Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister reveals how Arne Slot stepped up during personal difficulties
Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister was brought to Anfield in Jurgen Klopp's final season before winning the Premier League in the first campaign under Arne Slot. The Argentina international has spoken about the difference between the two bosses, while also opening up on how Slot helped him through a particularly difficult spell away from the pitch.
Mac Allister was a regular for the Reds last term, starting 30 of their 38 Premier League matches. It was a dream first season for new boss Slot, and the Argentina international has spoken about the other ways the former Feyenoord manager helped in ways some might not have seen.
"I don't want to go into details, but I was going through some very personal difficulties last season," Mac Allister told The Players' Tribune. "I told one person what I was going through, and it ended up reaching Arne.
"He called me into his office one day. You never know how something like that is going to go in football. But Arne was amazing about everything. He let me get everything off my chest, and after that, I felt like I could breathe a bit easier.
"And my teammates, they were incredible. They kept me smiling through difficult times. Especially our little South American crew: Lucho [Diaz]. Alisson. Darwin [Nunez]. Even Mr. Taffarel (former goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel). What a legend! He's almost 60, and there's no one funnier than him."
Mac Allister played under Roberto De Zerbi in his final season at previous club Brighton, and also spoke about the similarities between the Italian and Slot. "What can I say? I like to speak to my managers on the training ground and understand what they want from me. It was the same with De Zerbi and now it's the same with Arne. I have four or five dads, I guess!" he said.
"When Arne came in, it was a huge change for us, because his style is a bit different. It's less rock and roll and more possession, but it worked out so well for us. But his support off the pitch was even more important for me."
Liverpool begin their 2025-26 campaign against Bournemouth on Friday. They did the double over Andoni Iraola's side last term, with Mac Allister involved in both games, and have signed Milos Kerkez from the Cherries this summer.
Three of the so-called South American crew have departed this summer. Diaz has joined Bayern Munich, Nunez has left Anfield for Al Hilal, and coach Taffarel has made way for the returning Xavi Valero.
There have also been plenty of new additions, though, with Giovanni Leoni the latest to arrive. The Italian centre-back's move from Parma was confirmed on Friday, just hours before the league opener.

Why Arsenal pulled out of Eberechi Eze transfer race
Tottenham will get a free run at signing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace after Arsenal dropped their interest. Spurs are now increasingly confident of securing the signing of the England international for a fee in excess of £60 million. Personal terms are already said to have been agreed and the player himself is keen on a move to last season's Europa League winners. Palace, for their part, begin their season against Chelsea on Sunday but are expected to omit Eze from their squad. Indeed, the Eagles are already making plans to replace the 27-year-old and have made contact with Leicester to register their interest in ilal El Khannouss. Earlier this summer it appeared that Arsenal represented Eze's No.1 choice and, according to Fabrizio Romano, the attacking midfielder was open to the idea of rejoining the club that discarded him as a teenager. Arsenal are, however, said to be content with their attacking options as things stand, particularly given Ethan Nwaneri's decision to sign a new contract. The teenager enjoyed a stellar breakthrough campaign last season and has now committed his future to his boyhood club amid speculation he was considering a move to Chelsea. With the equally exciting Max Dowman also waiting in the wings, Arsenal do not want to block the progress of two of the most exciting talents to emerge from the Hale End Academy. More Trending A sensational scissor kick by Richarlison, meanwhile, ensured Thomas Frank enjoyed a dream start to life with Tottenham in the Premier League as they recorded a 3-0 victory over Burnley. Frank's managerial debut for Spurs on Wednesday almost ended with silverware, but Paris St Germain fought back from two down late on to clinch Super Cup success on penalties. With a lack of creative options due to injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, former Brentford head coach Frank had warned newly-promoted Burnley would pose a stern test and yet a double by Richarlison secured a first league win since April 6. Richarlison's second goal in the 60th minute was a superb volley from a Mohammed Kudus cross and Brennan Johnson added another six minutes later on a tough top-flight return for Burnley boss Scott Parker at his old club. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe calls for resolution to Alexander Isak's future
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has called for a definitive resolution regarding the future of striker Alexander Isak. Isak was not included in the squad for Newcastle's Premier League season opener, a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa. The Sweden international is reportedly seeking a move away from St James' Park, with Liverpool having previously had a bid rejected. Howe reiterated that the option for Isak to return to the squad remains open, but the decision ultimately rests with the player. Aston Villa played with 10 men for over half an hour after Ezri Konsa's red card but successfully held Newcastle to a goalless draw.
