Russell Martin tells mum he's okay amid Rangers criticism

Saturday's 4-2 victory over League One minnows Alloa hardly set pulses racing either.
However, Martin has guided the club to within just 180 minutes of the league phase of the Champions League.
Rangers host Club Brugge in the first leg of their UCL play-off tomorrow night, with the return leg in Belgium next midweek.
So, while it's been far from plain sailing for the 39-year-old, he knows that brighter times could lie ahead in the near future.
"A lot of people have messaged me who have read message boards and stuff, who are concerned about me," Martin told the media. "They just don't have to be.
"I keep telling my mum 'Don't worry about it, it's all good, I'm enjoying it'.

"I appreciate the honour of managing this club every day and the gratitude I feel for that. So, let's have that in the building.
"I said to the staff the other day that so many of them support the club, but I think they've lost a bit of joy or being here and working here.
"So, let's get back here and understand how brilliant it could be, and focus on what we can control and that is playing with so much energy tomorrow and really feed off it."

Paraag Marathe teases Rangers transfer timeline as signing rush predicted in 'last few days of the window'

It's a big night for the American who has a unique dual role as chairman at Leeds and vice-chairman at Ibrox Mischievous Paraag Marathe teased plenty of 'activity' in the closing days and weeks of the transfer window. ‌ And while the Leeds chairman was primarily talking about what's to come at the Elland Road club, it was a not-so-subtle indication that things are set to ramp up at Rangers too. ‌ It's a big night for the American who has a unique dual role as chairman at Leeds and vice-chairman at Ibrox, and after months of Rangers being at the top of his agenda, the real stuff starts for the Yorkshire club tonight when they face Everton in the Premier League curtain-raiser. ‌ Marathe and the San Francisco 49ers-backed ownership group have brought Leeds from the doldrums of the Championship back to the big time and, having spent £70m on eight new players already, he was asked in an interview on Sky Sports what he's planning for the rest of the window. And his response indicated there's plenty to be expected – at both clubs under his stewardship. He said: "History shows there's always a lot of activity in the last few weeks of the window, certainly the last few days of the window. We'll exercise every day that we can. "I can't speak for other American owners, I can only speak for myself. I've been in sports for almost three decades now. I love winning, I hate to lose, that's what drives me. "I don't think about the commercial side of it, I think about making this club as successful on the pitch as it can be. ‌ "It matters to me. There's no hours in a day or weeks in a year that limit me, it's win or go home. And I just want to do everything I can to get this club as good as it can be." Friendship on hold as managers vie for Champions League spot

Club Brugge head coach Nicky Hayen says he has a "good connection" with Rangers counterpart Russell Martin. But any friendship is likely to be put on hold during their forthcoming Champions League play-off sides meet at Ibrox on Tuesday night in the first leg with the return the following Wednesday in Belgium."I like Russell very much," Hayen, 45, told BBC Scotland. "I was in Haverfordwest County when he was in Swansea. We met each other because of Gary Richards (his former assistant at Haverfordwest who previously worked at Swansea).""I wanted to visit Swansea for two days. He allowed it. But we never found the right date. The year after, we arranged a friendly game between the two teams. The game was scheduled. Then I left the club to come to Brugge."Hayen revealed the pair exchanged regular text messages, although they actually only met in person for the first time when Brugge played Rangers this summer in a friendly at Ibrox."We spoke a lot," said Hayen. "We texted a lot. We stayed always in touch. But of course, tomorrow this doesn't count."He's a great manager. If you see the results that he got in Swansea and Southampton. It's a nice step for him over here. Of course, there's a lot of pressure. But I'm sure that he will deal with it."Club Brugge beat Salzburg to reach the play-off round. And, after making it to the round of 16 in last season's competition, Hayen is keen to progress to the league phase again this term."The team who is the best in keeping the ball, progressing, use the spaces, they will have a good chance to win the game," added Hayen.
