Northern Ireland star and former Larne and Portadown hero secures switch to ambitious EFL outfit

The ambitious EFL League Two club have recruited the former Larne and Portadown frontman from Dutch second-tier side ADO Den Haag.
Bonis (25) impressed after making the switch to the Netherlands from Larne in the summer of 2024, bagging 11 League goals to help fire Den Haag into the Promotion Play-Offs.
He missed out on the chance to play in the Eredivisie in the 2025/26 season after the Storks lost out over two legs to eventual Play-Off winners Telstar, but it was still a highly successful campaign for the former Seagoe man as he also made his senior Northern Ireland debut in a goalless draw against Belarus back in October.
Bonis remained in Michael O'Neill's fold and played in both legs of a friendly double-header against Switzerland and Sweden in March as well as the home victory over Iceland in June.
Now he will aim to help the Spireites – who reached the League Two Play-Offs in 2024/25, their first season back in the EFL after gaining promotion from the National League – push on and make a fresh bid to reach the third-tier.
Bonis is no stranger to silverware having previously won back-to-back Irish League crowns with Larne in 2023 and 2024 prior to his Den Haag switch as well as the Championship title in 2020 with Portadown, from whom he was a reported £100,000 purchase for the Invermen back in January 2022.
'We are delighted to announce the arrival of Northern Ireland international Lee Bonis from Dutch side ADO Den Haag for an undisclosed fee,' confirmed Chesterfield on social media.
ADO Den Haag posted on their channels: 'Lee Bonis will no longer play for ADO Den Haag next season.
'The club has reached an agreement with Chesterfield on the transfer of the 25-year-old Northern Ireland striker.'

Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister reveals how Arne Slot stepped up during personal difficulties

Arne Slot led Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season at the help but Alexis Mac Allister has also spoken about the part played by the Dutch manager off the pitch Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister was brought to Anfield in Jurgen Klopp's final season before winning the Premier League in the first campaign under Arne Slot. The Argentina international has spoken about the difference between the two bosses, while also opening up on how Slot helped him through a particularly difficult spell away from the pitch. ‌ Mac Allister was a regular for the Reds last term, starting 30 of their 38 Premier League matches. It was a dream first season for new boss Slot, and the Argentina international has spoken about the other ways the former Feyenoord manager helped in ways some might not have seen. ‌ "I don't want to go into details, but I was going through some very personal difficulties last season," Mac Allister told The Players' Tribune. "I told one person what I was going through, and it ended up reaching Arne. ‌ "He called me into his office one day. You never know how something like that is going to go in football. But Arne was amazing about everything. He let me get everything off my chest, and after that, I felt like I could breathe a bit easier. "And my teammates, they were incredible. They kept me smiling through difficult times. Especially our little South American crew: Lucho [Diaz]. Alisson. Darwin [Nunez]. Even Mr. Taffarel (former goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel). What a legend! He's almost 60, and there's no one funnier than him." Mac Allister played under Roberto De Zerbi in his final season at previous club Brighton, and also spoke about the similarities between the Italian and Slot. "What can I say? I like to speak to my managers on the training ground and understand what they want from me. It was the same with De Zerbi and now it's the same with Arne. I have four or five dads, I guess!" he said. "When Arne came in, it was a huge change for us, because his style is a bit different. It's less rock and roll and more possession, but it worked out so well for us. But his support off the pitch was even more important for me." Liverpool begin their 2025-26 campaign against Bournemouth on Friday. They did the double over Andoni Iraola's side last term, with Mac Allister involved in both games, and have signed Milos Kerkez from the Cherries this summer. ‌ Three of the so-called South American crew have departed this summer. Diaz has joined Bayern Munich, Nunez has left Anfield for Al Hilal, and coach Taffarel has made way for the returning Xavi Valero. There have also been plenty of new additions, though, with Giovanni Leoni the latest to arrive. The Italian centre-back's move from Parma was confirmed on Friday, just hours before the league opener.

Bert Esselink wants another taste of Europe with Dundee United

Bert Esselink is keen to get back on the European scene as quickly as possible following Dundee United's Conference League qualifying exit to Rapid Vienna. The Taysiders brought a 2-2 draw back from the first leg of the third qualifying round in Austria to Tannadice on Thursday night and in front of a packed house Jim Goodwin's men looked to be heading for the play-off when striker Max Watters headed in the opener after 25 minutes and grabbed his second with a penalty three minutes before the break. However, Rapid striker Janis Antiste reduced the deficit in the 63rd minute with United defender Iurie Iovu involved in the ball hitting the net and half-time substitute Ercan Kara levelled from close range in the 77th minute to take the game into extra-time and then penalties after it finished 4-4 on aggregate. Esselink scored his penalty but United substitute Amar Fatah hit the post, the only miss as the visitors triumphed 5-4. The 25-year-old Dutch centre-back, who signed a two-year deal from Polish side Stal Mielec in June, enjoyed the experience, as well as the previous rounds games against UNA Strassen from Luxembourg, and is looking for more. 'We have to strive for it again,' he said. 'I think as a team we are capable of good things. We had a good game on Thursday, we showed that we can be part of these competitions and that we can compete with these kind of teams. 'So that's something we can be proud of and we have to strive for again, until the end of the season. 'It's something you dream of when you're young and of course, the Champions League is the highest level and then Europa League is there and Conference League is a level that's also competing in Europe and that's something everyone is adoring and everyone dreams of as a kid. 'So it's very nice to be part of it, and it's something that feels very good. 'You saw the atmosphere here and also in the away games. 'It's amazing to be a part of, but of course it's sad that we didn't go through and that we cannot continue our dream in the group stages because that was our target. 'That's the sad part, but that's football sometimes and life continues, and we have to fight to achieve it again for next season.' Goodwin will assess his squad ahead of the Premier Sports Cup game against fellow William Hill Premiership side Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday and Esselink is looking to go deep in that competition. He said: 'It was a tough game, of course, playing 120 minutes on Thursday, but we have to sleep well, get a good recovery and then turn our head towards the next one on Sunday. 'It's the League Cup. It's a competition where also we want to compete until the end and get as far as possible. 'So we have to get over it fast, focus on the next game and get through to the next round.' Zac Sapsford will be assessed after picking up a knock winning the penalty against Rapid Vienna which meant he did not come out for the second half. Goodwin this week added further to his squad after signing Liverpool midfielder Luca Stephenson on another season-long loan, while Julius Eskesen joined from Eliteserien side FK Haugesund on a two-year contract, with the option of an additional 12 months. Ryan Strain, Kristijan Trapanovski and Ross Graham are all still missing with hamstring injuries and Dario Naamo also missed out against Rapid, while Isaac Pappoe is another long-term injury.
