Muar hosts national month launch, honouring Johor's patriotic contributions
Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi described the launch in Muar as "no coincidence," noting that the district was the cradle of the country's independence movement.
"This is not merely a launch venue. It is a symbol of honour, a tribute to Johor's deep-rooted spirit of patriotism and nationhood," Onn Hafiz said in his speech today.
Held at Dataran Tanjung Emas, the event was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Also present was Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Onn Hafiz expressed gratitude to the prime minister and federal administration for choosing Johor, saying the decision reflected mutual trust and a renewed synergy between federal and state governments.
In his speech, he welcomed key federal announcements, including the RM100 SARA aid for 22 million adults, the new RM1,700 minimum wage, reduced RON95 petrol prices, and the expansion of Rahmah Madani sales, calling them concrete steps towards easing the people's burden and realising true independence.
"Real freedom isn't just about being rid of colonisers. It means escaping poverty, coping with living costs, and living with dignity in our own land," he said, adding that the theme Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni (Protecting the People's Welfare) resonates strongly with Johoreans.
Citing recent data, Onn Hafiz revealed that Johor secured RM30.1 billion in approved investments in Q1 2025 alone, a significant jump from the previous year.
"The state's gross domestic product grew by 6.4 per cent last year, surpassing the national average.
"These are not just numbers. They reflect Johor's status as not only the economic driver of the south, but one of the key engines of national growth," he said.
He expressed confidence that continued collaboration with the federal government would further strengthen Johor's path towards becoming a progressive and compassionate state.
Calling for a renewed spirit of national unity, Onn Hafiz urged Malaysians not to let the Jalur Gemilang remain a mere ornament.
"Let it live in our hearts as a symbol of struggle, freedom, and dignity. And fly the Johor flag with pride, because this is where our strength began," he said.
He reminded the people that the current generation bears the responsibility to preserve and uplift the legacy left by those who fought for independence.
"Let Johor not only be a state that develops, but one that unites. Let it not just be advanced, but honourable."

Unlicensed Trader Jailed 20 Years, Fined RM9 Million For Defrauding
The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court has sentenced Mohd Azhidi Laili to 20 years' imprisonment and a RM9 million fine for unlicensed trading and derivatives fraud involving a fake crude palm oil futures investment scheme. In a statement, the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) said Azhidi, who posed as a licensed futures trader, cheated nine victims of RM1.45 million between May 2013 and March 2014. He pleaded guilty to nine charges under Section 206(b) of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 (CMSA) and one charge under Section 59(1) for acting without a licence. 'The outcome reflects the seriousness of the offences and their impact on the capital market,' the SC said, adding that the case underscores the importance of protecting investors from fraudulent schemes. SC shared that Azhidi received two years' jail and a RM1 million fine for each charge, with prison terms to run concurrently. Failure to pay the fines will result in an additional 27 months in prison. The commission reminded the public to remain vigilant and verify the legitimacy of any investment offers before committing funds.

Police investigations free from political interference, says home minister
In April, Sin Chew Daily courted controversy for publishing an illustration featuring the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon, leading to a police investigation. PETALING JAYA : Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail says police investigations are free from political interference, including in its probe against editors of a Chinese daily over the incorrect depiction of the Jalur Gemilang. Saifuddin said that police had investigated two Sin Chew Daily editors under Section 3(1)(c) of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963; Section 4(1)(b) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984; and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Section 3(1)(c) deals with the use of an emblem without the permission of the minister, while Section 4(1)(b) deals with producing publications that cause hostility, enmity, hatred, disharmony or disunity. Section 233 deals with improper use of network facilities. 'The police carry out their duties professionally, independently without any political interference, at all times,' he said in a written parliamentary reply. Saifuddin said this in response to Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) who wanted to know why the two editors were remanded over the gaffe but no arrests were made for a similar blunder by a PAS politician and the education ministry. Lim had questioned the alleged double standards in the investigations. In April, Sin Chew courted controversy for publishing an illustration featuring the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon, leading to a police investigation. Its two top editors were subsequently detained. The daily swiftly apologised for the 'technical mistake' and suspended its chief editor and deputy chief sub-editor pending the outcome of the investigation. A week after Sin Chew's snafu, the education ministry had to apologise for a mistake in the design of the Jalur Gemilang printed in its Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results analysis report. The report contained an image of a Jalur Gemilang with two stars, instead of one, hanging on a classroom wall. The flag had eight alternating red and white stripes instead of 14. In May, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan acknowledged the incident involving the logo for the Himpunan Teguh Memimpin Terengganu (TMT 1.0) 2025, which depicted an incomplete national flag with incorrect star points and stripes. He then called for a thorough investigation and firm action over the blunder.

Slim River toll plaza reborn as thriving Agrobazaar hub
TANJONG MALIM: The former Slim River toll plaza has been revitalised as Medan Agrobazaar Tol Lama, serving as a key agricultural marketing hub for Muallim district and nearby regions. Since its launch in February, the agrobazaar has generated RM25,700 in sales, offering fresh produce and agro-based food products. Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli stated that four local entrepreneurs currently operate daily at the site. 'We aim to establish this as a central hub for agricultural produce from Muallim, Batang Padang, and Hulu Bernam, distributing goods nationwide,' he said during the launch event. The agrobazaar specialises in fresh fruits, young coconuts, juices, and agri-based food products from local producers. Behrang assemblyman Salina Samsudin, FAMA director-general Abd Rashid Bahri, and Muallim District Officer Mohd Sabli Bakri attended the launch. Aminuddin highlighted the agrobazaar's role as a permanent sales point for Rebung MADANI, fresh bamboo shoots harvested by villagers and Orang Asli. Over 11,493 jars of bamboo shoots have been sold under the 'Produk Tol Lama Slim River' brand, recently showcased in Singapore. 'We sold 200 jars in Singapore, proving demand extends beyond Malaysia,' he said, emphasising the site's strategic location for distribution. The agrobazaar also supports the Santuni MADANI Programme, enhancing rural economic potential through community engagement. This initiative aligns with Agro MADANI's goals of market stability, fair pricing, and inclusive participation in agriculture. - Bernama
