Global media measurement company Nielsen has evolved its presence in India from a Global Capability Centre (GCC) into a Global Innovation Centre (GIC), playing an increasingly active role in product development and innovation, according to a senior executive.Anil Goel, Chief Technology Officer at Nielsen, said the transition reflects a broader shift in the company's identity—from a traditional data and analytics firm to a more technology-led media company.Nielsen's early operations in India were shaped by acquisitions such as Repucom, a sports research firm in Bengaluru, and a Gracenote-affiliated company in Mumbai. These brought in around 2,000 employees, largely focused on support and analytics functions.This began to change in 2024, when Nielsen added 3,000 new roles in India, mainly in technology, product, and data science. The company now employs nearly 5,000 people in India, with about half working on innovation-related functions.'So previously, teams in India mainly supported products led by the US or Europe, handling only parts of them, while most employees worked in other functions. Today, many product, innovation, and research decisions are driven from India—though we still maintain strong innovation hubs in the US, Europe, and elsewhere,' Goel said.The shift to a GIC model is being driven by both strategic intent and local opportunity. Goel noted that India offers a deep talent pool—comparable to Silicon Valley—and the ability to scale operations effectively.He also highlighted India's diversity—across languages, mobile devices, and bandwidth—as a key advantage for product testing.'India presents a unique opportunity because of its diversity—in languages, mobile devices, and bandwidth—which is greater than in most countries. So, when products are developed and tested in India first, they tend to perform exceptionally well globally,' he added.Nielsen is currently developing digital measurement tools AI-powered insights , and big data platforms out of India—many of which are designed for use in global markets.This change aligns with wider industry trends. As audiences move from traditional television to streaming and mobile platforms, media measurement has become significantly more complex.Nielsen now processes over 100 terabytes of data daily, using AI and machine learning models to analyse and forecast audience behaviour across fragmented platforms.India has become a key contributor to this innovation drive. Local teams are involved in areas such as sound engineering, Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), artificial intelligence, large language models (LLMs), and cross-platform audience tracking through products like Nielsen One.To support this shift, Nielsen has expanded its offices in Bengaluru and Mumbai, where the majority of its 5,000 employees are based. It also operates satellite tech hubs in Gurugram and Hyderabad.In 2025, the company plans to recruit a further 1,000 people in India, focusing on engineering, AI, data science, and hardware or firmware development.'We're competing for talent with some of the biggest tech brands,' Goel said. 'But we offer work with real impact on the global media landscape.'Looking ahead, Nielsen plans to invest further in AI, predictive analytics, and media planning tools to help advertisers and content creators make faster, data-driven decisions.The company is also open to acquisitions in emerging areas such as retail media, the creator economy, and in-game advertising.'We are no longer just a technology-enabled company,' said Goel. 'Today, technology is at the core of who we are.'

ED conducts searches in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana in alleged ₹190 crore bank loan fraud
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on June 5 conducted searches at 10 locations in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana in relation to an alleged ₹ 190 crore bank loan fraud, PTI reported citing official sources. Besides the national capital, the search locations in UP included Noida and Ghaziabad, and Panipat in Haryana, according to the report. The searches are part of a money laundering investigation linked to Shri Sidhdata Ispat Private Limited and others in which Bank of Baroda (former Dena Bank) is claimed to have been defrauded, the officials told PTI. The 10 locations 'are linked to the directors, promoters, partners, auditors, and other conspirators associated with the company which is being investigated in a ₹ 190 crore worth alleged bank loan fraud case', they added. The company under scrutiny, Shri Sidhdata Ispat manufacturers cold and hold rolled steel products. The report added that promoters could not be contacted immediately for a comment on the ED action against them. Earlier the ED on May 16 arrested former UCO Bank chairman Subodh Kumar Goel from his Delhi residence for alleged money laundering. This is in relation to an alleged bank loan fraud case of over ₹ 6,200 crore linked to a Kolkata-based company, according to another PTI report. Premises linked to Goel and some other were raided by the ED in April, as part of the investigation against Concast Steel & Power Ltd. (CSPL) and others in an alleged bank fraud case, the PTI report added. The charges comes from an FIR from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) related to the sanction of credit facilities to CSPL and subsequent large-scale 'diversion' and 'siphoning' of loans amounting to ₹ 6,210.72 crore (principle amount without interest).

