Bruce Willis ‘found ways to soldier on with acting' amid frontotemporal dementia diagnosis
Bruce Willis was working with directors to continue acting before his diagnosis with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) was made public, his wife, Emma Heming Willis, reportedly claims in her forthcoming book.
In March 2022, Willis's family announced that the actor had been diagnosed with aphasia, a language disorder, and would be stepping away from acting as the condition was 'impacting his cognitive abilities'.
Nearly a year later, in February 2023, the family provided a more specific diagnosis: FTD, a degenerative brain condition that impacts communication and behavior. The family described FTD as a 'cruel disease' for which there is no cure.
However, News.com.au reports that Heming Willis's book The Unexpected Journey, which she describes as being 'not a memoir but under the category of self-help', will reveal how the actor continued to work despite his condition.
'Before making his condition public, Willis had found ways to soldier on with his acting, having directors scale down his dialogue and getting a trusted friend to feed him his lines through an earpiece on films such as Assassin and the Detective Knight series,' the Australian news site claims.
The Independent has contacted representatives for Harding Willis, Willis and Lionsgate for comment.
Assassin (2023) and the Detective Knight series (2022-23) were among Bruce's final projects before his retirement from acting.
The news site points out that Willis's deterioration wasn't immediately obvious because of the stutter he'd suffered from since childhood.
'It's how I got my sense of humour, because I realised, yeah I stutter, but I could make people laugh by doing stupid stuff,' he once told interviewer Michael Parkinson.
Willis first married actor Demi Moore in 1987, and shares three daughters with the actor: Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah. The couple divorced in 2000 but remained close friends and continue to spend time together with their blended families. In 2009, Bruce married British-American model and actor Heming Willis, with whom he shares two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn.
Revealing her book's cover on Instagram in April, Heming Willis wrote: 'Born from grief, shaped by love, and guided by purpose, this is the book I needed back when Bruce was first diagnosed and I was frozen with fear and uncertainty.
'This is the book I trust will help the next caregiver. It is filled with support, insight, and the hope needed to navigate this journey.
'This book is for all of us finding our way through the unknown with love, grit, and courage. You are not alone.'
The Unexpected Journey is out September 9.

102-year-old Chicago woman gives viral life advice
A chance meeting at Chicago's airport has transformed 102-year-old Beatrice Stieber into an unlikely social media sensation, spreading her simple philosophy of life to millions around the world. CBS News contributor David Begnaud first encountered Steiber during a layover earlier this year. Their impromptu interview, in which the centenarian shared her secrets to longevity, garnered nearly 9 million views and more than 17,000 comments on social media. "The secret to me is attitude and gratitude," Steiber told Begnaud during their initial meeting. "Attitude and gratitude, attitude and gratitude." The overwhelming response prompted Begnaud to return to Chicago, where Stieber has lived since 1953, for a follow-up visit. Despite her age, Stieber maintains an active lifestyle in her apartment building, where she has resided for more than 40 years. She grocery shops independently and deep cleans her own home. Building manager Ken noted her sharp mind, saying he would never guess she's over 100 years old. "I always get taken for 70," Stieber said. "Not only that, there are a couple of 70-year-olds that look like they're 102." Stieber was married to her late husband, Robert, for 52 years and raised two sons, Jay, 77, and Dean, 68. She continued driving until age 98. Her philosophy on life remains refreshingly simple after more than a century of experiences. "You plot along and you find the humor and you say thank you for the trees, thank you for life," she said. "Life is a miracle." The viral fame has brought unexpected connections. Fans from Long Island, New York, and New Jersey called Stieber, sharing how her message of gratitude has