Chloe Kelly was ready to quit football seven months ago, now she's England saviour

Telegraph24-07-2025
It is approaching 10pm on January 30 and Chloe Kelly is about to take an almighty risk.
Frozen out by Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor, Kelly had started just one Women's Super League match and made a total of six appearances in the 2024-25 season. She desperately wanted to leave the club, whether it be on loan or permanently, in search of regular football. But she was running out of time.
City were digging their heels in, reluctant to let her leave to join a rival. So Kelly took matters into her own hands. On the eve of transfer deadline day, she wrote a message on social media in which she said her mental well-being was suffering and that she would no longer tolerate someone's 'negative behaviour' towards her.
The impact was far greater than perhaps Kelly had even imagined. Not only did she receive support from club and international team-mates, Kelly's status as a Euro 2022 hero meant celebrities like rapper AJ Tracey and radio DJ Greg James waded in.
There was plenty of interest in Kelly, who had only six months remaining on her City contract. Manchester United and Brighton both wanted her on loan with a view to a permanent move. The latter had an offer accepted but United was Kelly's preferred destination. City were adamant they would not do business with their city rivals or a club competing with them for Champions League football. But they were also aware of the possible PR disaster should a move not materialise.
As the hours ticked by on deadline day, Arsenal threw their hat in the ring with a loan offer that bettered everyone else's. City reluctantly accepted and, just minutes before the window shut, Kelly rejoined the club at which she had started her career.
When she secured that deadline day move, in a further twist, Kelly went on social media again to accuse City of trying to 'assassinate' her character with 'false accusations'.
Sliding doors moment
Had the move to Arsenal not gone through, Kelly was ready to take a break from football. She would not have been on the pitch to help England through both their quarter-final with Sweden and their semi-final against Italy. The Lionesses would have been out of this tournament over a week ago.
There could not have been more pressure attached to her penalty in the quarter-final shoot-out with Sweden. She had to score to keep the Lionesses in the tournament – she did so emphatically. She may have missed the extra-time spot-kick against Italy but her quick reaction to score the rebound was testament to her determination.

'The moments in January when I felt like giving up football, makes you so grateful for these moments here today,' Kelly said after the semi-final.
'It makes you enjoy every minute of that. Confidence comes from within but from around you as well. The players I stand side-by-side with on the pitch breed confidence in each other. But I think a lot is self-taught.'
How did Kelly get to the point where she considered quitting the game she loves? Her departure from City had been a long time coming. Her relationship with former manager Taylor had broken down beyond rebuilding. It is understood cracks appeared after Kelly scored the winning goal in Euro 2022.
She entered this season in the final year of her contract and with little progress over a new deal. In November, England manager Sarina Wiegman admitted Kelly's lack of game time was a concern and made it clear to the forward that she needed to play to ensure a place in her squad for the Euros.
Comeback queen
Joining Arsenal was only one part of the comeback. Kelly was not match fit and she was ineligible for Arsenal's next two fixtures – an FA Cup match and a WSL game against City – so she had to wait three weeks before making her debut.
That meant Kelly's name was not included when Wiegman named her squad for February's Nations League fixtures with Portugal and Spain. As it happened, an injury to Beth Mead meant Kelly was recalled a few days later but the message from Wiegman was clear: start playing regularly or risk not making the Euros squad.
When Kelly left City she said she just wanted to be happy again. Under the guidance of Arsenal manager Renee Slegers, Kelly not only rediscovered that happiness but became a European champion. She played a key role in Arsenal's run to the Champions League final, making a pivotal difference in their 3-2 comeback against Real Madrid. She also started the 1-0 win over Barcelona in the final.
Slegers gave Kelly belief again. She told her to be all the things she had struggled to be at City in the last two years. Kelly is something of a throwback as a wide forward. She likes to hog the touchline and put crosses into the box. Her two deliveries against Sweden set up goals for Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang.
She also has unparalleled calmness and composure in big moments. That toe-poke against Germany to score the winner at Euro 2022; the winning penalty in the Finalissma and in the round-of-16 shoot-out with Nigeria at the 2023 World Cup; the penalty against Sweden; the instinctive reaction to tap-in the rebound against Italy. There is always a Kelly moment at a tournament.
She now has two, possibly three iconic celebrations. The one of her shirt above her head after the Euro 2022 final and Tuesday night's combination of telling the England fans to 'chill out' and recreating Thierry Henry's corner flag celebration.
'It was just 'Chill out, I was going to score! Chill, it was OK',' Kelly said of her celebration. 'Thierry Henry inspired me with that second one!'
After a turbulent but wonderfully chaotic seven months, Kelly is once again the star of this England team.

Chelsea new boy Jorrel Hato explains why he joined Blues despite secret Liverpool visit

