Bayer Leverkusen director offers update on Liverpool's Florian Wirtz transfer pursuit

Bayer Leverkusen managing director Simon Rolfes has confirmed that Liverpool has "concrete interest" in signing Germany playmaker Florian Wirtz from the Bundesliga side this summer. Speaking at the unveiling of former Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag, who will replace the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso, Rolfes admitted that the Reds want to take Leverkusen's star player. Wirtz is valued at as much as $169 million (£126 million). Last week, Manchester City dropped out of the race for the 22-year-old, who notched 31 goal contributions in all competitions this season. Since then, Bayern Munich has conceded that it is Liverpool leading the race for his signature. The Reds could also trigger the $39 million (£30 million) release clause written into wing-back Jeremie Frimpong's contract. "[Wirtz is] one of our players," Rolfes said, via The Athletic's Seb Stafford-Bloor. "Naturally, there's a lot of interest. There's concrete interest from Liverpool." "We just want good players and ideally you sign them as soon as you can," Arne Slot said during the final press conference of the season on Sunday when he was asked about his hopes of bringing in players quickly. "It's not always easy to sign good players, let alone to sign them early in the window. But this club doesn't start working from today onwards. "There is so much hard work being done behind the scenes already this season to find out which targets we have and try to sign them. I have all the confidence that if we've addressed the right player that we try to sign that player. "But let's see when that's going to happen and if that's going to happen. I'm very happy with the squad we already have." Liverpool chairman Tom Werner, meanwhile, was asked about transfers after he and other key FSG figures watched Virgil van Dijk lift the Premier League trophy. "We go again," Werner told the ECHO. "It never gets old, winning. We owe it to all of our supporters to bring back a team even better next season. It's already [a] busy [summer]. "We obviously had high hopes for this season but Arne has been an extraordinary coach. I think there have been three coaches who have won the Premier League in their first season and Arne is one of them. He is just an extraordinary leader. "Great compliment to Arne, he's authentic, he's not trying to be anyone else. The team was an extraordinarily good team but he brought the best out of them."

We were perhaps a little too much in our comfort zone towards the end: Mohamed Salah compares Jurgen Klopp's tenure to Arne Slot's time

Liverpool star winger Mohamed Salah, who recently helped the club win their record-equalling 20th Premier League title, compared former manager Jurgen Klopp and current gaffer Arne Slot, saying that at the end of the German's tenure, the players were a little too comfortable but Slot's direct approach jolted them back to life. 'Arne is very direct, he re-established the competitive level, whereas with Jürgen, we were perhaps a little too much in our comfort zone towards the end. Arne and his staff are more open to discussion, to sharing feelings, I think that was important in my performances. And, above all, it led us to success,' Salah said in an interview with France Football, as per ESPN. The Egyptian, who was Liverpool's player of the season, scoring 28 times in the EPL, said that Slot's approach had initially taken him by surprise. 'I didn't expect us to win so quickly. Who could have predicted that the transition would be successful so quickly? No one, I think. In preseason, Arne came to see me and asked me to be an example for the other players,' he said. 'I told him not to worry because I'm always at my best, not to set an example, but because that's who I am. He told me what he expected of me in the game, with a lot of responsibilities in running, which I liked,' the Egyptian added. Meanwhile, Salah was voted 'Footballer of the Year' in England by soccer writers for a record-tying third time on Friday, while Arsenal striker Alessia Russo won the women's award. Salah previously won the award, handed out by the Football Writers' Association, in 2018 and 2022. Arsenal great Thierry Henry is the only other player to have captured it three times. Salah has the most goals (28) and assists (18) in the Premier League this season and played a key role in Liverpool winning the title for the second time in five years.

‘I didn't expect us to win so quickly' – Mohamed Salah on the impact of Arne Slot at Liverpool

