The racy pocket novel that entertained multitudes

The Hindu27-04-2025
In this age of digital content and books on Kindle, spending recreational time is rather easy. But there was a phase in the Madras of the 1980s and 1990s, when dipping into a tiny physical book was the norm. It was practical and, to use an Indian-English expression, a good time-pass! These Tamil novels would literally fit into a shirt pocket. However, because of the length they could jut out a bit; still, portability was easy. And it wasn't rocket science for these books to be called 'pocket novels'. The ease of accessing these little tomes was akin to holding on to a tabloid like a Mid-Day or The Afternoon Despatch & Courier in a packed suburban train in Mumbai.
Rooted in mystery
There were a group of writers who excelled in the craft of churning out pocket novels. Rajesh Kumar, Subha (a single name for the creative partnership between two authors, D. Suresh and A.N. Balakrishnan), Pattukottai Prabhakar, and many others were popular. Often the tenor of these books would be centred around a mystery. Murders and robberies were the spine and the perpetrators would be hunted down by the protagonists. Rajesh, for instance, leant on his lead pair of Vivek and Rubella, a detective couple.
Vivek was in the Sherlock Holmes mode, while Rubella played the Watson persona, asking questions, and through the answers she ferreted, the readers gained clarity. A bus or train journey into the hinterland meant that these novels were deemed essential. If Tinkle was a favourite in childhood, adolescence meant a diversion towards these racy novels in the vernacular. Nearly all of them were well written, had a descriptive air, and every chapter concluded with a hook that left you seeking the next. It is like the trope you get in television serials these days but without the bulging eyes and excessive background score.
Social commentary
These books were not just whodunits; there was social commentary, too, and an awareness of how Madras was expanding. Some of these authors provided source-material for films. Often strung around in the neighbourhood vethilapakku kadai (corner shop), these books did not cost much and offered an afternoon of reading pleasure. They still exist, gathering dust, as readership has declined. Look around magazine corners to spot these pocket novels. And for those who cannot read Tamil, there is always the Blaft Anthology of Tamil Pulp Fiction in English to savour. It will transport you back to an era when there were instant thrills nestling within rustling pages.

‘Class and decency aren't his strengths,' ‘Always resort to personal attacks': Kaneria slams Pakistan teammate Afridi, backs Irfan Pathan

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has voiced his support for ex-India cricketer Irfan Pathan when he opened up on his heated exchange with former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi. The all-rounder from Baroda divulged that Afridi often tried to provoke him with sharp remarks and personal comments while highlighting some of the intense moments they shared both on and off the field. Coming in Irfan's support is Afridi's teammate in the Pakistan cricket team, Kaneria, who said Afridi has always resorted to 'personal attacks' and that 'class and decency are not his strengths'. 'Irfan bhai, you're absolutely right. He always resorts to personal attacks, be it on someone's family or their religion. Class and decency clearly aren't his strengths,' Kaneria posted on X, formerly Twitter. Earlier, Pathan narrated an incident from the 2006 Pakistan tour, when both the Indian and Pakistani teams were flying together from Karachi to Lahore. 'During the 2006 tour, we were flying from Karachi to Lahore. Both teams were travelling together. Afridi came and put his hand on my head and messed up my hair. He asked me, 'How are you kid?'' Pathan recalled during the interview with Lallantop. 'I thought since when did you become my father. He behaved like a child. I was neither talking to him nor saying anything. After this Afridi said some bad things to me. His seat was near mine.' Irfan explained how he responded, which silenced Afridi for the rest of the flight. 'Pakistan allrounder Abdul Razzaq was sitting with me then. I asked him what kind of meat is available here. He told me meat of different animals are available. After this I asked whether dog meat is available. Razzaq was surprised to hear me and said, 'Hey Irfan why are you saying this?' To this, Pathan replied: ''He (Afridi) has eaten dog meat, he has been barking for so long'. 'After this Afridi could not say anything. If he said anything I would have said look he is barking more,' recalled Pathan with a chuckle.