Jorrel Hato has completed his move to Chelsea despite interest elsewhere as the Dutch defender claimed the Blues were the best place for him after previously being seen at Liverpool Jorrel Hato has claimed that "Chelsea is the best place for me" after completing his move to the Blues despite the likes of Liverpool also being keen on the young defender. ‌ Hato had risen through the ranks at Ajax and had a number of clubs in Europe eyeing his services, but he has chosen to make the move to Stamford Bridge, signing a deal in the capital until 2032. ‌ Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah were Chelsea's two central defenders when they claimed the Club World Cup, but they will now face competition from the 19-year-old, who has set the club back £37million. But Hato is convinced he's found the best environment for him. ‌ He told the club's website: "I'm very excited, I'm so happy to be here. I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that so I'm very happy." Talk of a move to Liverpool ramped up after the defender was seen at Anfield during Liverpool's win over Ipswich in January. Hato's list of suitors was understood to include Liverpool, who have considered adding a new central defender this summer. However his weekend visit on Merseyside was due to his relationship with fellow Dutchman Ryan Gravenberch, who invited Hato as a guest to watch the Reds. The pair have been playing together with the Netherlands, with Hato making his senior debut at the age of 17 and picking up six caps. He also captained the Dutch side at the U21 Euros this summer. ‌ Liverpool have sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen this summer with Ibrahima Konate entering the final 12 months of his deal. He is thought to be keen on a switch to Real Madrid, which could leave the Reds light in defence. They have also been heavily linked with Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi. Chelsea's latest arrival takes their summer spend to the £250m mark. Hato is the first major defensive arrival with Enzo Maresca instead choosing to bolster his frontline. Joao Pedro signed from Brighton for £55m and played a key role in the Blues winning the Club World Cup. Liam Delap has also joined from Ipswich, leading to questions over the future of Nicolas Jackson. Jamie Gittens has returned to his homeland after impressing with Borussia Dortmund for £48.5m. RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons is thought to be high on Chelsea's shortlist. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Celtic 1 St Mirren 0: Instant reaction to the burning issues

It took a strike from McCowan at the death for the Scottish champions to wrap up three hard-fought points and open up an immediate two point cushion over their city rivals Rangers at the top of the top flight table. Here are five talking points from a difficult afternoon for Callum McGregor and his team mates. KT class The excitement that Kieran Tierney's return to the East End of Glasgow has generated among the Celtic support was obvious during the build-up to the league opener – he was applauded when he took to the field for his arm-up and when his name was read out by the stadium announcer there was a huge cheer. The left-back, who left his boyhood heroes for Arsenal for a Scottish record £25m fee back in 2019, didn't disappoint. He was by far and away the home side's best player during their first competitive fixture of the 2025/26 campaign. He was composed on the ball, got upfield frequently, skinned first Killian Phillips and then Jayden Richardson with ease and played some quality deliveries into the St Mirren area. If, and it is a big if given his track record with injuries, the defender can stay fit then Celtic have a potent weapon at home and abroad this term and beyond. He appeared to suffer a slight knock on the hour mark and was replaced by Austron Trusty as a precautionary measure. Rodgers will need to careful not to ask too much too soon of a player who did not play a great deal of football last term. Yang posted missing Yang Hyn-jun impressed onlookers with his form both at home and abroad at the tail end of last season and many pundits and fans expected him to step forward and fill the void on the right flank of the Celtic team when Nicolas Kuhn departed for Como for £15m this summer. The South Korean internationalist, though, will need to do far better than he did this afternoon to establish himself as a starter in Rodgers' side. The meeting with St Mirren was a big opportunity for him to show what he had to offer. He failed to take it and was replaced by James Forrest before the hour mark. Forrest, the most decorated player in Scottish football history, made an immediate impact. He went on a mazy run and created an opportunity for his captain Callum McGregor. The midfielder found the bottom corner, but his strike was disallowed by the VAR official after a replay showed he had handled it twice. Saints alive! Summer signings Killian Phillips, Roland Idowu, Richard King, Jayden Richardson and Shamal George all slotted straight into Stephen Robinson's first starting line-up and their fellow new recruits Ryan Mullen, Jalmaro Calvin, Tunmise Sobowale and Miguel Freckleton were on the bench. All change at St Mirren hen. But the visitors were every bit as well-organised, physically imposing, hard-working and difficult to break down as the side which finished sixth in the top flight last term and just missed out on a place in Europe. They had their moments in the final third as well. Declan John picked out Phillips in the opposition box with a long ball upfield in the first half, but the Republic of Ireland internationalist was quickly dispossessed by his countryman Liam Scales, John hooked wide shortly after that and Mark O'Hara forced a save from Kasper Schmeichel with a shot from distance. George, the former Livingston keeper who joined from Wycombe Wanderers on loan for the season, did brilliantly to push a Benjamin Nygren shot onto his crossbar in added on time at the end of the opening 45 minutes. He was not so lucky when McCowan tried his luck from distance at the death. But if Alistair Johnston hadn't blocked an Oisin Smyth that was destined to finish in the back of his net late on the Paisley men would have had a point to show for their efforts. Reinforcements required Manchester City centre-half Jahmal Simpson-Pusey was an interested observer from the main stand today. His loan move from the English giants should be confirmed this week. More new signings, though, are desperately required by Celtic. Up front especially. They were lacking a creative spark, a vital sharpness in attack. That could be due to the fact that it was the first run-out of the new term. But their manager admitted he needed to increase his options on Friday and this game showed why. His charges created plenty of opportunities, but only converted one. Arne Engels, Johnny Kenny and McCowan came on as Rodgers went for broke and the latter finally broke the deadlock with three minutes of regulation time remaining when his deflected effort from the edge of the St Mirren penalty box eluded George's grasp. Lisbon Lions lauded Two of the men who were in the Celtic squad when the Glasgow club became the first from Britain to lift the European Cup in in Lisbon in 1967 passed away this summer – John Clark and John Fallon. Their old club honoured centre-back Clark, who played alongside Billy McNeill in the 2-1 win over Inter Milan, and goalkeeper Fallon, who was the only substitute in the Estadio Nacional in a fitting manner before kick-off. A giant tifo of Clark, who spent over 50 years at Parkhead as a player, a coach, an assistant manager and a kit man, was unfurled in the Lisbon Lions stand as clips of the defender and his old team mate Fallon over the years were played on the giant screens. There was a minute's applause from everyone inside the packed ground ahead of the match and a tifo of Fallow was rolled out in the safe-standing section at the start of the second half. The fans did two of their greatest sons proud.