impacted their lives. "She changed my life for the better," said Carmel from New Jersey. "Sometimes I used to be a little bit sad, but after I saw her, I want to live." The visit concluded with a celebration of Stieber's 102-and-a-half birthday at her favorite Chicago restaurant, surrounded by family — a fitting tribute to someone who believes every moment deserves celebration. "Thank you, God, for everything," Stieber said while making her birthday wish. Her unexpected internet fame hasn't gone to her head, though she admits the attention has been overwhelming. "I got a million calls," she said."I live in a world where I couldn't even imagine the response. I couldn't even imagine we met by accident." David Begnaud loves uncovering the heart of every story and will continue to do so, highlighting everyday heroes and proving that there is good news in the news with his exclusive "CBS Mornings" series, "Beg-Knows America." ‘Ballerina' Hopes To Tiptoe Past $30M U.S., $60M WW As ‘Lilo & Stitch' Continues To Bigfoot
Whether or not Lionsgate's John Wick spinoff Ballerina clears or falls under $30M this weekend in U.S./Canada, consider the win in favor of exhibition, which will have that much more money in the marketplace. The Ana de Armas action movie from director Len Wiseman also is bowing in 82 countries in what's expected to be another $30M, for a global take around $60M. That offshore cash would be on par with the start of John Wick: Chapter 3 in 2019. Lionsgate is self-distributing in the UK and Latin America. More from Deadline 'From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina' Review: Ana De Armas Gives Spinoff A Fighting Chance 'Lilo & Stitch': All The Box Office Records Broken Ana De Armas Teases 'Deeper' With Tom Cruise & Reveals The Lessons 'Ballerina' Has Taught Her Largely funded from foreign sales, the $80M-$90M movie, which was delayed by a year for additional shooting (don't say reshoots — it's additional shooting, OK?) is expected to rank second during the first weekend of June. Disney's will threepeat at No. 1 with $35M, -43%. Flying past $300M this week, it still is the second-highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office YTD behind Warner Bros/Legendary's A Minecraft Movie ($423.1M). RELATED: Ballerina stars Armas as Eve Macarro, an orphan who is trained by the Ruska Roma, the Russian assassin school/ballet academy front, whose leader The Director (Anjelica Huston) also schooled John Wick (Keanu Reeves). As Eve becomes a gun for hire, she's ultimately hellbent to avenge the death of her father, the guy slain by The Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne). There's a slew of cameos from the John Wick gang along the way including Winston (Ian McShane) and Charon (the late Lance Reddick), the concierge at the Continental Hotel in New York, as well as Wick himself. Spinoffs rarely put up similar or better numbers than an original franchise's installments; 2023's John Wick: Chapter 4 the best bow in series at $73.8M. Sources advise not to comp Ballerina to any John Wick movies (this despite the fact that Reeves is in the marketing), rather the best comps are solo female action movies, i.e. Alita: Battle Angel ($28.5M in 2019), Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ($26.3M, 2024) and Madame Web ($15.3M, 2024). We hear that Fandango presales for Ballerina are 32% ahead of Madame Web, but pacing 50% behind Furiosa. While we needed product in Q1 and Q2 of this year, Ballerina is opening at this point in time as Lionsgate had access to Reeves for the press tour (he introduced the movie Tuesday night at the Hollywood premiere with John Wick architect Chad Stahelski, who is a producer on the new film). One tracking service shows that first choice is best with men over 25, yet 40% behind Furiosa in the same demo. Lionsgate has a master plan, as unveiled at CinemaCon, to build out the John Wick franchise even more than it already is (an animated prequel, a Donnie Yen-directed movie about blind assassin Caine), with Ballerina being another cog in the wheel. There's already been the Peacock series The Continental. Critics generally love John Wick movies, with the pics ranging from 86% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes to Chapter 4's franchise high of 94% certified fresh. There are fan screenings today starting at 7 p.m. for the R-rated Ballerina, with more previews starting at 6 p.m. Thursday. What else is going