Thadou tribe leaders, Meitei groups meet to pursue peace in Manipur
A closed-door meeting between representatives of the Thadou tribe and leaders of Meitei civil society organisations in Imphal on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) is seen as a significant step to restore peace in conflict-scarred Manipur.
This was the first time that members of the Thadou community stepped into the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley after the conflict began on May 3, 2023, killing at least 250 people and displacing more than 60,000 people.
More than a dozen leaders of Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM), the apex body of the Thadou tribe, attended the meeting with their counterparts in the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, All Manipur United Clubs Organisation, Federation of Civil Society Organisations, and Arambai Tenggol.
The Thadous, considered a part of the greater Kuki group, were affected by the conflict between the Kuki-Zo and the Meitei communities. The Thadous, however, have been asserting their identity independent of the Kuki tag.
In a statement, the TIM said the meeting was on a 'community understanding programme' between the two sides. It claimed Kuki is a political ideology, not an ethnic identity.
'A major source of confusion between the Thadou tribe and those identifying as Kuki tribes arises from the similarities in attire and cultural expressions. However, it is crucial to understand that the Thadou tribe is a distinct indigenous identity, while the Kuki nomenclature, as used today, has become a politicised and ideological label,' the TIM stated.
It claimed that 'Kuki' has never been a historically indigenous community to Manipur.
'Foreign origins'
'The term Kuki has foreign origins, and those who adopt it today often do so to push a separatist and extremist ideology. Many who currently identify as Kuki are suspected illegal immigrants, having settled in Manipur in recent decades,' the TIM said.
It further stated that over time, church politics and religious affiliations played a significant role in misclassifying many members of the Thadou tribe as Kuki, creating further confusion and undermining the true identity of the Thadou people.
The organisation said this became a threat not only to the Thadou tribe, but also to the Meiteis, Meitei-Pangals (Muslims), other tribal communities and Manipur's unity as a whole.

Thadou Tribe, Meiteis, Other Communities Share Stage In Imphal For Peace
Imphal: Delegations of the Thadou tribe and civil society organisations including from the Meitei community met in Manipur's capital Imphal on Wednesday in a significant step at demonstrating the resilience of the common people in overcoming hate and misunderstanding, the attendees told reporters. After landing at Imphal airport, members of the Thadou tribe delegation drove to the venue in the heart of Imphal city, where people from the Meitei community and others welcomed them. The stillness of the venue disappeared as the greetings and handshakes began. The bold step taken by the delegation of the Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM), a key body of the indigenous distinct Thadou tribe, received goodwill and support from many communities, a leader of the delegation said. Many in the security establishment also viewed the meeting positively, sources said. Members of the Meitei organisations said the Imphal meeting marked the first time in over two years when multi-ethnic delegations shared a stage in the capital city and agreed on the need to remove misunderstandings and work toward equity for all communities of the border state. "We hope today's meeting will encourage all indigenous distinct tribes and communities to take a similar stand and safeguard Manipur's democratic and multi-ethnic identity," a member of the Meitei delegation said. All are hopeful some kind of concrete steps will be taken for the benefit of all indigenous communities as the delegates begin meeting more often. Members of the Thadou tribe delegation said there are many smaller distinct tribes in the state that believe in peaceful co-existence, but they have been unable to break free from the firm hold of a few armed troublemakers who want only political power and amassing wealth. "A major source of confusion between the Thadou tribe and those identifying as Kuki tribes arises from the similarities in attire and cultural expressions. However, it is crucial to understand that Thadou tribe is a distinct indigenous identity, while the Kuki nomenclature, as used today, has become a politicised and ideological label. The nomenclature Kuki is not a genuine ethnic identity," the Thadou Inpi Manipur said in a statement after the meeting. "We must not mistake external appearances for identity. Wearing similar attire does not equate to being the same people. The appropriation of Thadou culture by Kuki-identifying groups is misleading and harmful," the Thadou Inpi Manipur said. "... So, this issue must be addressed thoughtfully, lawfully, and patiently for the greater good of Manipur," it said. Media Advisory | Aug 6, 2025 For today's Road to Peace event, media are kindly requested not to use "Kuki" when referring to delegates. Use: Thadou tribe or Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) only. Accurate identity matters. Report responsibly. — THADOU INPI MANIPUR (@ThadouInpi_MN) August 6, 2025 The Thadou Inpi Manipur leaders said the Thadou tribe has been resisting attempts by "Kuki supremacists" to assume the Thadou entity for decades. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) hosted the meeting.

Thadou Inpi delegation holds peace talks with Meitei groups in Imphal
1 2 Imphal: For the first time since the outbreak of ethnic unrest in the state in 2023, a 16-member delegation from Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM), representing the Thadou community, held talks with various Meitei civil society organisations (CSOs) and student bodies, marking a crucial move towards fostering dialogue and mutual understanding among communities. Reliable sources said the ongoing meeting in Imphal includes the participation of several prominent CSOs such as the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (Cocomi), All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Federation of Civil Society Organisation (FOCS), Arambai Tenggol and women's groups. Student organisations, including Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA), Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK), and Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS), among others, are also taking part in the talks. "This is a significant step towards reconciliation and peacebuilding in Manipur," a participant who does not want to be identified told TOI over phone, without further elaborating about the agenda of the meeting. Though the detailed outcome and specifics of what transpired in the meeting are not immediately known, it is believed that the primary agenda focussed on promoting communal harmony and exploring pathways to restore lasting peace in the conflict-hit state. Manipur has been hard hit by communal conflict since May 3, 2023, and nearly 300 lives had been lost and thousands of families rendered homeless due to the ethnic clashes between the Kuki-Zo community and Meiteis.