In an interview with France Football, Mohamed Salah (32) was asked about the impact of Jürgen Klopp leaving Liverpool as head coach and how well Arne Slot has done since replacing the German in the hot seat at Anfield. Klopp announced he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season. Ordinarily, when such a historic and successful figure leaves a football club, their successor struggles to cope with the expectation and demands that are set in following them. However, this is not the case for Arne Slot. The Dutch manager has done brilliantly since he arrived from Feyenoord and has won the Premier League title in his first season with the Premier League club. Advertisement Salah has also seen the impact of Slot since he arrived at Anfield. The Egypt international is enjoying his best season for Liverpool statistically, with 46 goal contributions in 35 matches – setting a new record for goal contributions in a 38-game season. Highlighting the impact of Liverpool's new head coach, Salah said, 'I didn't expect us to win so quickly. Who could have predicted that the transition would be successful so quickly? No one, I think. In preseason, Arne came to see me and asked me to be an example for the other players. I told him not to worry because I'm always at my best, not to set an example, but because that's who I am. He told me what he expected of me in the game, with a lot of responsibilities in running, which I liked.' The Egyptian international also compared the differences between the former Feyenoord coach and Klopp, 'Arne is very direct, he re-established the competition, whereas with Jürgen, we were perhaps a little too much in our comfort zone towards the end. Arne and his staff are more open to discussion, to sharing feelings, I think that was important in my performances. And, above all, it led us to success.' GFFN | Liam Wraith

Liverpool boss Arne Slot's net worth, real name and stunning wife

Arne Slot has guided Liverpool to their 20th English top-flight title today after a commanding 5-1 victory over former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou's Spurs. The Dutchman took over from legendary figure Jurgen Klopp last summer. Given this transition and only making one major signing in the form of Federico Chiesa, few fans and pundits predicted they would win the title this season. Nevertheless, Slot quickly won over Liverpool fans with their impressive league form - winning the league today in fine fashion with goals from Salah, Diaz, Mac Allister, Gakpo and an Udogie own goal, reports the Liverpool Echo and the Mirror . The title win is the first time a Liverpool manager has won the league in his first season since Kenny Dalglish's first spell in charge in 1985/86. As a result of this, the Record is taking you inside Slot's world. Slot's rapid rise in management has brought significant financial rewards. At Feyenoord, he was among the highest-paid coaches in Dutch football history, earning a record salary. When Liverpool came calling, they had to fork out a reported £8 million to release him from his contract. At Anfield , Slot now earns an estimated £6-8 million per year, making him one of the highest-paid managers in the Premier League. His exact net worth remains undisclosed, but there's no doubt his earnings have skyrocketed since his move to England and will continue to grow if he sustains the performance levels his Liverpool side have shown so far. Slot was born on 17 September 1978 in Bergentheim, a village in the municipality of Hardenberg, the Netherlands. He was actually born Arend Martijn Slot, meaning Arne is a nickname. Arend is the Dutch word for eagle, and, while not a common name in the Netherlands, it was passed down to him by his father . Many Liverpool fans were completely unaware of this until earlier this week thanks to a post on X by Paul Senior, a Liverpool fan who also owns many bars, pubs and restaurants in the city through DGB Hospitality. On Wednesday April 23, Paul said: 'Mad when you find out the manager's name isn't actually Arne.' Many fans were stunned by discovering this fact. One replied: 'Just googled this. Not sure I'll ever recover.' Another said: 'No way I just found this out.' A third added: 'I need to sit down.' A fourth said: 'Disguised his real name as he managed @ LFC winning the league. Slick Slot. Love it.' Despite his growing fame, Slot prefers to keep his personal life away from the limelight. He is married to his wife, Miriam , and the couple has children, though details about them remain private. Slot's transition to Liverpool came with sacrifices. His wife and children remained in the Netherlands while he moved to England, prioritizing their education and stability. In an interview with Sky Sports, Slot admitted that spending Christmas away from his family was tough, but he understood the necessity of the decision and hoped they would join him soon. He said: 'There are obvious reasons why we (my wife and I) kept the children and my wife in Holland as they are in the last year of their school. "They have to do their exams so for us it was not the ideal moment to bring them towards England. But in the ideal world, you are the manager of Liverpool and still have your family around you.' The Dutchman has implemented a no-nonsense approach at Liverpool, emphasising discipline, squad chemistry, and player well-being. One of his most notable rules is making breakfast a compulsory team activity at the training ground. Slot believes shared meals foster unity and enhance team spirit. Additionally, Every morning at 9:45 AM, players must complete a wellness check, tracking sleep quality and overall fitness via a digital app. He has also introduced innovative training methods, including yoga, hydrotherapy, and warm-up drills like chasing tennis balls on cones. Beyond physical preparation, Slot demands tactical discipline. Training sessions are intense, and competition for starting spots is fierce. Liverpool players have described his approach as meticulous, ensuring no detail is overlooked in their pursuit of silverware
