US growth likely to slow to 1.6% this year, hobbled by Trump's trade wars, OECD says

U.S. economic growth will slow to 1.6% this year from 2.8% last year as President Donald Trump 's erratic trade wars disrupt global commerce, drive up costs and leave businesses and consumers paralyzed by uncertainty. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development forecast Tuesday that the U.S. economy - the world's largest - will slow further to just 1.5% in 2026. Trump's policies have raised average U.S. tariff rates from around 2.5% when he returned to the White House to 15.4%, highest since 1938, according to the OECD. Tariffs raise costs for consumers and American manufacturers that rely on imported raw materials and components. World economic growth will slow to just 2.9% this year and stay there in 2026, according to the OECD's forecast. It marks a substantial deceleration from growth of 3.3% global growth last year and 3.4% in 2023. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The world economy has proven remarkably resilient in recent years, continuing to expand steadily - though unspectacularly - in the face of global shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But global trade and the economic outlook have been clouded by Trump's sweeping taxes on imports, the unpredictable way he's rolled them out and the threat of retaliation from other countries. Live Events Reversing decades of U.S. policy in favour of freer world trade, Trump has levied 10% taxes - tariffs - on imports from almost every country on earth along with specific duties on steel, aluminium and autos. He's also threatened more import taxes, including a doubling of his tariffs on steel and aluminium to 50%. Without mentioning Trump by name, OECD chief economist Alvaro Pereira wrote in a commentary that accompanied the forecast that "we have seen a significant increase in trade barriers as well as in economic and trade policy uncertainty. This sharp rise in uncertainty has negatively impacted business and consumer confidence and is set to hold back trade and investment.'' Adding to the uncertainty over Trump's trade wars: A federal court in New York last week blocked most of Trump's tariffs, ruling that he'd overstepped his authority in imposing them. Then an appeals court allowed the Trump administration to continue collecting the taxes while appeals worked their way through the U.S. courts. China - the world's second-biggest economy - is forecast to see growth decelerate from 5% last year to 4.7% in 2025 and 4.3% in 2026. Chinese exporters will be hurt by Trump's tariffs, hobbling an economy already weakened by the collapse of the nation's real estate market. Some of the damage will be offset by help from the government: Beijing last month outlined plans to cut interest rates and encourage bank lending as well as allocating more money for factory upgrades and elder care, among other things. The 20 countries that share the euro currency will collectively see economic growth pick up from 0.8% last year to 1% in 2025 and 1.2% next year, the OECD said, helped by interest rate cuts from the European Central Bank. The Paris-based OECD, comprising 38 member countries, works to promote international trade and prosperity and issues periodic reports and analyses.

U.S. stock futures today fall: Dow drops 100 points, S&P 500 and Nasdaq slip as Trump's tariff move hits Ford, GM, and lifts Dollar General

U.S. stock futures today, June 3, are showing signs of weakness as investors grow increasingly cautious about escalating trade tensions and a slowdown in global growth. Early Tuesday, futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped by 100 points or about 0.24%, settling at 42,274. S&P 500 futures dropped 10.25 points to 5,937, down around 0.17%, while the Nasdaq 100 futures inched down by 11.25 points to 21,523.25, a slight drop of 0.05%. This morning's pullback follows Monday's flat session, where all three major indexes ended the day with minor moves as traders kept a close eye on developments from Washington and Beijing. What's fueling the uncertainty? A mix of politics, tariffs, and shifting economic forecasts. Why are U.S. stock futures slipping this morning? The main reason U.S. stock futures today are trending lower is growing investor unease over international trade tensions, especially between the U.S. and China. President Donald Trump is expected to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week. According to Reuters, the White House set a Wednesday deadline for countries to submit trade proposals—part of a fast-track effort to finalize major trade deals within five weeks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo Adding fuel to the fire, Trump announced he's planning to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, pushing the tax rate to 50%. This announcement sent a chill through markets, especially hitting automakers like Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, whose shares dropped Monday amid fears of rising production costs. Investors are now on edge, wondering how global supply chains and corporate profits might be impacted if these trade disputes escalate further. The uncertainty is dragging down market sentiment heading into Tuesday's session. Live Events What does the latest economic outlook mean for the market? Another factor weighing on U.S. stock futures today is the revised global economic outlook released by the OECD. The organization lowered its worldwide growth forecast to 2.9% for 2025, citing pressures from the ongoing trade disputes and slowing economic activity in key regions. For the U.S., growth projections were also cut. The GDP is expected to grow just 1.6% this year, with a further slowdown to 1.5% in 2026. That's a notable drop from 2.8% in 2024, raising concerns that the U.S. economy might be heading into a cooling period after years of steady expansion. According to Investopedia, the market will be watching closely for signs of how this revised outlook might shape future Federal Reserve policy, especially any hints about interest rate cuts or pauses. Which stocks are moving in premarket trading? Despite the broader drop in U.S. stock futures today, a few individual names are standing out. Retailer Dollar General (DG) is one of the big premarket gainers. The stock jumped 11% after the company beat Wall Street expectations for its Q1 earnings and raised its full-year outlook for both sales and profit. That's a rare bright spot in a nervous market. Palantir Technologies (PLTR) is also turning heads. The company's stock reached a new all-time high for the second day in a row. A big reason? Increased adoption of its Foundry AI software by the U.S. government, which is boosting investor confidence. On the flip side, automakers continue to feel the heat from tariff talk. GM, Ford, and Stellantis remain under pressure after Monday's dip, with fears mounting that a prolonged tariff hike could cut into their bottom lines. What's next for U.S. stocks this week? Looking ahead, traders will be keeping a close eye on several upcoming catalysts that could shake the market further. These include: President Trump's meeting with President Xi on trade Wednesday's trade proposal deadline Any updates from the Federal Reserve regarding interest rates Friday's May jobs report, which could offer new insight into the health of the labor market The direction of U.S. stock futures today gives us an early signal of how sensitive investors are to headlines. With high uncertainty and conflicting signals on both policy and economic growth, markets are likely to stay volatile for the days ahead. For now, it's clear: between trade tensions, new tariffs, and slower economic growth, caution is ruling the day on Wall Street.

The possession of the aforesaid plot shall be handed over after the payment of the total lease premium,' the newly listed company said in a regulatory filing on Tuesday. A Schloss Bangalore-led consortium including Arliga Ecospace Business Park and Schloss Chanakya had submitted its bid for the land parcel in February. Live Events The company is aiming to deepen its presence in key domestic markets while selectively extending its footprint overseas with plans to add seven more hotels by 2028, adding over 678 keys, a 19% increase over its current capacity, Ankur Gupta, Managing Partner and Head of Asia Pacific and Middle East, Brookfield Asset Management, had recently told ET. 'We are actively working on seven new hotels to be added by 2028 across heritage, spiritual, wellness, and nature-led destinations. These are in various stages of acquisition and development, and will be a mix of owned and managed assets,' he said. Over the last six years, the brand has grown its portfolio from eight to 13 hotels, increasing its total inventory from 2,495 to 3,553 keys. It comprises five owned hotels, seven managed hotels, and one hotel which is owned and operated by a third-party owner under a franchise arrangement.