US-based firms keen to set shops in state: Govt
US Consul General Katherine Giles-Diaz on Wednesday met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna, the state secretariat. According to officials in the government, the meeting was on a proposed semiconductor manufacturing unit in West Bengal. According to the government officials, Santech Global Inc, with headquarters in New Jersey, USA, has expressed interest in setting up a semiconductor project in Kolkata. 'Santech Global Inc is a global leader in high-tech innovation, specialising in emerging technologies like semiconductor, nanoelectronics, etc. We are in consultation with the company to extend the required support. We hope all these will contribute to a robust semiconductor ecosystem in West Bengal and a shared vision for technological advancement and open up many more economic opportunities for our state, particularly in terms of creating meaningful employment for the youth of West Bengal,' a release issued by the government read. The government also said that the Global Foundries, another US-based company, was going to establish a fab-less centre for design, testing at Kolkata Power Centre. 'They may expand to fabrication later. We have already provided them space. They got possession of a floor of about 13 thousand sq. ft. at Software Technology Park of India (STPI) IT park at Sector V, Salt Lake. Another space of around 19 thousand sqft has been requested by Global Foundries in the same premises of STPI. This is under process,' the government release said. 'We are also interested in setting up a power electronics ecosystem, and for this we are working with Global Foundries, Startup, Academia, and industry,' it added. The government is also working with Global Foundries and universities for a joint internship program for students of West Bengal. 'The Global Capability Centre Policy (GCC policy) for the state of West Bengal is being formulated and the consultation process is going on,' it added. Residents seek measures to expedite road cuts for resolving civic problems
: Owing to frequent disruption of power supply in zones such as Sholinganallur, where roads are being dug up for laying underground drainage network, residents have demanded faster processing of requests for road cuts to prevent a delay in restoration of services. V. Parthiban, general secretary of the Confederation of Residents' Welfare Associations, Sholinganallur, demands that civic agencies find a solution to prevent such delay in road cuts. Around 50% of the civic issues that require road cuts in various zones of the Chennai Corporation are related to electricity, water, and sewage, according to data complied by the GCC. Though a large number of service departments, more than 20 in number, carry out road cuts for resolving civic issues and implementing infrastructure projects, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board alone accounts for around 25% of them, and Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), more than 25%. Residents have urged the civic agencies to develop a system to expedite road cuts. 'When there is disruption of power or water supply, we request officials to give permission for road cuts instantly, without any delay,' they say. A. Francis, president of the Federation of Thoraipakkam Residents' Welfare Associations, said work on digging a cement concrete road, which was laid only a few months ago, is under way. 'The residents want the dug-up roads to be restored immediately. But this has not always been the case. There has been a delay in the restoration of the new road after the sewer network was built. We request that a new system be formed for improved coordination between all the line agencies,' he said. AIADMK councillor J. John said, in the past, the AIADMK government had initiated work to build sewer network in close proximity to all houses so that sewer connection could be established without digging up roads. 'The scheme to provide connection to all houses should be strengthened, similar to that of the previous regime,' he said. DMK councillor T.V. Shemmozhi said residents had demanded permission for road cut along Anna Nagar Second Avenue to resolve a sewage-related civic issue in the area. Following an overwhelming demand from residents in various parts of the city, the Chennai Corporation has proposed to expedite the work, and introduce a seamless system for granting permission for road cuts. An official said the new system would be implemented in one or two days, and the guidelines issued shortly. 'We have decided to expedite approvals for pending road cuts across the city. The online system will be altered. Under the new system, the residents will be able to raise claim charges after applying for Metrowater connection. Additionally, the No Objection Certificate from the traffic police can be obtained online,' another official said. At a meeting attended by more than 20 service departments on Tuesday, GCC officials decided to take measures to resolve issues with the departments. On the CMWSSB work under way in zones such as Manali, Madhavaram, Sholinganallur, and Perungudi, an official said they would expedite the road cut and restoration work.