on this weekend? With a continued grip on Imax, Paramount's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is eyeing around $15M in weekend 3, -45%. The running cume stands at $129.3M. Sony's second weekend of Karate Kid: Legends is eyeing around $10M, -51%. The movie through Tuesday counts $24.1M. RELATED: Focus Features is expanding Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme from six theaters to 1,600 for a 3-day around $7M. Last weekend, the Cannes-debuting movie posted the best opening theater average of the year with $93,4K. By comparison, Asteroid City did $9M two Junes ago in its wide break second weekend on 1,675 theaters. No Rotten Tomatoes audience score yet. IFC has the Australian shark movie Dangerous Animals, which it world premiered in Directors' Fortnight at Cannes to 88% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with film reviewers. The Sean Byrne-directed final-girl movie starring Jai Courtney and Yellowstone's Hassie Harrison follows a shark tour guide who feeds his passengers to the sharks. Booked at 1,600 theaters, expect a start in low-single-digit range. IFC's Clown in the Cornfield opened to $3.6M and currently counts $7.2M. Neon's acquisition , which won the People's Choice Award at TIFF, is going out in 16 theaters and eight markets. From writer-director Mike Flanagan and based on the short story by Stephen King, the pic follows three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz, played by Tom Hiddleston. Rotten Tomatoes reviews stand at 88% fresh. Lionsgate's ‘John Wick' Spinoff ‘Ballerina' Dancing To $35M+ Opening – Box Office Early Look
Lionsgate's From the World of John Wick: Ballerina hit three-weekend tracking Thursday with a projected $35 million-$40 million three-day debut. The Len Wiseman-directed movie, which underwent additional photography from director and John Wick architect Chad Stahelski, finally hits theaters June 6, a year after its previously scheduled opening. More from Deadline 'Final Destination: Bloodlines' Making Beeline To Record $35M-$40M Franchise Opening – Box Office Preview 'Ballerina' Trailer: Ana De Armas Faces Off Against Keanu Reeves In John Wick Spinoff Mel Gibson Sets 'Resurrection Of The Christ' With Lionsgate; Follow-Up To Blockbuster 'The Passion Of The Christ' Currently, the R-rating action title starring Ana de Armas and including a cameo by John Wick himself Keanu Reeves is solid with men over 25 in first choice, with both good unaided awareness with the overall over-25 crowd. John Wick: Chapter 4 (93% on PostTrak, and 82% definite recommend) drew 48% men over 25 (versus part 3's 45%) and 22% women over 25, as well as 22% men under 25. Diversity demos were massive on the John Wick movie, which pulled in 22% Latino and Hispanic, 21% Asian American and a very good 19% Black moviegoer turnout when it debuted in 2023. The fourthquel hit an all-time opening record for the Thunder Road-produced franchise at $73.8M. Ballerina's opening is north of John Wick: Chapter 2's $30.2M, which is the second-best start for the shoot-'em-up series. At $35M-$40M, this is where spinoffs live, i.e., Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes ($44.6M) and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ($42.1M). As we always say, it's still early in the campaign, and following the kickass footage Lionsgate unveiled at CinemaCon back in April, Oscar nominee de Armas has been working it since then with BTS footage and more on social media. The reason why Ballerina is wedged here in a very competitive June is due to the fact that Reeves had a spot in his schedule to promote the film. Ballerina with reshoots cost between $80M-$90M, we hear. Lionsgate always sells off foreign to fund its movies, retaining U.S. and UK rights. The John Wick franchise counts $1.03 billion at the global box office with John Wick: Chapter 4 the highest-grossing title in the series at $440M-plus and 94% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Also going wide on June 6 is Focus Features' Wes Anderson movie , which has its world premiere Sunday at the Cannes Film Festival. The rollout is similar to Asteroid City two years ago, with a limited launch May 30 followed by a wide break the next weekend. High single digits looks to be the sweet spot for Phoenician Scheme. Asteroid City did a $9M wide opening after a beefy $853,000 limited start at six Los Angeles and New York City theaters (for a massive $142K per screen).