Coolie Day 5 India Box Office Estimates: Rajinikanth's crime-drama falters on 1st Monday after record extended Kollywood opening weekend

Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth, had a record Kollywood opening weekend of Rs 227.25 crore. Not just that, it also took a record Kollywood global opening of Rs 375 crore. While the weekend was record-breaking, the numbers were slightly under expectations, given how big the movie opened. Based on the opening day, the weekend numbers should have been close to Rs 250 crore in India and over Rs 400 crore worldwide. Coolie Falters On 1st Monday By Grossing Just Rs 12 Crore The mixed word of mouth took a toll on the Lokesh Kanagaraj movie. After the already slumping weekend trend, the movie grossed just Rs 12 crore on day 6. The numbers are 80 percent down from Independence Day Friday and that's alarming. If the movie continues to drop like this, a Rs 300 crore gross India final can be a struggle. Also, that would mean that a Rs 500 crore gross worldwide finish would become impossible, as the highest that Coolie can do at the international box office based on its current trend is USD 21 million (Rs 183 crore gross). The collections in Tamil Nadu will likely end under that of Good Bad Ugly. The collections in Kerala shall end up being half of what Jailer did in 2023. The film's exceptional Karnataka and APTS collections over the opening weekend should ensure that the film breaks even or atleast comes very close to it. The Day Wise India Gross Collections Of Coolie Are As Under Day India Gross Collections Thursday Rs 75.50 crore Friday Rs 63.25 crore Saturday Rs 47 crore Sunday Rs 41.50 crore Monday Rs 12 crore Total Rs 239.25 crore gross in 5 days Coolie Will End Up As One Of The Top 5 Highest Grossing Kollywood Movies Worldwide But The Final Result Will Be Seen As Underwhelming Coolie, despite putting up record-breaking initial collections and being a film that will surely be a part of the top 5 highest grossing Tamil movies at the worldwide box office, will be seen as an underwhelmer because the expectations were of a record grosser. The Tamil industry will have to wait for Jailer 2 or Jana Nayagan to really see its potential unleashed again.

Priyanka Chopra Drops Emotional Post On 16 Yrs Of Kaminey; Vishal Bhardwaj Asks 'Ab Bhi Naraaz Ho?'

Last Updated: Director Vishal Bhardwaj, who helmed Kaminey, reshared Priyanka's post on Instagram with an emotional tribute. Priyanka Chopra Jonas has built an extraordinary career across Bollywood and Hollywood, yet Indian audiences still long for her return to Hindi cinema. After making her mark in films like Fashion, Barfi! and Bajirao Mastani, Priyanka expanded into Hollywood, winning global recognition through projects like Quantico and Citadel. While she continues to dominate on the international stage, her absence from Bollywood is strongly felt. Recently, PeeCee gave fans a nostalgic treat by sharing snippets from her 2009 cult classic Kaminey. The post, which featured Shahid Kapoor as Guddu and Priyanka as Sweety Bhope, marked the film's 16-year anniversary. Priyanka recalled being offered the role while shooting Dostana in Miami. She revealed: 'I remember him telling me the story and I said, 'Well, she has approximately 8 scenes.' And he said, 'With us working on it, it will end up being so much more. Trust me.' And I did. He promised he would make something incredible for me after this in appreciation for doing the part. But honestly, I was just greedy to work with him. A few years later, we did 7 Khoon Maaf." Vishal Bhardwaj's Emotional Note for Priyanka Chopra Director Vishal Bhardwaj, who helmed Kaminey, reshared Priyanka's post on Instagram with an emotional tribute. He wrote: 'Ask me how much I miss those days. You have been one of the finest collaborations of my career. Remember one day, when you got angry, I handwrote a poem on a napkin and sent it to manaoo you. 'Doosri jangaleedam ko khatam huye bhi beetein saal. Ab bhi kuch Japani afsar chhupien mile hain duty par. Tum se kab ab milna hoga.. Kya ab bhi naraaz ho tum?'" Responding warmly, Priyanka replied, 'Hahaha aapse kaun naraaz reh sakta hai? Aaiye milne." The heartwarming exchange between the actor and director set social media abuzz, with fans celebrating their bond and demanding more collaborations in the future. Fans Urge Priyanka to Return to Bollywood Under the post, fans expressed how deeply they miss Priyanka's presence in Hindi films. One user commented, 'Watching these snippets just makes us realise what Bollywood is missing out on. The way it's been feeding us mediocrity left right and centre these days. Laut aao PC! 😢" Another wrote, 'Probably one of the finest actress and till today I see so many movies and feel Priyanka would have nailed it in that particular role." The nostalgia-filled moment has only intensified anticipation for Priyanka's much-awaited comeback. If social media is anything to go by, her return to Bollywood will be welcomed with overwhelming love and excitement.
