World shares retreat after Alphabet, AI stocks nudge Wall Street to more records

News1825-07-2025
Manila (Philippines), Jul 25 (AP) World shares retreated on Friday after Wall Street inched to more records as gains for Alphabet and artificial-intelligence stocks helped offset a steep tumble for EV-maker Tesla.
In early European trading, Germany's DAX shed 0.6 per cent to 24,152.20, while Britain's FTSE 100 slid 0.4 per cent to 9,101.41. In Paris, the CAC 40 slipped 0.3 per cent to 7,793.33.
The futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average were both up 0.1 per cent.
In Asian trading, Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.9 per cent to 41,456.23 after two days of gains following President Donald Trump's announcement of a trade deal that would place a 15 per cent tax on imports from Japan. That's lower than the 25 per cent rate that Trump had earlier said would kick in on August 1.
Data released on Friday showed the inflation rate in Japan's capital, Tokyo, rose 2.9 per cent year-on-year in July, down from 3.1 per cent in June. Japanese government efforts to moderate inflation are working, though underlying Tokyo price pressures remain elevated, ING Economics said in a commentary. It expects the Bank of Japan to hold interest rates steady at its July 30-31 meeting, but said the central bank would likely raise its forecast for inflation.
'One big question for markets is whether the tariff ceasefire is extended. We expect that an agreement will be attainable, but, in the interim, markets will watch closely to see if there are adjustments to current tariff rates in either direction," ING Economics said.
In South Korea, the Kospi picked up 0.2 per cent to 3,196.05, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.5 per cent to 8,666.90.
Taiwan's Taiex edged less than 0.1 per cent lower, and in India, the Sensex fell 0.9 per cent.
On Thursday, the S&P 500 added 0.1 per cent to its all-time high set the day before, closing at 6,363.35. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.7 per cent to 44,693.91, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.2 per cent to a record 21,057.96.
Alphabet climbed 1 per cent after the company behind Google and YouTube delivered a fatter profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It's leaning more into artificial-intelligence technology and said it's increasing its budget for AI chips and other investments this year by USD 10 billion to USD 85 billion.
That helped push up other stocks in the AI industry, including a 1.7 per cent rise for Nvidia. The chip company was the strongest single force lifting the S&P 500 because it's the largest on Wall Street in terms of value.
But an 8.2 per cent drop for Tesla kept the market in check. Elon Musk's electric-vehicle company reported results for the spring that were roughly in line with or above analysts' expectations, and Musk is trying to highlight Tesla's moves into AI and robotaxis.
The focus, though, remains on how Musk's foray into politics is turning off potential customers, and he said several rough quarters may be ahead as 'we're in this weird transition period where we'll lose a lot of incentives in the US".
Stocks have broadly been rallying for weeks on hopes that President Donald Trump will reach trade deals with other countries that will lower his stiff proposed tariffs, along with the risk that they could cause a recession and drive up inflation.
In other dealings on Friday, US benchmark crude oil added 21 cents to USD 66.24 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, rose 18 cents to USD 68.54 per barrel.
The US dollar rose to 147.88 Japanese yen from 147.00 yen. The euro fell to USD 1.1736 from USD 1.1750. (AP) SKS GRS GRS

