Indian box office records strongest month of 2025 with Rs 1,430 crore in July

The Indian box office recorded gross collections of Rs 1,430 crore in July, making it the strongest month of the year so far, according to data from Ormax Media. The growth was led by two major titles, the Hindi film Saiyaara and the multi-lingual animated feature Mahavatar Narsimha. Together, the two films contributed nearly half of the month's total earnings, making July the highest-grossing month of 2025 so far. The strong showing has reinforced the positive trajectory for the year. Cumulative collections from January to July have reached Rs 7,175 crore, 22% higher than the same period last year. At this pace, 2025 is on course to cross Rs 12,000 crore in annual collections. If it does, it could surpass the record set in 2023, when the domestic box office grossed Rs 12,226 crore. Saiyaara emerged as the top film of July with collections of Rs 392 crore. This places it as the second-highest earner of the year to date, behind Chhaava. The film benefited from strong reviews, audience word of mouth and a successful music album, all of which contributed to steady box office traction. The second-biggest success of the month was Mahavatar Narsimha, which grossed ?259 crore. About 75% of its domestic earnings came from the Hindi version, reflecting the growing appeal of pan-India animated films among Hindi-speaking audiences. Hollywood titles also continued to perform well in the Indian market. Three releases, Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman and The Fantastic Four: The First Steps, featured in July's top 10 list. Their combined success pushed Hollywood's share of the Indian box office to 12% for the January to July period. This is at par with the share in 2022 and higher than the 9% in 2023 and 8% in 2024. Regional industries showed mixed results in July. Kannada cinema saw a notable rise, with the horror-comedy Su From So helping the industry's share move above 2% from less than 1% in June. Malayalam films, however, saw their share decline from 10% in June to 8% in July. Tamil and Telugu releases contributed consistently but did not produce a major hit during the month. Hindi films continue to dominate the box office, with five titles among the year's top 10 so far, excluding multi-lingual productions such as Mahavatar Narsimha. The industry's recovery has been supported by rising footfalls, higher average ticket prices and the continued preference of audiences for large-scale theatrical releases. With several high-profile titles lined up across Hindi, regional and Hollywood segments, trade expectations remain positive for the remainder of the year.

Coolie Extended Week 1 India Box Office Estimates: Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj's crime-drama grosses an average Rs 261 crore in 8 days

Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth, fell flat at the box office after its extended opening weekend at the India box office, where it shattered all existing Kollywood records. After packing an India weekend in the range of Rs 220 crore, the movie started falling freely, to a point where the day 8 estimated collections are Rs 5.50 crore. Coolie Adds Around Rs 5.50 Crore On Day 8, To End Extended Week 1 Grossing Rs 261 Crore Coolie 's total collections after its extended week 1 stand at Rs 261 crore, and a lifetime of Rs 300 crore seems almost impossible. With a good word of mouth, the movie could have broken past the Rs 400 crore India gross mark with ease, but that has not happened. Coolie has shown what mixed to negative word of mouth can do to your film. The Day Wise India Box Office Collection of Coolie is as follows: Day Gross Thursday Rs. 75.50 cr. Friday Rs. 63.00 cr. Saturday Rs. 46.25 cr. Sunday Rs. 40.50 cr. Monday Rs. 13.00 cr. Tuesday Rs. 10.00 cr. Wednesday Rs. 7.25 cr. Thursday Rs 5.50 cr. (est) Total Rs. 261 cr. gross in 8 days Coolie Looks To End Its Global Run Under Rs 500 Crore Worldwide The collections of Coolie from the overseas box office also leave a lot left to be desired. The movie, after a record opening of USD 8 million and an exceptional weekend of USD 16.75 million, looked set for a finish in the north of USD 25 million. But the frequent drops over the weekdays, have put, even a finish of USD 20 million in jeopardy. A film that was expected to be an all time record Kollywood grosser at the worldwide box office, will end as the 5th or 6th highest grossing film, only due to the word of mouth. Coolie should be a lesson for Kollywood filmmakers, about the extent to which their movie can be affected if it gets underwhelming word of mouth. If collections are seen standalone, a Tamil movie ending up doing over Rs 450 crore worldwide is no small feat. But when you realise that the distributors purchased the film for a ratio of Rs 600 crore, you realise that the movie has severely underperformed. Coolie In Theatres
