shariman said in the same statement.
Participants are expected to contribute to formulating coordinated strategies that align Sarawak's efforts with national and international objectives. The session's outcomes and strategic recommendations will be formally presented to Abang Johari.

Chong slams Sarawak govt's new RM10 bln airport plan as wasteful
Chong says the massive expenditure would be better used to uplift the 'world-class living standard' of Sarawakians, rather than investing in a 'world-class' building that showcases state wealth. KUCHING (Aug 20): The Sarawak government's proposal to construct a new airport – estimated to cost over RM10 billion – is a misplaced priority that does not align with the actual needs of the people, said Democratic Action Party Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen. The Stampin MP and Padungan assemblyman said the massive expenditure would be better used to uplift the 'world-class living standard' of Sarawakians, rather than investing in a 'world-class' building that showcases state wealth. 'When many of our fellow Sarawakians are still living from hand to mouth, and businesses are struggling to survive, it is a misplaced priority on the part of the state government,' said Chong in a statement today. Chong questioned the necessity of building a new airport, pointing out that the current Kuching International Airport (KIA) is significantly underutilised. He highlighted that the KIA runway, measuring 3,780 metres, nearly as long as Kuala Lumpur International Airport's 4,000-metre runway, is already capable of handling large aircraft such as Boeing 747/777 and Airbus A380-800. He added that it has been nearly 20 years since the new KIA runway was completed in 2006, and yet the state government still could not attract enough passenger traffic to warrant regular long-haul international flights. Chong proposed that expanding the existing terminal would be sufficient to accommodate future passenger growth. Instead of grand infrastructure, he urged the state government to prioritise 'real issues' including, repairing broken drains and upgrading infrastructure, installing street lights in housing and commercial areas, providing digitalisation grants to small and microbusinesses, offering bursaries for tertiary students, and supporting healthcare expenses for the underprivileged. 'My advice to the state government – use our wealth for the people, not to flaunt with mega projects,' Chong added. Chong Chieng Jen Kuching International Airport misplaced priority

Govt Supports High Impact R&D Investment, To Empower Industry Competitiveness
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The government agrees with the view that there is a need to increase investment in the country's research and development (R&D), especially in competitive R&D activities that focus on the industrial sector. Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Lih Kang said this is because one of the main challenges facing the country at present is the existing R&D capabilities that are still not able to generate high returns on investment. "The average R&D is currently in the pre-commercialisation phase and needs to be driven to a higher phase that is closer to commercialisation," he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) motion for the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) in the Dewan Rakyat today. He said this in response to the proposal by Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) for the country's R&D investment to be increased. To overcome these constraints, Chang said the government saw great potential through regional technology development and ASEAN efforts through ASEAN Startup, which was seen as capable of attracting more regional technology talents to open businesses in Malaysia, thus increasing the country's R&D competitiveness. Based on data, he said investment in experimental R&D increased to 60.97 per cent in 2022, but only 0.3 per cent of business enterprises invested in R&D activities. He said this showed that the private sector was still less active in R&D investment and special incentives needed to be created to stimulate their interest. 'Within the context of MOSTI's jurisdiction, various measures have been implemented, including implementing the Malaysia Science Endowment (MSE) to develop alternative financing that leverages the collaboration of various parties. 'In addition, the implementation of a mission-based initiative, namely the Mission Oriented Initiative, to unify the entire research, development, innovation, commercialisation agenda under a strategic mission that is clearly directed and centred on solutions to critical issues at the national level,' he said.