Boult becomes GoBoult, aiming for ₹1K cr sales and international expansion

Smart wearables and hearables manufacturing company Boult is undertaking a brand image change and will adopt the name GoBoult to capture the more premium segment of users, the company's co-founder and chief executive officer, Varun Gupta, said. The rebranding comes at a time when production at most hearable and wearable manufacturing units in India, including Boult's, has been halted or slowed down due to a shortage of rare-earth magnets and other crucial elements that are imported almost exclusively from China. Gupta, however, said that the production stoppage was also necessary since the company wanted to liquidate all the old stock before rolling out the rebranded products. 'Thankfully, it was not so much of a problem for us because, anyway, we were going through a transition. We had to maintain low stock for the last 45 days and the next 30 days as well. We did not want to be producing a huge amount of stock under the old name Boult,' Gupta said. The company may, however, face hiccups even after the rebranding exercise is complete, as the rare-earth magnet supplies from China continue to be constrained, he said. 'The supplies have been constrained. We are looking at alternate suppliers in China; sometimes we are looking at importing, while at other times, it takes a premium to get the same material. As much as we would like to avoid it, we also face issues and capacity constraints,' Gupta said. The company aims to hit the market with the rebranded products starting in September, Gupta added. 'We are looking at a Rs 1000 crore+ number this year. We want to do a few strategic things, such as going international and going for an IPO (initial public offering) as we hit Rs 1000 crore,' he said. The company, which was founded in 2017, will target the Rs 2000 and above average selling price segment for both wearables and hearables, Gupta said. He added that the audio segment contributes to about 75% of the company's total revenues, while smartwatches and other wearables contribute to the other 25%. The digital-first company, which sells nearly 93% of its products through online channels and e-commerce websites, is also planning to expand its retail and offline-store presence, aiming to reach more than 30,000 stores within the next 18 months, he said. GoBoult, the rebranded company, plans to foray into the US, European, Southeast Asian, and East Asian markets within the next five years, Gupta said.

Tesla to open second India showroom in Delhi's Aerocity on Aug 11: Report

US-based Electric vehicle giant Tesla is preparing to open its second showroom in India—this time in the national capital. After launching in Mumbai, the company has chosen Delhi's Aerocity, a high-end commercial area near the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, for its next location. According to a report by CNBC-TV18, the new showroom is scheduled to open on August 11. This move comes shortly after Tesla introduced its Model Y in India. On the same day, Tesla also activated its official India website, which initially allowed users to register interest only from Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. First showroom in Mumbai's BKC Tesla's entry into the Indian market began with the opening of its first showroom in Maker Maxity Mall, located in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Two versions of the Model Y, imported from Tesla's Shanghai plant, are currently being showcased there. The company expects to start deliveries for the rear-wheel drive variant by the end of the third quarter. Customers opting for the long-range version can expect to receive their vehicles in the fourth quarter. Tesla Model Y: Variants & prices Tesla has officially introduced two variants of the Model Y in India: a rear-wheel drive (RWD) version and a long-range RWD variant. The base RWD model is priced at ₹59.89 lakh, while the long-range version comes in at ₹67.89 lakh. Including additional costs, the on-road price of the RWD model is ₹61.07 lakh, whereas the long-range variant reaches ₹69.15 lakh. Buyers of the rear-wheel-drive Model Y can choose between two battery pack sizes — 60 kWh and 75 kWh. This version features a single electric motor, delivering around 295 horsepower. The 60 kWh battery offers an estimated WLTP-certified range of up to 500 km on a full charge. Meanwhile, the long-range version is expected to deliver a higher range of approximately 622 km.

BP makes largest oil & gas discovery in 25 years offshore Brazil, shares surge

British energy major BP said on Monday it has made its largest oil and gas discovery in 25 years offshore Brazil. The discovery is a big boost for the company following its strategic shift away from renewable energy to refocus on fossil fuels. After the announcement, BP shares gained 1.3% by 1107 GMT, outperforming a broader index of European energy companies which was up 0.1%. BP said it planned to create a major new output hub at the Bumerangue discovery in Brazil, which was probably the company's biggest since Shah Deniz in 1999, a gas and condensate field in the Azeri part of the Caspian Sea. According to the company, Shah Deniz - with around 1 trillion cubic metres of gas and 2 billion barrels of condensate initially in place, produced 28 billion standard cubic metres of gas last year. "Brazil is an important country for BP, and our ambition is to explore the potential of establishing a material and advantaged production hub in the country," said Gordon Birrell, BP's production and operations chief, according to Reuters. BP had secured the Bumerangue block in the Santos basin amid pre-salt rocks in deep water offshore Brazil in December 2022 with what it said were "very good commercial terms". The company further said this was its tenth discovery this year, following findings in Trinidad, Egypt, Brazil and others. It had forecast its oil and gas production at 2.3 million to 2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2030. In 2024, the production was 2.4 million barrels of oil equivalent. It expects production to be lower in 2025. Early results indicate elevated levels of carbon dioxide in the Brazilian block, BP said, adding that further analysis would give more insight into its potential amid a bigger drilling programme in Brazil. The company is set to report its second quarter results on Tuesday.
